    Clueless. Just discovered it has an oiler. Zero safety gear, and continues to cut with a dull chain. Obviously a millennial.

    Everyone is talking down about the 391 - I have one and it works great! Cuts fast, runs great every time. Starts right up (once I got to know it)
    I’d like to get a set of dogs for it, but it works great for what I do. I probably use it twice a week or more.

    Even with the adjustable oiler, my 391 won't oil a 25 very well. I've drilled out the oil ports on the bar, and it helped a bit. Now I run the 25 on my 661, and I'm going to sell the 391 with a 20 inch bar and 4 chains.

      I've heard that some 391s have a smaller oiler. Not sure of the validity, but it sounds like it may be true given your experience

    I have aftermarket dogs on mine, but just on the inside (Pfilz). Was there any modifications needed to get the outside dogs on? Or is that a different 'brand' (assuming West Coast Saws). Also, what's the sledge/maul?

    • @HabeasJ
      @HabeasJ  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to change out the side cover to one that has the proper mounting holes. West coast saws makes one but the one in this video was part of the full wrap handlebar kit (1140-007-1012) which also came with a pair of stihl branded "large" dogs. There's a timestamp in the description where I talk about the kit in depth, but long story short you just need a different clutch cover and the mounting hardware. Don't forget to add a chain catch if you put on an outside dog though. You may run into problems without it

    Did you get the full wrap handle from local Stihl dealer? I can't seem to come across one

    • @HabeasJ
      @HabeasJ  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did get it through my dealer, but they had to order it. I think almost all shops would have to order it unless they have an incredible inventory

    I take 2 or 3 chains so just swap out and grind or file after dark.

    meh, run a 6 foot bar on my 391 eats wood and much lighter than the next step up, can you stop filing 20 times one one tooth and five on the other. full skip though, but that means something else to you, rock on, mean saw.

      It doesn’t matter how many strokes you put on a tooth,you want to file it until it has a straight edge on top and sharp.Many times I might have two or three teeth in a row that hit a rock 🪨 or dirt that will be rounded off and they may take 20-30 more strokes to make them right.

    I bought a new MS391 2 1/2 yrs ago. The dealer couldn't get it to start, but I trusted they flooded it. Very temperamental saws I was told. Took it home thinking that I made a great purchase! I never got it to run more than 5 minutes at a time. Pulled my guts out pulling on that damn rope! Finally took it to the dealer to fix and they gave it back to me with the suggestion to junk it. Seems it was over the warranty by a couple of months. Would cost more to put a new motor on it than it was worth. They charged me $250.00 to tell me that. I was upset that they wouldn't stand behind the saw! Took it home, tore it apart, found that the top ring was stuck and both skirts were lying under the crank. Bought a new piston kit for $45.00, put it together in an hour and started it up on the second pull. I will never buy another product from Stil nor their 2 cycle oil which is garbage! What a POS company and what a POS saw! I've had a Poulan for over 30 years and it still runs like a champ! Stihl should take notes on how to make a quality product! They have fallen a long ways in my eyes and for many loggers too! It just doesn't have the power that was promised to run a 25" blade! The company should recall the 391 and fix the many mistakes that they engineered into that POS!!!

      I've bought 5 brand new Stihl saws as well as an edger and every time the dealer has started them in front of me before I took them home. Pretty sure it's a requirement as a Stihl dealer so they don't send out a lemon. Stihl also has a 2 year warrantee on their saws providing you buy the mix oil at the same time. I'm not saying their 2 stroke mix is the best, but its stupid not to buy a pack for the extra warrantee. The saw also comes with a year warrantee regardless, so if you bought a saw that you didn't see run, and couldn't get it running for "more than 5 minutes" yourself, but still decided not to warrantee it for (at least) a year and "a couple months," how is that Stihl's fault and not yours? And your local shop charging you $250 has absolutely nothing to do with Stihl. Your shop sets the hourly rate, not Stihl. Providing your story is totally accurate and true (no offense, I have doubts), it sounds like you have an untrustworthy dealer and that you should've been more proactive with the warrantee process. Once again, neither of those are problems on Stihl's side.
      .
      As a logger myself and a friend of a few loggers, you're comment about them "falling a long ways" for us is totally unfounded. Stihl has been and will continue to be the number one saw brand in the US and worldwide (with Husqvarna being a close second) amongst professionals. The ms461 (my current go to) was the default saw used by multiple government agencies such as the USFS and BLM as well as timber fallers up until its discontinuation last year. Now the 500i and 661 are what most people run, the former being what gov agencies are using. If you buy an ms391 expecting it to pull a 25" or 28" bar and keep up with one of those saws, then I have some beach front property in Kansas to sell ya. As I showed a 391 will run a 28" setup fine, but it won't be fast.

      Specs for the MS391 suggest 20" bar, not 25" for the reason mentioned. It can operate at 25" but not optimal and not the recommended bar length. I purchased my MS391 and had to special order the 25" . I also bought the 20" for most jobs.

      @@edandchristina617it was one of the recommended bar lengths for them, I believe up until 2021, and i got mine with a 25. The recommended bar lengths for a lot of their saws changed that year, and I don't really know why. My 661 runs a 36 no problem, but for a while it wasn't recommended to run anything over a 32. The stihl website lists the largest bar for the 881 to be the 41, but the catalog at my local shop lists the 59 as being the largest recommended bar for it. I got it, warrantied and everything, with 25, 47, and 59 inch bars and chains. My only point is that recommended bars change, and I figured the extra info might be interesting.
