I remember as a child traveling from Paddington in the sixties and early seventies that the horns of the diesel locomotives sounded more like a mournful chime, it added to the drama of it all to an impressionable kid!
@@MrThrash37 The D.T.G. banned the expression "Guys" many years ago. Permitted alternative terms are: "Bloke", "Chap" or "Geezer" with appropriate plurals, of course.
Since seeing them thundering along the sea wall at Dawlish in the late ‘60s, I have always thought that the Westerns at speed had a hint of Spitfire about them. Both iconic designs.
They look GORGEOUS in Ochre! I am a lifelong engineer and worked on Courier and Ranger as a volunteer decades ago, I adore these locos and they coudl have gone on for YEARS after their withdrawl date!face-orange-frowning retired far too early replace by the HST (at the time HATED the class 43 but later came to love them as well) they too are now sadly gone replaced by electric crap that doesnt work half the time................ what does that tell us? If BR had persevered with the Westerns they would have had a SUPERB fleet. The simple fact they were diesel/hydraulic ended their lives from sheer hatred of people who did not understand how to run or even maintain such a beast.
Great video superb scenery in the first shot good to see a video of the old North and West line and as for the Westerns well no need to say any more Thanks for this one! 😊
@@robtyman4281 Even a a steam diehard, I also have a soft spot for Brush Type 2s. Not for me Warships though. Someone called them ‘Pimples’ and I can see why😉
Many a train journey, being pulled by these magnificent engines..... they are german by heritage you know , stolen design after ww2 , oh yes indeed ....
So what? Mercedes built Hitler's cars. VW's were built as the kubelwagen. Porsche designed tanks. The prototype ME109 used a Rolls Royce engine. The Royal Navy used armour plate invented and patented by Krupp. Your point is?

Excellent piece! Western Rocks was the best run D1015 did!
Which run was Western Rocks?
Are we ever going to see the return of d1062 western courier to the main line, which was said last year?
Still nice to hear the wrought-iron sound of the 50s and 60s
Very good video :)
Thank you very much!
1:38 - whys the horn honking like a goose.
Well said james walker. Nothing could compare to a merlin engine. 🤔
Is Haywood tunnel what's referred to as redhill tunnel too please?
You’re right there!

Certainly a design classic !
@@nigelmitchell351 I think the ‘Design Council’ had a hand in styling Westerns

Pity they didn't have a hand in n things like the very ugly 58's & 60's

@@dartskipper3170rolls Royce engines in me 109 ? No Daimler Benz yes read it up it's on Google,
The engines for these locos were built in Britain though.
How that has any connection with a Spitfire seriously
