- In this video I identify the single individual (not a business, government or entity) who owns the most land in the USA and how he got to own so much land while also providing a little history lesson on landownership in the United States and the reason why landownership has been an important aspect of American society. Nobody should have to pay property taxes after their land is paid for.
Constitutionally we don't! We must stand now!
I suppose we shouldn't expect to pay any taxes? But yet you want roads, schools, police, etc? If you say income taxes should pay for that, why not real estate taxes too? After all, real estate often is way more tied to government services. IF you own a lot of land, you are likely to need more services. (and remember, real estate taxes are actually way less. Taxes in the USA are MUCH MUCH lower as a percentage of income than they were 50 years ago.
Good luck getting that changed in your life time.
That's why the government will always own the Land, your car, house, and whatever is deemed as asset worthy of taxing..... Don't pay it and they will take it back or away from you if they so choose....

btw the next time you buy land for a house or for anything, make sure mineral rights is added to the contract and you might want to add the depth of said mineral rights. if you read the find print you might find that mineral rights ISN'T added to the contract. oh, and just a side note, unless you're rich never buy a house on a corner, as you end up paying double in property taxes. my mom learned the hard way on that one.

Not true. I live on a corner and my property taxes are the same as my neighbor's based on assessed value multiplied by tax rate.

In addition to mineral rights, be sure you own the water rights. Years ago, in some western states, speculators purchased water rights on thousands of acres of unimproved land. Later, when people built homes on this land and drilled a well, they learned that they did not own the water. In order to use the water, they had to pay a fee to those who owned the water.
@@dennismckown4951 I don't know where you get your information from (it was on the internet so it must be true...right?) but I had a house for over 20 years on a corner with sidewalks on 2 sides and my taxes weren't any higher than my neighbors

I am surprised that Malone only owns 2.1 million acres. In Australia the largest land owner is Gina Reinhardt who owns approx 22 million acres. That's about 1.2% of the entire landmass of Australia.

You do not own it. Miss property taxes and you will find out. Even if your home is fully paid for. Say 350,000 $ home you owe say 5,000. They take it. .. and sale it at auction for way more than 5000. And keep the whole enchilada. You don't own your home.. don't ever think you do.

In Canada I was on a government comity to save the farm land as the towns and cities were spreading out on good farm land They came to a conclusion that they could build on 10 acres per 1/4 section It didn’t work The towns would annex the land and build homes on it It boils down is it worth more to build on it r grow a crop on it Another thing is that the government will get more taxes if there is buildings on it than a crop

I pay 1/100 of the value of my land to the state every year. So, I have a 30 year mortgage to the bank and a permanent mortgage to the state.

Red Emerson is third at 1.9 Million acres. He lives in my small town. He's a billionaire that wears logging gear when he's on the job. Started out as a mill worker in the logging industry.
For twenty years I worked for Red. He is “the salt of the earth”. If he was close by he would jump right in and help. Most CEOs wouldn’t know what to do. Red’s worked along side his employees for years. He is up there in years now but visits sawmills every day. Glad I knew him.

Ted Turner is the largest single person land owner in the USA. I met him once. I worked at a gas station in MT during college and he’d come in from time to time and get a coffee and a can of Copenhagen. Nice guy!

True that! Ironically, here where I live, much of the land that was 'homesteaded' was sold for back taxes shortly after the new owner took over.

Many local & state govt's. gouge owners for all they can get out of them, whether by direct costs or added fee's or by regulation's. Also while currency is devalueing your taxes will be increasing. Davy Jones - That is the best way to look at real estate "ownership". At least where I live in Western New York State, and I believe in most other places, "government(s)" own all lands. I love having my family's name on our deed to our little place in the woods, but stop paying taxes and we can be evicted like anyone else.
EDIT: Please understand that in writing the above I was not complaining, as I am perhaps a rarity in that I am a proud taxpayer! I also should add that I was a proud career civil servant because I was able to save taxpayers a lot of money throughout my career. I commented because every person considering the relative merits of rental vs purchase should keep all aspects in mind. Furthermore, every taxpayer (and we all pay taxes in one form or another whether we own or rent) should make wize cost/benefit decisions and vote accordingly.
And in exchange for the 'rent' (i.e. taxes), the state provides police and fire support. It builds hospitals and schools, highways and sewer systems. The generally accepted term is 'the common good'.

@Mike M My maternal Grandparents took a trip on their racing sloop from Cayuga Lake in New York State to Florida and the Bahamas the year I was born, discovering along the way that they could live on the sailboat paying a minimum of taxes. Upon their return Gramps set about a four year project of building a more commodious ketch in their barn, and they sailed off into retirement. Their farm was SOLD to the state and is part of a state park, thus through profit recouping their years of tax paying, as most real estate holders do, which is part of the reason many chose "ownership" rather than renting. Their nomadic retirement is being copied by many these days in boats and motorhomes, though the residual costs (and inconveniences) must also be considered along with the freedom and adventure. Perhaps the only time we are tax free is after we are laid to rest!

I do like your approach; Had the Founding Fathers been wise enough to include "Life, Liberty, the pursuit of Happiness, and a piece of Property", we could simply devide land area by population and end the problem of homelessness.

320 acres allowed my Italian and Finnish ancestors who had worked in the mines for almost a century to emerge onto the Montana plains. They starved, they froze , they sent food and fiber to two world wars. They used the land as a collateral to build a bar and trucking businesses. They would have been shocked to learn three generations later their spawn graduated, from Stanford, UC, Tennessee and OSU to name a few. Lincoln was right it started with the land.
I'll bet John Malone isn't taxed the same rate as the average guy.

Actually, I think the feds are the largest landowner in this country.
I was told it used to be International Paper. They owned several forests, mainly in the SE part of the country.
It’s possible but I’d have to look into it...in my other video about who the richest real estate investor is in America, I mention international paper and the land deal they did with this investor
@@DannySeeum Since the paper industry had a change in players, it may have been in passing. Like Goodyear had the majority of rubber leases but they expired. Before that, about every rubber item in this country and the world over was live rubber that came from Goodyear. That is one reason why they were so much bigger of a rubber manufacturing company than any combination of the others out there.
When I was growing up I wanted a house on 20 acres of land would really like to add 150 but my heart was set on 20 as I got older and taxes increased I see that property becomes more of a burden than what it’s worth now I own a little two bedroom house on the third of an acre of land and I am more than happy with that and it cost me $200 each month I have to come up with in property taxes for the town and 30 years I will have spent more money paying taxes on that land and what I did to purchase that land

Ted Turner leases alot of land in Nebraska ,fun fact Nebraska has the largest underwater Reservoir in the Country that's how the farmers are able too grow so much Corn they can irrigate. And that is why I think Ted Turner has so much land Leased in Nebraska it has Water Right's.

The only kinds of land that the federal government can own is listed in the US constitution. Most of the land that the federal government claims ownership to is not permitted by the constitution.

I would delight in owing a 640 acre farm near Forest City, IOWA. It is prime farmland. Soil is black as peat moss. Perhaps 300 limousine cattle would work just right.
