I agree, the book was very long and at times difficult to read as a non-southerner (the nonchalant use of racial slurs). The movie also made Jake much more of an all around hero while the book just made him a lawyer. Good book, great movie. Definitely a topic all of America continues to struggle with, not just in the South.

Do you think you like the White Knight aspect of the movie that wasn't in the book? You get to feel better about the main character, such a hero. In the book he is just a flawed man. I think I like the realism of the book. Jake is no hero but I could see how Hollywood would want to make him one. The movie gives white people something to feel good about.

Lol trust me, as a southerner it's still just as hard to read through all the nonchalant racial slurs. Not all of us in the south are racist, though we get a bad rap because of the horribly loud minority who cling onto old Confederate ideals. Blegh.

I read the book first and watched the movie straight after and was impressed at the movies loyalty and even the subtle changes. I read that Grisham had a lot of creative control which reminded me of JK Rowling and the Harry Potter films which I think was a big part of the success

I wish so much when adaptations were made they would stick to the book, book readers are the HARDEST critics

I just read the book and I have seen the movie a few times. I like how Grisham tells a story. He knows how to build it up to a climax, but I thought Sycamore Row was better than this ending. I felt disappointed because I wanted to hear a lengthy speech by Jake, and all I got was one of the jurors boyfriend telling him how she made them close their eyes, making her the hero in the end. I felt the movie perhaps spoiled the book for me, but it was so much better in many ways, especially the acting. Also, he quickly talked to some reporters and then he left to see his wife and kids in the book. What about his house? Debts? Business.? It left so many questions for me unanswered. Read Sycamore Row. That should be a movie! Love the book!

As far as Samuel L. Jackson's best performance, you might want to check out Pulp Fiction... and as far as courtroom dramas go, have you ever seen "To Kill A Mockingbird" or "The Verdict"?

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve seen Pulp Fiction. He’s great in it but I still think he’s better in this. I’ve seen To Kill a Mockingbird, also great. Haven’t seen The Verdict.
