Ended up at the Doctors approx 6 weeks ago BP 195/125 feeling awful. He was already talking about possibility of BP medication becoming my new norm, which I didn't want. I Had a look around the web and kept seeing good things about whole food plant based diets so thought I would take the plunge. 6 weeks later weight is down by 18lbs and BP is now ranging from 118/75 to 120/80 max. Finding the diet unbelievably easy to stick to and enjoying my increased energy levels and general feeling of well being.

What did the Dr say about that? I hope he was pleased about your weight loss and blood pressure going down. Because some Doctors get mad when you work on your own to get things done, and don't take their poison.

My dad who's a MD eats so much meat and cheese, has high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and major digestive issues. I am trying to convince him to eat a WPBD but he wont listen to me. Im hoping if he sees the research himself, he will give it a shot.

    • @HealingLifeKwikly

I don't know if I have the links to his studies, but the NutritionFacts.org website has over 2000 videos on hundreds of health topics, all searchable alphabetically, and each 3-8-minute video summarizes the results from 3-20 research studies on some topic, and the full links to all the studies can be accessed under the Sources Cited tab under the video.
I teach and research nutrition as part of my university work, and this may also help:
For overall, long-term health, diets that are very low in fat (~7-15% of calories) and that are dominated by WHOLE plant foods (vegan or mostly vegan) have an unmatched track record that indicates they are the healthiest. And those diets generally had 70% of calories or more from WHOLE food carbs.
OBESITY is related to a wide range of other diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancers) and health problems (e.g., failing joints, low energy), and is an epidemic in America, with 70% of Americans being overweight or obese. So far, the all-you-can-eat diet that has achieved the best weight loss after one year in a randomized controlled study is a whole food plant-based diet with 7-15% calories from fat. Notice that this is a fraction of the fat intake found in diets that Americans commonly but misleadingly call “low-fat” diets.
      www.nature.com/articles/nutd20173
      thebroadstudy.com/
Significantly, the original intervention only ran three months, but people who were on the diet during the experiment kept on the diet and kept losing weight from three to six month, and then maintained their weight loss from six to twelve months.
DIABETES is a growing epidemic in America, with over one-third of Americans being pre-diabetic or diabetic. Very low carb, high-fat ketogenic diets have become popular, and these can achieve significant weight loss and improvement in biomarkers and blood glucose control. However, satisfying these short-term results may be, in the long run, people eating very low-carb diets have been found to have a wide variety of negative side effects, including much higher rates of Afib and higher rates of death from heart disease and all-cause mortality.
The human body evolved to efficiently process large quantities of whole food carbohydrates, so the inability to process carbohydrates efficiently and safely is not normal or healthy.
However, WHOLE food plant-based diets with 7-15% calories from fat (and most calories from WHOLE food carbs) have been repeatedly demonstrated to bring diabetics’ blood glucose levels under control while having numerous other side benefits for heart health, inflammation, etc. For example, here is a randomized controlled trial in which a WHOLE food plant-based diets with 7-15% calories from fat brought diabetics’ blood glucose levels under control and lowered their LDL levels by 39% in just three weeks and on a diet with 73% calories from carbohydrates. To see an overview of the results, see the 2:47 mark in
      nutritionfacts.org/video/benefits-of-a-macrobiotic-diet-for-diabetes/
The direct link to the study is
Soare A, Khazrai YM, Del Toro R, et al. The effect of the macrobiotic Ma-Pi 2 diet vs. the recommended diet in the management of type 2 diabetes: the randomized controlled MADIAB trial. Nutr Metab (Lond). 2014;11:39.
Many people can’t believe a diet that is very high in carbs can cure diabetes for most people but that is because a) they never got their fat intake low enough (~10-15% of calories) to cure their insulin resistance, and b) the carbs they were eating were processed carbs that cause a faster rise in blood glucose levels than do WHOLE food carbs-especially when whole food carbs are eaten in the context of lots of vegetables and fiber. In reality, all large, slim, and relatively diabetes free populations have historically gotten most of their calories from whole food carbs-rice, wheat, barley, potatoes, farro, millet, sorghum, spelt, corn, etc.
HEART DISEASE is the #1 killer of men and women in the western world, and although we usually only label someone as “having heart disease” after they have an incident, in reality, the vast majority of westerners have diseased coronary arteries and generally had plaque build-up in their arteries by the time they were ten years old. This is not normal or healthy as the impaired functioning or our arteries gives rise to a wide range of other conditions and diseases (angina, heart attacks, strokes, erectile dysfunction, some migraines, dementia, neuropathy, diabetic nerve pain, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, etc.). The only diet that has been shown to be able to stop even serious heart disease in its tracks and achieve some reversal of atherosclerosis in multiple multi-year studies-while dropping rates of major CVD events to zero or close to zero is a WHOLE food plant-based diets with 7-15% calories from fat. For example, see
      dresselstyn.com/JFP_06307_Article1.pdf
      www.dresselstyn.com/Esselstyn_Three-case-reports_Exp-Clin-Cardiol-July-2014.pdf
Added sugars are NOT healthy, but in the context of the sugar-fat debate, it is worth noting that Dr. Esselstyn was able stop the progression of heart disease, achieve some plaque shrinkage, and avoid future major CVD events even in “death’s doorstep” heart disease patients who were compliant with his original diet-a diet which did NOT limit sugar.

