After Jimin runs on the other members' backs, that voice in the background is Jimin's. In performances, he hits those notes live right after being sideways in the air like that. And extra brownie points for the maknae being the one who picks up Jimin and runs across the stage with him! Guess Jungkook was always crazy strong!

I love them all trying to look tough too! Adorable. Especially Jin. They told him his "persona" was gonna be the cold, tough guy because of his extreme good looks, but he's such a goofball that he couldn't keep it up. So they were like..." just be yourself." Thank God.

it is a very different BTS in this song. they were babies here, albeit guy-liner wearing hiphop babies :)))))
BTS did debut as a hiphop group and gradually grew into their own sound and music. this was actually my first BTS song and it happened to be one that we had to learn the choreography to for kpop dance class.
and YES. jungkook rapped in their early days. JK is the golden maknae afterall :))))) i want rapper!JK to come back hahahahaha. BTS during their debut era are more hard core and more intense and passionate (tho the passion didn't really let up in the succeeding years, just... showed itself in a different way) and they really wanted to take on the world and prove themselves. and they did. several times over.
you guys should watch We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2 next. it's a follow up of their debut track. and the rest of their older tracks like I Like It, Blanket Kick, Just One Day, Danger, Let Me Know, Autumn Leaves, Tomorrow, etc.

I think you’d enjoy this 2014 performance of “Jump.” th-cam.com/video/B_TFT7nHW6U/w-d-xo.html. There’s a part where RM yells V, who comes out and sings his part and now, whenever someone yells V, the other guys start singing V’s part. There is a more recent version of this song but you should see this one first. There aren’t subtitles on this video. But it’s such an energetic song. And they really look young here, esp. JK and Jimin.

JK did more rapping in the early days.
They were babies. Jimin's chipmunk cheeks, Jk's baby face. Jin with eyeliner. While RM's hair isn't too bad here, they did some bad styles for him sometimes. But it is still a good song and a bop!
Funny you should talk about baby animals, because they've always reminded me of kittens when they are just learning to fight. Stubby tails and arched spines all puffy, stiff-legged, sideways hop hop hop, grr grr grr!
I also enjoy the ineffectual destruction in this video - how they are using rubbery traffic cones and small sticks that bounce back to beat on impervious objects.
It was high time you met young Hiphop BTS. Jungkook did a lot more rapping those days (only 15 yo at the time), there are lots of other songs where you can hear him rap. He usually has this real fast but chill and a bit hoarse vibe to it. I too wish he would do that again. Told him so on insta, but I doubt he'll listen 🤣 Also RM going by Rap Monster at the time, famous for his mohawk. Jimin being the naughty badboy, V the goofy one. If you haven't allready you should watch Danger, We are Bulletproof and War of hormone.
OMG Caitlin I get you, Baby Bangtan are so badass and cool with their lyrics and message, really, when you think about it.
Those of us that are seeing this years later and first saw them as adults can't help but find them cute in their tough guy hip hop beginnings. RM and Suga look the part because they were underground rappers before debuting with BTS but awww at the rest of the members, especially baby JK.
Whenever I watch baby BTS I want to pat their heads and give them cookies but that's mostly because I am old enough to be their mom, lol.
LOL they started out as a hip hop group, so that's why their concept was like this - you have to remember the first members all came out of the underground rap/dance scene! It took them a little while to realize that their niche/style was really in a different direction but MAN is there a lot of amazing Baby Bangtan Eyeliner content out there. The Bangtan Bombs from this era are GOLD. Super recommend you guys watch the Rise of Bangtan series to help you have more context around the content, because their journey has been fascinating and if you're really getting into them that series will help you track the whole thing without having to go back and find every individual clip from the past yourself! Also the comment about cute baby animals is 💯 🤣
Ah, baby BTS! So fluffy! Pretty sure you could put all their chains and accessories in a pile and it'd weigh more than any one of the members. Fun fact: Jin drove the bus because he was the only one with a license! I think it's amazing that even though their concept has changed and evolved, they were singing about real issues and asking hard questions right from the start and that's never faltered. Fans can debate all they want about what musical styles they like best but there's no denying that the heart of what makes BTS themselves doesn't ever change.

Your comment about the upright bass made me remember that pdogg was a classically trained musician at university even though he's a huge hip hop head. I wonder if that training contributed to some of the more "unusual" instruments in bts songs you don't usually find in hip hop music

They really debuted with a lot of force. They had a great spirit, a lot of talent and a great message.
This song is a criticism of the Korean educational system and even of society, since the place you occupy in the school ranking is very important there, their school hours end and they must go to continue studying until night to pass with good grades. test that will allow them to enter a good university.
The destiny of each boy or girl is almost defined by what the parents want them to be.
At this time most of the boys were also students. In the song they ask what is your dream? They point out that young people are satisfied with the future that they have marked out for them, so they invite them to take control of their lives and work to make their dreams come true.

Even they cringe at their earliest performance 😂 trying hard to be cool and all. You should definitely explore more of their earlier songs as I had the same reaction as you have. As mentioned Rise of Bangtan series is also very informative about their journey as a whole. It isn't called a rabbit hole for no reason. 💜
Bang PD's original vision for BTS was as a hip hop group--hence the name Bangtan Sonyeondan, "Bulletproof Boyscouts", and RM and Suga had a background in underground rap. When J-Hope joined, he spent a lot of time learning to rap like RM & Suga. They did the American Hustle Life reality show in LA in 2014, where they got to meet and work with some rap legends (and were subjected to some rather harsh treatment, which was hard for me to watch happen to my babies!!)
They moved from songs about teenage rebellion in 2013 to songs about high school love in 2014; and in 2015 their breakthrough song "I Need U" heralded their transition into a much softer and more honest image. I credit Bang SiHyuk with the wise decision to change their image, and his willingness to allow them to evolve over time.
But I love their early stuff as much as their new stuff. They were always incredibly hard-working, talented, and well-produced. It's all part of their story and journey, and I love that they started with hip-hop and then transformed it into something even a 65-year-old grandma (me) can love!!

