  • Latino is not a race. Think about cultural values, religion, language when talking about Latinos.

      If you keep repeating that very reasonable point for the rest of your life, the billions of non Americans in the rest of the world will call US people Americans and people from other places of the Americas by their individual countries or groups such as Meso Americans, Latin Americans, South Americans, Central Americans, West Indians, HispaniAmericans, PanAmericans, IberoAmericans etc etc but Americans are the people who won the two world wars and were first in the moon. So American Cars are not cars made in Brazil nor Mexico. American Cars and American Food etc are ACCORDING TO MANKIND from North of Mexico. Just saying.

    • @mariaviudez7281
      @mariaviudez7281 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elio Leturia That is very much true. Originally Germany colonized Equatorial Guinea until they sold us too Portugal. And ultimately Portugal sold us to Spain and we remained colonized since, until the first official president brought us independence and we became an independent country. The French came and colonized a few other parts of Africa, but I think it was actually before Spain went to Africa. The French, German, and Portuguese were there first I believe. 😊😊

      Thank you, Nini. As you can tell, I am only trying to offer some kind of light on the Hispanic/Latino issue, from the perspective of a Latino American who lives in the US. I know this is a delicate topic and that there are different points of view. Sometimes I don't understand the animosity of people when expressing their opinions (which is not your case.) Instead of offering more information that can educate us all, some sound like personal attacks, which are not conducive to help anyone.

    • @mariaviudez7281
      @mariaviudez7281 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Elio Leturia I most certainly agree. I am more than happy to tell people more about my content whenever they ask. Some people do not even realize that there are Africans that are Hispanic, so they ignorantly ask "what part of Latin America are you from?" Or even "How did you learn Spanish?" All very distasteful. I am living in Spain but visit America occasionally and see the animosity that you mentioned. It's very very distasteful how many people don't just sit and listen and think they know everything based on stereotypes. I commend you for your open mind and nice personality, and ability to learn more. 😊😊

    The term "Latino" has became in the US something similar to "Coloured" in South Africa. More than half the Latinos in the U.S. are multiracial. In fact, those Latinos who consider themselves "White" marry more usually to other "Whites" (Latinos or Anglos) and are assimilated more rapidly by the White American majority.

    I loved your video, but I think you missed a point... you said that not all, like to be called hispanic (in Spanish Spoken language countries) because they've been there before Spanish arrived to the continent, and I do agree with that... but... how do we call all those "called Spanish or Latinos..." because they were born in an Spanish or Portuguese spoken country (such as Brazil), but their parents are British, or German, or Swiss, or Russian, or Polish, or Aremnian, or Greek and so on??? They are not Spanish, nor Latinos... what are they...??? In my country there are a lot of those people... I consider myself Latino because I am basically a mixed of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish... even though I don´t know how to call my ancesotrs that were Swiss... or am I really Latino if I have Swiss in my blood? Or am I just predominantely latino? Are you still latino if you are 50% british and 50% Italian??? Or if you are 50% German and 50% Polish but born in Uruguay??? Mmmhhh...

    • @elioleturia
      @elioleturia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comments. I think we all evolve, learn and acquire the values from where we grow. So as an example, if your father is British and your mother German, and you are raised in Uruguay, you most likely will learn Spanish, embrace the local culture, food, music, beliefs. You may or may not speak German or English, or be interested in the culture of your parents. Or you may be heavily influenced by it! There is not a black and white answer; cases are different. Thanks for contributing to the discussion in a constructive way. Some of the comments that come from people who seem to like to argue instead of explaining their disagreements in a constructive way. But at least the video provokes a space for discussion.

    • @lauruguayitausa
      @lauruguayitausa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is a very interesting subject, and I like to discuss about it in a educated manner. My problem is based on the fact that people born in Uruguay, just because the official language is Spanish, are considered Hispanic. But people born in the United States, just because they adopt the language and the culture they are not considered "anglo"... do you understand my point?
      Uruguay, Argentina and Southern Brazil, like USA, are countries made of immigrants, mostly European, and even though there is a large community of Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and French, many of them, are not originally of "latin countries". So I don´t think they should be call latino... I give you an example, I have a friend who was born in Argentina, both of her parents are German, she married an American guy in Argentina, they moved to Uruguay where their daughter was born... So, what is she? Latino just because she was born in Uruguay and her mom in Argentina? She grew up a few years there, but she has been living in the States for many years and speaks both languages...
      The other issue I have about this subject (well I have others too) is that part of Canada, speaks French, a latino language, why they are not considered latinos????
      And I do not understand why Americans separate themselves in such an erratic way in the census... European descendents are plain "whte"... while African descendents are "African American" not blac...and people born in countries where Spanish is spoken are called "latinos or hispanics" except for Portugese or Spaniards where the real latino people live... they are considered white... as well as Italian, French and Rumenian... all latino cultures...just because they are located in Europe???But Uruguay where 90% of the population is of European descendentis is not considered white? Just because we are located in South America? It is ironic, but even though our population is very small, in percents, we have the highest quantity of white people (or European descendent if you prefer...) while USA has around 60%... Isn´t that ironic that those one who were born in Uruguay but become American citizens are not considered white when our ancestors are as European as American ancestors???? But latino, the same as Mexican where there ancestors are mostly Amerindian??? They are not latinos either... nor hispanics... Mestizos have some Hispanic, not the natives...
      And last... but not least what is a latino culture? Mexico food for example, it is totally different than Uruguayan food... in other words, the so "called" latino countries do not even share a culture... and the language... let me tell you that it is pretty different too... the accent, the meaning of many words, and the use... Again... Americans do not call themselves or Australian Anglo, just because they share a language... Why should our countries have a distinctive name when we are so different in all the aspects??? Sorry for writing a lot... but this is a big subject... with lots of point that do not make sense for me...
      One more thing... people who sees me, think I am Polish, or Russian when I say (and I do it on purpose) that I am Latino, some of them, do not believe me!!! Funny, right???