      www.dresselstyn.com/site/study03/

CANCERS: In general, people eating a whole food plant-based diet have lower or much lower rates of various cancers and better cancer survival. Here is an ocean of related research:
      nutritionfacts.org/topics/cancer/
OXIDATIVE STRESS and INFLAMMATION are involved in most major chronic diseases. Significantly, the most anti-inflammatory diet you can eat is a whole food plant-based diet, and plant foods have on average, eight times as much antioxidant punch as does the average animal food.
Carlsen MH, Halvorsen BL, Holte K, Bøhn SK, Dragland S, Sampson L, Willey C, Senoo H, Umezono Y, Sanada C, Barikmo I, Berhe N, Willett WC, Phillips KM, Jacobs DR Jr, Blomhoff R. The total antioxidant content of more than 3100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs and supplements used worldwide. Nutr J. 2010 Jan 22;9:3.
      nutritionfacts.org/video/antioxidant-power-of-plant-foods-versus-animal-foods/
TOXINS: Toxic industrial and agricultural chemicals naturally accumulate in the fat of animals, and these toxins include chemicals that are obesogenic, diabesogenic, atherogenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, neurotoxins, and endocrine disruptors (which disrupt fertility and reproduction). These toxic chemicals naturally accumulate at high levels in animal fat through the processes of bioaccumulation and biomagnification.
Bioaccumulation: A cow eats grass with trace amounts of toxic chemicals in it, and some of those chemicals wind up in their fat, and as they eat more and more grass, the levels of toxic chemicals build up. Biomagnification: A predator (wolf, eagle, tuna, human) that eats other animals that have toxic chemicals built up in their bodies can wind up with extremely high levels of toxins in their bodies. The general rule to avoid toxic chemicals in your food is to eat as low on the food chain as possible, which basically means eating plant foods-but avoiding those that are sprayed heavily (e.g., non-organic strawberries). One side benefit of eating lots of whole plant foods is that they boost your body’s ability to detoxify itself. As a result, people who eat vegetarian and vegan diets typically have much lower levels of toxic chemicals in their bodies than do those who eat meat or meat and dairy. For example, see the following short video summarizing the research on one class of pollutants (links to the studies summarized in the video can be found by clicking “Sources Cited” under the video).
      nutritionfacts.org/video/flame-retardant-pollutants-and-child-development/

Then there is a mountain of studies showing the benefits of low-fat whole food plant-based diets for pretty much every health condition under the sun. Wanna' get rates of gallstones and diverticulitis to zero? VLF WFPB diets can do that. Wanna' reduce or eliminate acne and improve osteoarthritis? They can do that to. Wanna' get your risk of dementia as low as possible even though you have the genetic marker that predisposes you to greater dementia risk? They can do that too. Etc. Etc.
Meanwhile, more nuanced recent studies consistently show that replacing animal fat and protein with WHOLE plant foods/carbs consistently yields better biomarkers and health outcomes.
Furthermore, reviews of the research on the thermic effect of food show that people burn more calories in the hours after a meal when eating a very low fat plant-based diet (9-16% more calories per hour). pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31021710/
Population studies show the best overall long-term results on diets dominated by whole plant foods.
And in case you need more official backup on going totally plant-based, the world’s largest organization of nutrition professionals (AND) says that a well-managed vegan diet is healthy for all stages of life.
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27886704/
To be clear, the research isn't good enough to know whether TOTALLY PB is best for this or that person, or whether a little fish or dairy 3-8 times a month would be better. Also, if folks go totally PB, they MUST take B12 and find vegan sources for vitamin D, EPA/DHA, and possibly iodine. Many people fail on a PB diet because they don't know enough and think they can just eat anything and not pay attention to balance.
BTW, I went VLF WFPB 8 years ago at age 52, and saw results in days.
      Take care.