THEY DIDN'T DO IT TO BECOME FAMOUS. THEY WERE ORIGINALLY A HIP-HOP GROUP. That's what most people assumed they were doing just get famous. The whole idea of this song is about kids do not have dreams. Kids just follow whatever their parents told them to do. Like robot. This song is about thinking for yourself not following others.

The upright bass was used more in 80s and 90s hip hop, which influenced this song (and a lot of other BTS hip hop songs) ☺️

Baby Bangtan are so cute! You of course have to watch all the baby Bangtan MVs, but beyond that, Let Me Know is still one of my all-time favs. It's a mellower b-side from their 4th album in Aug 2014 called Dark & Wild, no MV, but there are great live options. Standouts are their seated performance on a show called A Song For You or a concert performance from tour. And if you want to see more baby Bangtan in general, the whole 45-min episode of A Song For You might be something fun for your patreon; it's interviews, games, etc.

I just love watching people's reaction to 2013 BTS. It's always hilarious but Caitlin's description was possibly the best I've heard to date. 😂 And yes, we highly suspect that Jin is a vampire - especially since he's even allergic to garlic. 😅

just so you guys know, some of the visuals were determined by the company and the members did not like it, but they did it anyway
like hobi's mask, he couldn't breath properly with it, and joon's sunglasses too, they asked the company to not wear those but they said no lol
also, bighit assigned them "roles" like you usually see in a boy band and jin was supposed to be the quiet cold bad boy, meanwhile jimin was like the hot guy with abs
both of these roles didn't fit them and put pressure on them, so they didn't like it, but they managed to outgrow these and become who they genuinely are now :)
that's why you'll see Jin be more quiet at first (also because he was a lot more shy in the beginning too, he said that it was during fire that he got his confidence and became how he's now)
the song really slaps though, they didn't have their style, but the talent was from the start!

Its always a very weird experience for me watching people react to NO more dream.
Like it gives me so much second hand embarrassment to see their style, but at the same time the music they made was always fire to begin with.

2:40 Andrew's complete-shock face when little Jungkookie goes off rapping 😂 yeah. I think when they were practising for this song recently he commented about how he had to practice a lot to get that one down again. He does occasionally also replace rappers in performances, if necessary, and in early days used to rap here and there.
3:20 they really were going with a hardcore "true" hiphop concept and style in the beginning. Nowadays they just add some hiphop songs in there among a bunch of other genres, too. Obviously also due to how they were originally selected and pulled together.
4:50 that glasses stunt is one of the standout moments, and got turned into a bunch of gifs and memes, obviously.
5:44 YES!!! and that double-bass then is such a groovie line throughout, i love it, too. It adds to it being a "bop", as you said before 😁

8:50 "to all the youngsters without dreams" yeah, they really came with a purpose and message for that debut, and the intensity in how they portrayed that is fuelled by both the genre and the fact that they all had a thing to say.
9:28 "Suga and RM look the part" yeah! They were also the only experienced performers (in that genre), having done rap by themselves or with their previous groups before for a few years.

oh yeah, they did No More Dream at their MOTS ON:E concert (fall 2020, I believe that's when he made that comment? 🤔), and also a few of their older skool trilogy songs at award shows (Boy In Luv and Bulletproof pt. 2 I remember off the top of my head).
Another recent performance, during the 2021 New Years Eve Live concert Jungkook covered for Yoongi at one point (in "Best of Me"), because Yoongi was still in rehab with his shoulder and could only join the calm performances without any dancing.
This was such a fun reaction. Baby BTS feels special. Compare THIS to Boy with Love or Permission to dance lol. I love their beginnings with that insane hunger and fierce attitude. They have grown and they have done a lot of polishing, but their beginnings are very very close to my heart. That rawness in it is endearing.

What I find amazing - Jimin almost did not make into BTS. But Jimin is the only person on the TH-cam thumbnail of the very first mv for BTS. The live performance of this at MAMA 2019 is a must watch.

the whole concept and message of their group and bang pd (the company's boss and the boys close friend/bro now) even mentioned, was not about being famous or popular, its to create this group who is genuine with their lyrics, style and story! they weren't just doing it to look "tough" rather its because they have backgrounds themselves in hiphop and rap (RM & SUGA for example who were underground rappers/creators) therefore with that background and history this is the style that felt most appropriate back then!

JK is from september 97, the song is from June 2013, so JK was still 15 Global Age. Korean age changes with the new year, and besides that you start as 1 years old when you're born.

Loved your reaction to this Caitlin I loved her saying cute little animals try to be tough, and your reaction to JK rapping. I will admit when I first saw this video back in 2013 I kept thinking to myself why are these little boys trying to act so tough! I just couldn't see it :) I had just gotten into kpop 2012/2013 so I was still learning about everything when they debut! It wasn't until after N.O (which the they also have a part in it that I questioned :)) that came out in September 2013 that I really started to get into them. It was the song Attack on Bangtan (Rise of Bangtan) that got me hook line and sinker! I had to figure out who everyone was, what there names where and went down the rabbit hole! I would recommend older videos We are Bullet Proof, NO, Danger, War of Harmon. I love attack of Bangtan but there is only dance video's and comeback stage videos for it, and I love love love the song Let Me know which also doesn't have a video but it is a softer song but one of my favorites!
