Watt is so loved in Houston that he can live here for the rest of his life and not have to spend a single dime. I'm not kidding, we love him and everything he did for our city, even my friends who have no clue about the NFL know him and appreciate him. He's straight up royalty in this city tbh and I love that he has mutual love for the team and the city.
Even when he was the enemy on the opposite side of the team, I will always respect JJ Watt. And I will always remember him for his role on the Houston, hurricane relief efforts
People forget his rookie year, when 3 little kids lost their parents and were all hospitalized after an accident. JJ told his people to go take care of their bills while he also visited them and let them know they were not alone. He just said that he heard their story and being new in Houston, he could empathize with being alone. Also swore everyone to secrecy. If a hospital employee hadn't blabbed, no one would have ever known.
Houston Texans fan here - this man was huge impact against any team. Requiring double teams, TE's to block, taking so much attention to one side no matter what side he lined up on. I forever and always will say that he deserved MVP!
Houston Fan here! JJ Watt is the one dude I can think of that signs a $100,000,000 contract and no one thinks that it was an over pay. Saying he is beloved in Houston is a major understatement. On the field and more importantly off the field, he was the absolute best
I moved to Houston a month after hurricane Harvey and lived there til 2020.. I was expecting absolute destruction but they came together and recovered faster and stronger than I ever could have imagined and the biggest contributor to that was JJ Watt and let me tell you that city absolutely loves JJ Watt.. JJ was so loved in Houston he was Houston.. at any given time anywhere in Houston you’ll look and see at least 1 person wearing a 99 jersey.. the city had some of the most spirit for all of their sports teams of any city I’ve ever been too and the people are great and so hospitable..
I am confident that there are a few qbs and offensive coordinators who were very happy with his announcement of retirement. I imaged getting hit by him and all I can think of was a quick and very painful trip to the emergency room. The man was a beast. HOF first ballot for sure.
If his body didn’t start giving out on him, he’d probably be a top 3-4 defensive player ever. 3 defensive poy awards is crazy and that was just the start of his career.
Even though he slowed down a lot and became injured, he still always got double teamed making a pretty damn big impact on the game. I feel bad he got non-stop injuries, but I'm glad I got to witness him. Great player, great human being.
Man, the image at 1:46 took me back. I met JJ Watt at some private event by an oilfield company in Midland, Texas in 2012. We had a chance to ask him some questions so I asked why he wore 99. He said it was because he wore 9 in high school, and when he wasn't able to wear that number anymore, he decided to double it up and go with 99. It was a much more interesting answer than I expected honestly, I thought it was just because it was the biggest number but apparently there was more to it than that. This may not be the most interesting fact in the world but it's a special one to me.
JJ is who you want kids to pick as a role model. Works hard, gives it his all, and never gave up. Both on and off the field he was a positive impact for many. Stand up guy.
His last few years he was hindered by Injuries but he was well on his way to HOF and I do believe his outstanding work for his community is what set him apart
To anyone doubting JJ Watt, beyond all the sacks, go look at the all time TFL in a season leaders. JJ has like 4 of top 5 ALL TIME. Dude was setting records for sacks, tfl, and on top of that was batting and intercepting balls. What a game wrecker. 😊
@@dafuzzbear7711 Problem would have been the salary cap, cause there is no way JJ Watt would have taken a pay cut to just play with his siblings. Considering the reason JJ retired was partially due to health concerns, and partially due to his newborn child, unless the Steelers can match Watt's contract demands, there is no way he is coming to Pittsburgh on the cheap (Steelers also only had $11M of free cap space, Watt's contract with the Cardinals was $14M on average).
I remember watching the first game he came back after wearing that club. When he got his first sack he hopped up and start opening and shutting that hand like a claw at the camera. Everyone in the room and the crowd went wild for that lmaoo
As a Texans fan that watched every game I can confidently say JJ was the best player I have ever seen play… I’m not old enough to have seen LT play but JJ was a special player and was robbed of an MVP award.

JJ Watt is a dominant defensive lineman in the NFL who has been in the league for a long time. He’s a future hall of famer at that. He was big and strong athletic player who never won a Super Bowl.
He was the most beloved player in Houston besides Andre Johnson who also played for the Texans. I hope the Texans will retire his number someday. He retired at the top of his game as a result of being so good at his position.
As a Texan fan he was fun to watch I still have his jersey in my closet in mint condition. Just wish we had better coaches back then he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame 🤘🏼🏈💯. Not only he help during hurricane Harvey he paid for someone funeral expenses
To be fair, offensive tackle is a lot closer to d-lineman than tight end. He easily could have asked to play the position at his original school and see what the coaches say, considering he is a physical freak of nature, I'm sure they would have considered it
In my mind watts 2014 season will go down as the greatest season a non QB has ever had, it was the most deserving of the MVP award that any defensive player ever achieved. Had a Hall of Fame career and one of the biggest what ifs, had he not been riddled with injuries he might have given Bruce Smith a run for his sack record.
His injuries were such a shame because in terms of peak performance he is right up there with Reggie white and Aaron Donald as the greatest defensive linemen to ever play

Definitely should have won MVP. When the race is one defensive player and a qb. They should have picked the defensive player for the fan candy
I think they should’ve too. He deserved it. Plus it would’ve cemented his legacy as the best or easy top 5 defensive players ever
YES. Dude was unreal.
Defenders who wreck games are far more valuable than offensive players who control a game. Watt deserved it over Fraudgers.
