When I was a taxi driver, licensed by The New Forest District Council, in Hampshire, I used to pick up and drop off passengers at all the London airports frequently. As long as it is pre-booked, you can pick up anywhere in the country. A memorable one for me was a fare from Heathrow to Aberdeen! Booked and paid for in advance. What you CAN'T do is "ply for hire" outside your licensed area.
The red van most probably has the registration plate mounted high up because it can then legally tow a small trailer and the registration plate remains visible if the trailer doesn’t have one
But isn't the point that there is a space for the number plate built into the left hand door, complete with lights to illuminate the plate? There it would still be visible even when towing something.
Some company's will mount the numberplate high up to prevent them from being stolen. The actual plate location on the vehicle isn't set in stone, as long as it can be read clearly from behind, and a light to illuminate the plate at night, which this van has.
Hi Tony, Can't afford a stamp for the postcard :) but @14:40 the red van might have the number plate that high due to towing a trailer most of the time 🤔
EVERY driver, not just professional drivers, should re-take their test EVERY 5-7yrs.. AUDI & BMW drivers should be forced to re-take theirs EVERY WEEK until the rules, that apply to other road users, sink in!!
Yep, you should be made to take a UK professional driving test to drive professionally in the UK. All passenger vehicle drivers (private hire, taxis, minibuses etc) should also be made to re-take a pro test on a regular basis, perhaps every 5-10 years. This test should include communication skills including spoken English. Same with delivery scooters. How we allow learner drivers to work doing deliveries without ever having taken a driving test baffles me! Surely, insurance companies shouldn't be covering them to work as pro drivers without passing a driving test? It should be illegal. And council traffic wardens on learner plates issuing tickets and fines to qualified drivers? It's all a bit insane.
Regarding that guy at Heathrow on the phone, it's still illegal to use your phone in a stationary car. The only 2 times you can use your phone in a car is a) if you have to phone the emergency services and can't pull over and b) to pay for food at a drive thru
Those Wolverhampton private hire vehicles are all up here in Nottingham too, I heard it's the quickest place to get licensed and possibly the cheapest too
As a taxi driver in Vancouver, in the 70's the ultimate fare was a BC Pilot ... to Seattle. Had to be on board in command of the bridge as it entered Vancouver Harbour, you see. Perfect graveyard run at the end of the shift! 140 miles, then back up the I5 ...
@@andyalder7910I thought dropping off was permitted but they were not allowed to pick up a paying fare while in the London operating area? I could be wrong
You should be plated for the area that you work in. When I did my taxi badge course 1 guy never spoke English at all and he still passed, people running the course were giving the test answers away.
Great LDC Tony. Lot of entitled numpties out and about!!! It’s frustrating, watching other drivers blatantly defying the rules of the road!!! Take care 👍👍👍
The Wolverhampton cabs are probably coming from the Havant area nr Portsmouth. I have seen loads of Skodas parked up with Wolverhampton badges on the back. Not sure why they are in South Hampshire.
If you look carefully, the Red van has a tow bar if & when a trailer is hooked up you will not be able to see the rear number of the van, hence why the number plate on the van in that positioned top left hand side.
But isn't the point that there is a space for the number plate built into the left hand door, complete with lights to illuminate the plate? There it would still be visible even when towing something.
It has always been my understanding that if you are towing a trailer it must display the same number plate as the vehicle you’re towing it with. Doesn't matter whether the trailer is a compressor, generator, flatbed, caravan or whatever, the same rule applies. Could be for when a demountable crane or lift is fitted?
I drove buses in Manchester for a while and really appreciate your videos. Regarding the taxis, in Manchester they had to be vetted for their licence and so lots registered with Wolverhampton so as not to be vetted in Manchester. So, have they got something to hide?
The number plate at the top is most likely due to towing and having the van registration plate visible. It is a requirement for having the same number plate on the trailer as the vehicle that is towing the trailer so there is no direct additional benefit but it could be making it easier at mobile checkpoints to see the vehicle and trailer match, especially with machinery thefts going on
Electric Audi, clearly trying to outdo the ICE versions with even more righteous indignation. Triumph TR3A, friend of my father has 2 of them and several TR4's that he restored, lovely cars.
I'm a taxi driver from Liverpool and Wolverhampton plated taxis are taking over everywhere so much so I have to work outside of Liverpool myself to earn what I normally earn each night. Shouldn't be allowed to happen.

Hi Mate loving your videos, just a quick comment about the driver registered in Wolverhampton , i 'm a Wolverhampton Licenced Driver and apparently as long as the Taxi company has a Wolverhampton operators licence they can have Wolverhampton Licenced drivers, a lot of companies from all over the country use Wolverhampton as they seem to be the cheapest, hope this helps
The passenger might have been from Wolverhampton and driven to London. It can happen I took a taxi from Wolverhampton to Blackpool once so it’s possible.
Exactly what I was thinking could be the case. My dad was a private hire taxi driver for a few years and used to do runs down to the London airports (and sometimes even further south) from Leicestershire on a somewhat frequent basis so it wouldn't surprise me.

The van with the high number plate ~ probably often tows different trailers (he had a tow bar on his vehicle) and to save having to have number plates on them he has his always visible plate on his van ?
Colchester in Essex has an increasing number of Wolverhampton registered taxis. The reason being Wolverhampton licensing is cheaper and a lot less paperwork to complete. There is nothing to stop a Wolverhampton registered taxi working elsewhere. They just need to Wolverhampton once a year to do the inspection.
They should also enforce the "clear field of vision" rules, I see phones attached to the windscreen right in front of the drivers view. One BMW Mini Cab had 3 across his windscreen and one on the vent watching live football

A lot of Uber drivers around Preston and Manchester Airport all seem to be working on Wolverhampton Plates, why they can’t get licensed by their local authority is beyond me