      Hahahaha go the school sister because you are so confused, Latino refers to the people who speaks a a latin language remember latino is not a race and is for that reason the latins are in all colors and hispanic does not refer to the race but to the people whose the language is spanish, I'm mexican and although I'm mestizo but I'm white and I don't have anything to do with the brown mexicans so a latin could be a white descendant of germas, irish, russian etc. or a latin descendant of chinese, japanese, lebanese etc. in my country there is a huge lebanese colony and those guys are latins and hispanics for the simple reason of speaking a latin language.

    • @covfefe_drumpfh
      @covfefe_drumpfh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Half white" (or "half __ ethnicity") is a misnomer. As a Latino/a, you just can't be "half" any ethnicity since most latinos are already combined with several ethnicities. For example, I'm Puerto Rican but if I were to use the gringo logic of using "I'm X % of X ethnicity", i can say with certainty (per 23andme) that I'm 75% white, 14% Amerindian, 7% African and 4% Arab. See where is the logic in saying someone is "half-X ethnicity"? When it comes to people who are already way too mixed, it just goes off the board.

    is not a culture (you would think Hispanic, if you'd try to find a common cultural trait), and it is definitely not a the language spoken by those called Latinos, who, with the exception of Brazilians who speak Portuguese, speak their own version of Castilian/Spanish. So what the hell does the word Latin mean in the modern World? The only known thing I can find that is associated to the word is a now dead language spoken by the ancient
    Romans.
    Latino?...

Hispanics are from spain and latinos are Italy, spain, Portugal, france ann even Romania is a latino country. most of population in wich today is so called Latin America, are MESTIZOS (mixture of native americans, Europeans and some cases black as well). that's the right ethnicity for that people. of course we still have whites and as in my case, im mexican but im black my ancestors came from africa to Mexico over 500 years ago so, in no way im latino. the fact that part of our roots are from spain and that we speak Spanish, does not makes us Hispanics nor Latinos.

    I am a descendant of Antonio López de Santa Anna, in a small fraction. Burt by other way....
    And I have 50% European, 20% Jewish, 5% indigenous, 17% African and 8% Asian. So you should know that 80% of Mexicans are a mixture of many humanities who emigrated to Mexico and that means being Mexican. If in the United States, the white people, people of color, Asian people and indigenous people mix with each other until they create a single humanity, I bet you will look like us. The Spaniards brought many Human Resources to live to the New Spain (Mexico) We never were a Colony, we were a Viceroyalty. we were Spaniards of America.

    Nice video, but you should be more careful in you classification. Especially when you use the "Latino / Latina" description to define someone. Many of the people who appear in this video are not "Latinos". You can say that many of them are son's of Latinos and that they where born in U.S.A. Or, they have Latinos parents. But many of them are born in U.S, have Latinos parents, and they don't even speak a romance language.
    You are only "Latino / Latina", when you where born in an official Latin-speak country or region, and of course, you speak a romance language like Spanish for example, or Portuguese, Italian, French, there are many other's.
    Even if your father and mother are "Latinos", and you speak perfect Spanish (example), or Spanish AND English (bilingual), but you where born in Great British or U.S.A. You are not "Latino" anymore, because in your country of birth is officially spoken English. You can always say that you are of Latin descent in this particular case (it would be the correct term). Sorry if you thik otherwise.
    And please, always confirms the information before publishing.Christina Aguilera don't speak spanish or another romance languge. So, she's NOT Latina at all.
    Benjamin Bratt was born in U.S.A (San Francisco). He's NOT Latino.
    Lynda Carter was born in U.S.A (Phoenix, Arizona). She's NOT Latina.
    Rosario Dawson was born in U.S.A (New York City). She's NOT Latina.
    Cameron Diaz was born in U.S.A (San Diego, California). She's NOT Latina.
    America Ferrera was born in U.S.A (Los Angeles, California). She's NOT Latina.
    Dolores Huerta was born in U.S.A (Dawson, New Mexico). She's NOT Latina.
    Eva Mendes was born in U.S.A (Miami, Florida). She's NOT Latina.
    Soledad O'Brien was born in U.S.A (St. James, New York). She's NOT Latina.
    Rosie Perez was born in U.S.A (Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City, New York). She's NOT Latina.
    Zoe Saldaña was born in U.S.A (Passaic, New Jersey). She's NOT Latina.
    Jimmy Smits was born in U.S.A (Brooklyn, New York). He's NOT Latino.
    Christy Turlington was born in U.S.A (Walnut Creek, California). She's NOT Latina.
    Dara Torres was born in U.S.A (Los Angeles, California). She's NOT Latina.
    Raquel Welch was born in U.S.A (Chicago, Illinois). She's NOT Latina.

