    The container concept is exactly what I need to keep in mind while I pack for a two week trip into a medium-sized suitcase.

    So glad that you finally put this back on TH-cam! I won't go to any other site for podcasts, so if it's not on TH-cam, to my brain it doesn't exist. Thank you for making it exist again!

    ***FOR THE PERSON CLEANING out the stuff from her parents and her childhood.... Your neighbors saw you bring in items, let them see you remove them (donate or whatever). You dont have to tell them you are donating the stuff. If you need a reason and if they ask, say that your distant cousin Lucy wanted it and you are dropping it off (or having it shipped) to her. Label your boxes "send to Lucy" (or whatever name you pick). Either way, it's your business, but if you need to deflect the ignorant scrutiny of others...use cousin Lucy as your excuse.

      Also, take things away from the house when it's dark in the evening. Or take an empty suitcase into the house and fill it with the unwanted stuff, it's less obvious that way

    I love your show! It occurs to me that the container concept is similar to budgeting. When you budget, you have to acknowledge how much money is actually coming in, but then you get to decide what areas you want to spend the money on. So ultimately you are in control. With the container concept, you have to acknowledge how much space you have, but then you have the freedom to decide what to do with that space.

    I love your suggestion re: the earring storage and thinking of it as a 30 pair instead of a 32 pair limit. Wondering where I can use that pearl of wisdom!! 😉

    this is SO HELPFUL for the container concept! Thank you!!!

    Love that it is on YT! thank you so much for that! i would love to see you sit and talk ( like cas, clutterbug does) For some weird reason, i am so visual and so NOT auditory, that i cannot listen to podcasts !my mind wanders the sound tunes out unless i have a visual. I tried this one, but the sound bars are not enough :(
    I did listen to this earlier on the blog, but i really have to wrestle through it unfortunately. Took me 4 hours, lol! Ill just stick to video and hope my question does not get answered in the podcast, lol :) i keep recommending you to people, and FINALLY the husband is getting on board with the Less is better :) really love how your brain thinks like my brain and a method that WORKS! i hope you keep doing this. :)

    Hi Dana, I’ve binge ‘listened to’ your TH-cam videos this weekend whilst decluttering. This morning whilst waiting for the kettle to brew I opened a kitchen cupboard door and the contents were all over the place. 7 mins later I had removed 2 items to the place where I would look for them first, the rest organised and it’s now much easier to find things in there as well as some free space that wasn’t there before. 🎉 thank you for staring your knowledge and answering people’s questions 😊

    I'd put the big loads of decluttering in the car at night so the neighbours won't see. It's none of their business! Set off early to whatever recycling facility is accessible to you and plan a nice café and magazine or meet a friend afterwards. Every blessing. XG Ire

    Guilt free clipping . . .PINTEREST!! . You can dream and edit your ideas on your phone. I found my clipping boxes a few weeks ago and enjoyed a few days of decluttering them. I pulled out the very best ideas to save like Dana talks about. Now I'm starting to snap pictures and use the "share" function in the photo app to post them to my Pinterest boards.

    Good episode! I solved my earring and jewelry clutter problem by switching to fine jewelry one year ago. Meaning that I only buy (or accept/keep) fine jewelry from now on, and not any costume/fake pieces at all. I bought a one layer jewelry box and decluttered the old triple layer one I’d had for decades.
    I started with 2 pearl stud earrings of different sizes, last Christmas, and decluttered all my fake pearl earrings. Then I purchased a pair of small gold hoops for $200 and tossed out all the $20 metal, beaded hoops I’d collected over the years.
    I bought one diamond necklace (De Beers collaboration with Peoples, on clearance!) and tossed all my old necklaces with rhinestones.
    I can’t fit any more jewelry this year into the budget but I’ll continue to spend the same amount next year as I begin to replace my rings, then bracelets.
    I just want to say… ladies, if you can create a budget to start a small fine jewelry collection and get rid of everything else - do it! Such a huge boost to my confidence in life! If you need to keep anything for sentimental reasons (I kept 2 of my grandma’s brooches), take them out of your jewelry box and put them with your keepsake items.

      @@rosywilson3076 That’s true! I actually didn’t buy any jewelry for 12 years! My costume pieces were old. I saved money, bought a used car with cash up front, and traveled instead.

