  • On the morning of the 17th September 2021, class 52 locomotive D1015 ventured out onto the mainline from Kidderminster to Avonmouth docks and back.
Its then seen in this video passing Bristol Parkway station with 66719 and a row of cement tankers in tow on the 6M42 09:20 Avonmouth Hanson Sdg Gbrf to Penyffordd Cement Gbrf.
The loco D1015 hauled the train as far as Gloucester New Yard where it was detached and sent back to Kidderminster.
The locomotive was on the train as a mainline test to see how capable it was hauling a heavy load before its planned railtour on the 25th September.
However sadly the locomotive failed the test after an engine seized and so will no longer be appearing on its planned railtour.

Gorgeous movement, what a shame to learn of its test failure.

That bought back some memories. I used to see Westerns hauling freight at Bristol Parkway back in the early to mid seventies.

She'll be back out on the main line soon for another test run attempt. Loco has been running on both power units on the SVR for a few weeks now, successfully.

Empty freight, not loaded. Those cement wagons will have just been discharged at Hanson's in Avonmouth docks. Still quite a gradient coming up out of there mind. Nice video :)

I’d heard that Western Yeoman was the design inspiration for the class 59, and ultimately the 66, but seeing the two designs together, there are similarities in the cab roof, front windows and doors, but beyond that, I’m not sure I can see much else!

Never thought I would see the mighty 52 on freight mind you I never thought that of the deltic either

During their service lives Westerns were commonplace on freights, and they ventured well away from WR metals too. They were daily visitors to Wolverton (Milton Keynes) on mendip stone trains, sometimes I would `spot` two some days. This was in the early `70`s, During the same period I saw one in Bedford station on freight which reversed down towards Bedford St. Johns station one memorable Saturday morning. Wonderful days and wonderful locomotives, my personal favourite class of all time and I consider myself extremely fortunate in seeing them in BR service days regularly. I`d seen the entire fleet before the last were withdrawn. Such a sad day.

@@DP-uq7fy when they withdrew the monsters from the past it spelt the last of the glory days for leviathan like this the 40s and deltic alike yet it's a power band only these old machines can provide somehow they seem more solid and better built than the purpose built 66 or what ever if they had of kept them on even in small numbers like they did the 20s the hole wouldn't be so damn big of you know what I mean

@@steventhornton4716 I absolutely agree. Trouble is, first we had Beeching, followed by rationalisation of our railways, and now we`ve ended up with virtually no traditional industries which require rail freight movements, and a passenger network which is tailored almost entirely around the commuter. Thank goodness my `spotting days` between `68 and `80 were during the period when hundreds of real locomotives in all their variants were providing me and thousands of others incredible interest throughout every corner of the UK. Today, sadly our railways are broken. Progress? I don`t think so!

@@DP-uq7fy the most industry we have now is pushing pencils in an office all damn day thats what happens when you outsource to cut cost the future of your industry collapses because when you finally want to source your steel from say Europe there's none left to even weld with as we produce so little so thanks maggie

It is a good thing to give the old locos revenue work to do, rather than wasting fuel/money on load-banking. It gets everything up to temperature and 'clears the tubes' . (figuratively speaking)

Easy mistake, mixing up original 1970s footage with a video from 2021.
Video titles are hard to read and class 66s were popular back then too.
