I think what makes this song so great is how the lyrics for the chorus are so simple yet profound. She's going through a roller coaster of emotions: In the first part she puts the blame things associated with her lover, not directly at him. Still hoping to believe he didn't abandon her on his own accord. "Did your boots stop working?" (Humour and sarcasm to deal with a hurtful situation) "Did your truck break down?" (Contrasted with the first line, a more logical and serious tone) "Did you burn through the money?" (She's worried and fearful for him) "Did your ex found out?" (Jealousy) Now in this part she goes directly addressing him. "Was the whiskey flowing? Were you in a fight?" (She's pessimistic and doubtful about him, jumping to conclusions thinking he's back to his old habits again) "Did the nerves come get you? What's your alibi?" I think what makes this song so great is how the lyrics for the chorus are so simple yet profound. She's going through a roller coaster of emotions:
In the first part she puts the blame things associated with her lover, not directly at him. Still hoping to believe he didn't abandon her on his own accord.
"Did your boots stop working?" (Humour and sarcasm to deal with a hurtful situation)
"Did your truck break down?" (Contrasted with the first line, a more logical and serious tone)
"Did you burn through the money?" (She's worried and fearful for him)
"Did your ex found out?" (Jealousy)
Now in this part she goes directly addressing him.
"Was the whiskey flowing? Were you in a fight?" (She's pessimistic and doubtful about him, jumping to conclusions thinking he's back to his old habits again)