    Since I've found Dana, this is the 3rd year of having one tote of "Fall Decor". The first year I pared down to a single tote was more freeing than hard! Last year, I received a vase as a gift that is definitely Fall decor. I displayed it, but it didn't make the cut when it came to putting the Fall decor away. This year, I purchased a new pumpkin, knowing the old one with the broken stem was going away....the new one took it's place. This makes me look new/thrift items differently, knowing something will have to go to make room for it. BTW, all my Christmas decor is in 3 totes....that's the limit!

    To the person decluttering a closet after an ED, if you get stuck before you get through all of the storage units and closets, you might consider making modules or capsules or whatever at each size so you know you have a full working wardrobe at each size if you wind up needing to keep a closet for extra sizes. I have found the module concept works well because it is more flexible than the capsule idea. So just real quick, a module is 6-7 pieces that all work together. 3 tops, 2 pants, a topper or layering piece, and the optional 7th item is a 1 piece like a dress or .... jumpsuit? Bodysuit? Those arent the right terms but neither is onesie. 😂 but anyway, each module works together and then you can add modules. So maybe the next size range has 1 or 2 summer modules, and 1 or 2 winter modules and they are color adjacent so that you can use some stuff in both and you would have a fully functioning wardrobe in less space than an average persons closet. Just thinking back to when I was decluttering clothes how I kind of went in stages and even though my weight fluctuates through a few sizes each month Ive been able to pare down layers so I have function all the way through.
    As a side note, I found combining storage units before i got rid of them completely very helpful to reduce stress around the payments and gave me a quick win feeling and I could just do a few boxes at a time in the last one. And the feeling of having everything in one space was very relaxing.

    I learned to involve micromanagers in the declutter process. Defining a goal helps to manage expectations. Reminding them it is a process and this didn't happen overnight. Discuss how to keep this area usable. Either it will be easier with help or they will recognize that progress is being made.

  • @kathychatterton5623
    @kathychatterton5623 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I don’t know if this will be any value to the person with an ED, but many of us struggle with weight fluctuation, some of them quite wide. I recent went to having two distinct closet areas. My portion of the master bedroom closet for clothes that fit and a separate space for other items. The secondary closet is a small awkward to access space, I got rid of enough duh donations that I could make the change. It now holds my few sentimental clothing items plus items that are either too large or two small, all in about 4 feet of rod space rather than the 12 feet of space those items used to take up. Just the act of separating these closets helped me let go of a lot of things. I went from needing 12 feet of hanging space to four feet. Once trendy clothes that I know I won’t wear again, even if they fit, are gone. Some things that were once sentimental that are no longer that sentimental went. Based on my budget, the style of clothing and my current needs, I made the decision to keep only 1-2 outfits in a size larger than I am currently wearing and whatever clothing I have that is smaller IF they are items that I would realistically wear (jeans and turtlenecks really don’t go out of style). Next chance I get I am going to remove a clothing rod in that awkward closet so I can’t fill it again.

    • @kathychatterton5623
      @kathychatterton5623 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Let me add that having a secondary space, I don’t need to go to that space unless my weight changes again. No daily visual reminders of what I see as “failures”.

    I used to keep magazines. I will not fall back on the internet because Physical things trump virtual things. Virtual things are like a huge file cabinet. Holding the paper is special. I had magazines, clippings from the late 1980's until i decided i wasn't going to use them. For example, i had a famous actress's recipe that i was keeping because it was hers, but I DON'T COOK. I had decor pages from back then that i liked but wouldn't do 50 years later. I had to do crafts pages that i knew i wouldn't make. etc. ...

    For the earring lady she could have a dish for “current favorites” and maybe let herself have 35 or so 😂

    • @andreamiller6200
      @andreamiller6200 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      To respect the container as a limit, what if that were turned around to say the limit *IS* 30 and the current favorites could amount to the 2 extra spaces. Remember that Dana does not advocate for stuffing a container to its limit.

  • @kathychatterton5623
    @kathychatterton5623 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    For the woman agonizing over clipping, my collection was getting out of hand. I was able to “debulk” them using what Dana calls awkward pauses and I call stolen moments. I discovered that many duplicated information (only needed one), that many no longer fit my life (no kids at home), I tried the recipe and hated it or an prominent ingredient or my obsession with Indian food ran its course and I would prefer going to a restaurant for a treat, rather than keep ingredients on hand. It made a huge difference in the amount of clippings I kept.
