You don’t WANT it to get called. You are just trying to potentially blend in to stop a play. If they don’t call it, they run a play, you have numbers and stop the play and time runs off.
If they do call it, great, the time ran off the clock and it’s just 5 yards. If you do too many players, they will 100% call it and you can’t potentially get away with it

Well boys, a lot to clean up today. I guess I'll go chronological, which means I have to start with Kirby. Your description of what Kirby did is so laughably benign I am wondering if you guys are somehow related to him or something. No, he didn't set out to do it when he started marching. No, he should not be suspended. No, it was not Woody Hayes. But yes, he absolutely shoved a person. If he didn't see there was a human being in his path, then he has shockingly poor eyesight. He saw there was a person and did not change direction. Instead he initiated contact and extended his arms (way more than Jeremiah Smith did) and forcefully knocked the other human being out of his way without regard for what would happen to him. I will be INCREDIBLY generous and say he wasn't fully aware it was a Mississippi State player. So what does that mean, he thought it was one of his own players? He thought it was a grad assistant wearing a helmet? Give me a break Ari acting like this was nothing. If it had been Harbaugh this would have led every podcast and every show on ESPN. Not saying you would personally feel differently, but the lack of attention this has gotten is insane. And in case you weren't aware, when you attacked people on the Internet for feeling this was a Big Deal, that included your boy Doug at KOTN.
Now, for the S-show you boys put on talking about Dan Lanning. You clearly prepared for that talk about as well as Ryan Day prepares for end-of-game situations. It's not clear to me you even understand what happened when you say things like it was a risk because maybe OSU would make a play downfield. How is that a risk? If OSU makes a play they make a play. Oregon declines the penalty and it's no different than having had 11 on the field. Beyond that, you say he *wanted* it to be called? No he didn't! He didn't *care* if it was called. I mean, you even mentioned the H.S. coach who played 12 men as long as he could before someone noticed. Did he go around after each play begging the refs to throw a flag on his team? Of course not! If you can play with 12 men AND GET AWAY WITH IT that's _better_ than giving up the 5 yards. I'm positive you understand this, so yes, I can just chalk that up to you guys talking faster than you were thinking, but that is sort of my point about how you totally Ryan Day'd this discussion. Also you seemed unsure of how one could possibly combat this from a rules perspective. Well gee, just do the obvious thing that the NFL did. You said they didn't change the rule, but they did a long time ago: It's a pre-snap penalty. That's it. Notice it post-snap? Doesn't matter. It's a pre-snap penalty. It becomes a complete non-factor. And why put only 12 on? Ari half hit on it. He said maybe Howard would notice and spike it. But even worse for Lanning is the refs notice (or OSU notices and doesn't snap the ball) and then it's called before the snap and it's a 5 yard penalty and no time comes off. Yes, that's right. It's only a post-snap infraction if the refs notice it post-snap, but they can blow the whistle before the snap. How dumb is this rule? Quite dumb!
Now with all that said, the alleged genius of Lanning is quite dubious. First of all, I don't necessarily believe it was intentional.I think he's just taking credit for it days later. But think about what he's taking credit for...(and what you're saying makes him a genius). The 5 yard penalty put OSU on the 38. (And again, time only came off the clock because the refs called it post-snap.) Fielding's long is 47 and he's 0-1 lifetime from 50+. He's not good from long range, I get it. But he has the leg. He can actually physically kick it that distance. And I know Ari correctly said that it's all results-based but I just have to play the what-if game a little bit and say that after Lanning gifted OSU 5 yards, Howard had every opportunity to get a couple more yards and get down and call a TO. I mean, I guess you could say Lanning was more confident that he would get a stop with 12 men and then be able to force a long kick (by the way, that play went to single coverage) but with 10 seconds he's realistically only defending one play (that stands) before a FGA anyway and he chose the version where he gave them 5 free yards. If Howard's last play started at the 43 with 10 seconds and he ran 8 yards for 6 seconds, giving Day a couple seconds to actually call the TO, they are then kicking from the 35 which is about where Howard should have slid IRL to get the TO called with a second left. In other words, this "genius" move accomplished nothing and was probably riskier than it was advantageous. It really only "worked" in the sense that OSU didn't know how to take advantage of the gift they were given and if you want to say Lanning is such a genius he knew that OSU couldn't cope, then fine, I guess.

Any fan base in the country outside of Georgia would take Dan Lanning as their head coach in a heartbeat.

Lanning didn’t put 15 players on the field because the ref could throw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct and that 15 yards puts osu into FG range negating the move. 12 makes it appear like a mistake and only 5 yards with the time lost as well.

It's always hilarious to see how much trash that Kentucky fans think they're entitled to talk against a team that they've beaten a grand total of 4 times in the last 40 years. Good work, Nick.

Think it’s an easy change, under 2 minutes give the offense the chance to either take the play or take the yardage and put the clock back to where it was. Go ducks!

THey could have declined the penalty I think, but they took the penalty because Howard missed the throw to his receiver.

@SS-vi9sj which is what he meant by take the play. I agree that's all. If an offense does it you could give the defense the same options. Take the play or take the yards with the time or take the yards without the time. In this scenario, Oregon would have taken the penalty with the time.

I think it'd be too obvious if they put 14 men on the field and they might have spiked it immediately and not lose any time but gain the 5 yard penalty.

Hey Ari, have you ever done a manly thing in your life. Atypically a day in the life of a herd of cattle can be calming. They will usually behave much more casually than a crowd of people.
