      Exactly, he has Jokic like IQ, it’s just that for the moment, the system around him, the players around him and also him still making bad shots decisions makes them difficult to see
      But he has a crazy high iq at his age and I even argue that is his best skill yet in his game

Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu, Tony Parker, Popovich, all the Spurs legends are mentoring him and supporting him in every way they can. Tim Duncan's mentorship particularly is something I'm excited about. He was quiet but absolutely a top tier competitor, winner and classy player. The defensive lessons, the pressure of playoff basketball (When my Spurs actually get some competent teammates for him), blocking out the noise from media and other players, the value of being a great teammate and leader, how to handle the pressure being a highly sought after #1 overall pick, all things that Tim Duncan knows firsthand and that Wemby would benefit immensely from learning.

    They're both awesome but to me Wemby is clearly ROY and I don't really understand how this is close.
    The award is for rookie of the year, not "most efficient rookie on a winning team". Wemby gets the superstar treatment from opposing defenses and still gets better numbers than Chet on lower minutes. He is the story of his franchise while Chet is the 3rd option of his. OKC is SGA's team and SGA is the one name way up on the opponent's gameplan. Wemby also steps up to the plate when an opposing superstar comes to town and the lights shine brightest. The game he played against Giannis was him saying "I am the star of this rookie class" to me.
    Chet is a wonderful player, but he's just a piece. Wemby is San Antonio. They'll go as far as he goes one day while I'm not sure Chet will ever be the 1st option. He is clearly the face of this rookie class, which Chet is not even really a part of -he has had a whole year to adapt behind the scenes while Wemby is doing it before our very eyes. He is the rookie of the year. Chet is the best rookie on a winning team. But he's neither better nor more important than Wemby.

      Last night OKC lost and Chet had a very quiet night. Even in losses, Wemby is anything but quiet. That's because he means everything to San Antonio. All of their stuff runs through him, as it should. And all of the opponent's attention is on him. For a guy who is younger and on a minutes restriction, that speaks volumes as to why he is ROY imo. That's about your ego, he's more concerned about doing his damn job when anyone attacks the rim. I’m team Wemby as a Spurs fan but I LOVE Chet’s intensity and how he isn’t flopping all over the floor. Chet doesn’t back down from Wemby or anyone else and contests at the rim as well as any center ever has. His biggest advantage tho is his teams IQ and skill as he is free to play 1v1 against any team. The Thunder are really good. This team is a championship contending quality team. As of right now Chet is more developed and you can see his year in college and year injured in OKC has really helped his IQ. Wemby isn’t as polished but he is far more skilled and has a higher basketball IQnaturally. What I really like is that they both are competitors and want to win by beating each other. I hope to see more of this and hope the LeBron/KD super team era is at an end.

    Something that is overlooked is how unique a situation this is for both players. They're both unicorns, and the odds of them being in exactly the same stage of their career at the same time is astronomical. In terms of them having a rivalry, if either one wasn't in the league, who would there be for them to compare themselves to in real time? KP?
    I can't see there being the same level of drive and motivation for either player if they didn't have a situation where the ONLY real rivalry prospect for either play just happens to be playing at the same time, the same age, and honestly to the same level. IMO this can only bring out the absolute best for both of them, playing against each other, sharing something absolutely unique, and driving each other to grow as much as possible, as either only hated enemies or close friends can in competition. MJ's the GOAT in some respects due to the fact that he made everyone his bitter enemy on the court, helping to drive himself throughout his entire career.
    Here's hoping that these two lads stay healthy, drive each other to unbelievable heights in competition, and give us all the most amazing next two decades of basketball we've ever seen.

      Most analysts focus on usage and iso possessions (ball in hand) and one on one feats such as blocks, which look great for Wenby. The reality is that so far Chet has had higher efficiency and a bigger impact on winning as measured by nearly all advanced metrics (after controlling for who else is on the floor). The advanced metrics aren't close. But, we are only at the midway point for the season and Wenby has been improving quickly. Wenby has the higher long run upside, but I also feel that most folks don't truly appreciate the impact of Chet. His defensive positioning and versatility is superb for a rookie and his gravity creates space and cutting lanes. As great as SGA has been, the one big roster change between the 0.488 team and current .771 team is Chet.

  • @particularlee
    @particularlee 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    there is one argument where Chet has more 'win shares' than Wemby, where just by adding him they have gone from play-in team to best record in the west. but i feel like Chet also benefits from the lowkey INCREDIBLE improvement not just SGA has shown this season but also Jalen Williams. SGA has obviously elevated himself into a frontrunner in the MVP conversation, but I feel Jalen Williams is also a frontrunner for MIP behind Tyrese Maxey. The guy is playing like an all star at times esp with clutch buckets - super underrated because he is buried behind Shai and Chet in these conversations. I argue Chet is not the clear cut 2nd best player on OKC behind Shai either, so against this line up, who do you load up your defense on? You can't really because there that many weapons. Meanwhile wemby has faced triple and at times quadruple teams and his open teammates continue to brick open shots

Chet has +55, while being on the best team in the West and playing 3 more games, Wemby has 50 while on the worst team in the West and playing 3 less games. Wemby has a better plus minus per game. Youre right with the turnovers tho. He has averaged more turnovers, but also more points, assists, blocks, steals, rebounds, double his offensive rebounds and a better plus minus per game. They would naturally probably add 20 pounds of weight just by continuing to grow up and fully mature into their bodies. But by carefully planned bone-density-building and muscle-building exercise regimens they can add a lot of strength and explosiveness and weight without adding a lot of bulk. As interesting it is to note Wemby's IQ, Spurs trust his acumen to run the offense through him. So with all those reps he's going to be aware where his teammates at least should be given the situation. Just like in 2:45 where Wemby defends the close out on a smaller shooter then starts booking it to the other side. Because when a teammate gets the defensive rebound, he's already at the other side cross matched in transition with a smaller player! This is how the Sixers get Embiid easy baskets in transition. No knock on Chet's IQ either when he can play make in transition and read/navigate screens on defense well for his age. Since his shooting is instrumental for the Thunder's ability to space.