      @@leangroundbeef2322 Thanks for your reply.
"nutrition facts and esselstyn are hardly objective, unbiased sources to be getting information from?
What's biased about Esselstyn? He followed the science and is the only person on Earth to have conducted multiple multi-year trials showing you can stop and achieve some reversal of even very serious heart disease using just diet. He's just advocating for what obviously works. I work in the Cleveland area, and two of my students have reported on how his diet saved their husband's lives. It works.
As for nutrition facts, I'm guessing you haven't looked at many of their videos. There are over 2000 videos on hundreds of nutrition/health topics, with each video pulling together the findings of a few to 20 of more research studies. The videos largely consist of him reading the findings of this or that peer-reviewed research study, then describing the connection to the next research study. The actual pages, charts, quotes from the studies appear right on the screen, and much of the time, he is just telling you word-for-word what the study actually said. Complete references for each study appear under each video. To someone who doesn't know the research, Greger might appear biased, but while everyone has some bias, the research clearly indicates that diets dominated by whole plant foods are healthiest. That would be why Greger seems like an advocate for WFPB diets because they work best.
We DON'T know whether the very best overall long-term outcomes would come for you or me from a vegan diet, vegetarian diet, or one with an occasional piece of fish, egg, or meat, but the best findings are at that end of the spectrum. (And we know lots of reasons why that is the case)
      Take care.

I know the second one omitted oil because he's talked about it before. There was another one where he specifically said "whole food plant based diet" that I would assume not have oil because wfpb doesn't have oil by design.
Edit - the Mediterranean plant based diet on mental health probably used oil.
Edit 2 - it's tough with sugar & salt to determine. For me personally, I don't worry about small amounts of either because I don't have health issues that would want me to not eat them like heart issues or food addiction.

Love your podcast! I wanted to ask if a vegan diet increases the risk for bone fractures in any way? Any specific suggestions to prevent osteoporosis? Also a family member is concerned that I'm not getting enough amino acids on my vegan diet, any suggestions to help with amino acids? Thanks!

    • @RiDankulous
      @RiDankulous 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There is limited data, but one study that is interesting is looking at bone fractures in vegans versus non-vegans, but it does not prove causation. "Comparative fracture risk in vegetarians and nonvegetarians in EPIC-Oxford" is the study, I believe.
However they do not see an increased bone fracture risk in vegans with 525 mg daily of calcium. There is an increased bone fracture risk in those below it.
Because it is a population study, it can only find associations, and not prove causation. Some population studies are a bit stronger if they account for confounding factors. I'm not sure this one does. Also, when examining diet, usually questionnaires are used for the participants and they can tend to be, on average, a little less accurate.
I personally try for 525 mg daily, and I track my nutrients on cronometer, a food tracking site. I also take a vitamin supplement for iodine and it just so happens to have calcium also.
Things that get me a lot of calcium are: black beans, of which I eat a lot; spinach, I eat a good deal of it. A couple oranges can get me 10% of the 525 mg. Whole wheat of which I eat a lot can have a good amount.

    • @michellehashish5341

Exercise is a big part of the osteoporosis equation.
Weight bearing exercise ( can be light weights to whatever you feel comfortable with ) is very important for keeping your bones strong.
It is possible to get enough calcium on a whole food plant based diet.
I have seen lectures where vitamin d and vitamin k2 have been advised as apparently they have an important role in guiding the calcium to correct place eg to your bones and not into heart tissue which causes calcification.

The upshot is vegetarians and vegans weigh less so do less weight bearing exercise in their daily activities consisted compared to heavier omnivores so their bones may be weaker. It's not about the calcium. But I definitely suggest watching his video

@@herbevans2727 I've lived without a gallbladder for 12 years now and it hasn't been easy for me. I wish I wouldn't have removed it... At the time i was 20 and I didnt know you could get rid of them naturally. I suffered with the stones for 3 years and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and they couldn't see the stones in the ultra sound and so many tests. Even a camera down my throat. For a while they thought the pain i was having was all in my head.. but after 3 years they finally saw them. They said I had mud/ sand in my gallbladder and because of that the stones weren't visible in the tests. After so many years I still I feel nauseous and get stomach pain every now and then.

My example is the only person I know who had their gallbladder removed so I understand it doesn't prove everyone, or even most people, will have the same experience - just that some people do have a positive outcome. My mother would have a painful attack if she ate any dairy but otherwise she fared really well. I hope you can find some relief.

Depends. If baking look up "flax egg" recipe. Sometimes soy flour + water works in baked goods. For eating, I like tofu scrambles made with black salt and nutritional yeast, etc. I have also seen some recipes using besan (chickpea) flour cooked kind of like an omelette.

It is disappointed that we have doctors, both young that claim ignorance when it comes to Nutrition. You want to believe that doctors are seekers of knowledge and open minded but we find that is not the case. They will listen to and believe Pharma studies but aren’t open to the idea that Nutrition plays a part. It’s amazing.

    • @soilikasanen

Yeah, it´s unfortunate. Furthermore, doctors that dare to challenge the thought that "no diet is proved to cure diseases", are easily labelled as Big Pharma &Food Industry conspiracy theorists, which should not be listened to. Even if industry-university - partnerships are obvious.