      I am not going to argue who is Latino or who is not, but I hope you got the point of the video which is show that Latino is not a race and that Latinos can be of any race, said that, some of this people might have been born in the US, but that doesn't mean they can't be used as models to show what Latinos look like, just imaging a kid of Norwegian parents being born in Japan, he is not "legally Norwegian" but you can perfectly say, this is what a Norwegian looks like, because a sheet of paper (birth certificate) does not change your appearance/phenotype.

    • @pepe007jen6
      @pepe007jen6 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I perfectly understand the example of the video, because i'm "Latino" (born in Latin America). We (Latinos) know exactly that Latino is not a race and hispanic is not a race neither. Some people, "especially in the United States", use it to mean that, yes, but it's inaccurate. The label "Latino" is about a geographical origin (when we are trying to specify a Romance language) and culture, and not just about appearance. But it's just a little tendentious to false expectations ("according to my opinion"), to use "some of this people that have been born in the US" (15 of 32 is not "some" for me).
      And I'm just saying that, it could be done and explain better in a video, without putting fake Latin models, or using some famous people that have been born in the US. "Remember", you are Latino and "ONLY" if you where born in Latin America (in this particular case). Please, understand the difference. But I'm not trying to degrade in any way the effort of who made the video. If I could make a suggestion, it would be that the sources of information need to be checked before publishing. That's all.

    • @gosick442

      Pepe007JEN Some of these people were not only born in the U.S. They're actually half white or anglo, whichever term you want to use. Even if they were just born in U.S. I would still consider them full Cuban, Mexican, or whatever, but many of them have one parent that is U. S. white.

      Thanks for the effort to point out where these individuals were born. Again, the place where a person is born does not make them Latinos. It's the cultural upbringing, customs, influenced by religion and language. I am only trying to offer a perspective. There are Latinos who choose not to speak Spanish, or to adhere to certain customs. It's their prerogative. And if we disagree, that's fine!

Dominicans are not really hispanics because they are African, Black puerto ricans and Cubans as not hispanic either. Indian Mexican are not hispanics because they do not have Spanish european mixed, they are Indians. Being colombian or Venezuelan is just like calling someone American you are not specifying race. So Raul Julia is Puerto rican but for his looks more likely he has Spanish blood. Maduro is Venezuelan but looks mixed. Christina Saralegui looks 100:percent Spanish and Zoe Saldana or Rosario Dawson are African because their family ancestry do not come from Spain.

IF U LIVE N FRANCE U WOULD KNOW that most french people don t consider themselves latin, never call themselves latin. IF u insist or argue some french ppl will smile embarrassingly or smirk & grimace. Some french ppl will give u long explanations why they r NOT REALLY LATIN..
    Its rare to hear a french person call himself latino spontaneously AND with any pride.Actually i ve never heard it. IN MODERN FRENCH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE, "LATIN" PPL CONNOTES PPL OF SOUTH
    & CENTRAL AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN who speak some type of spanish.(& portugese.)....IN FRANCE THE FRENCH R FRENCH & THE LATINS R... SOMETHING ELS WHATEVER THEY DECIDE. I M JUST A MESSENGER.

      Where were you born?? Latin is just a term that says you were born in latin region not a race. And french does derives from latin. Just a note.
      If you were born in france. Then your not a latin America. If you were born in latin america than that makes you someone born in the region of latin descent speaking language.
      This is the problem that the majority always significe the whole integrity of a group of people. When the minority feels left out they cant accept they are part of the group.

    3:21 you can't be "Puerto Rican-American"!!!!!
    If you're Puerto Rican, YOU ARE ALSO AMERICAN BY DEFAULT. All Puerto Ricans are Americans. "Puerto Rican-American" doesn't exist.

      Thank you so very much for the clarification. What I meant was when one parent is from Puerto Rico and the other isn't. But as you can see this is a very complex issue with so many interpretations, and definitions. The time you put to contribute to the discussion with your knowledge is appreciated.

    • @covfefe_drumpfh
      @covfefe_drumpfh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elioleturia it really isn't. A person born in PR is just as American as someone born in any of the actual 50 states: they have the same exact passport. Barring the complicated PR-USA relationship (which could be a discussion for a different day), any time a Puerto Rican touches any of the 50 states and attains residence in any of them, they aren't any different from any other natural born resident from whenever state they're living. There aren't "many interpretations" about this, so don't make this seem something it isn't.
