    Back in the day we had our ears to the rail when “Old and in the Way” came out. It seemed like a natural extension from Grateful Dead, N.R.P.S. etc. It changed my life! So glad to hear about this exhibit!

    Wow. What a lineup of musicians paying tribute to Jerry. Jerry played Banjo, Gtr and pedal steel. All just as great as his Gtr playing and deeply influenced by bluegrass and country. The 3 movies you mentioned are all amazing movies. Festival express was about The Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, and The flying burrito brothers.. I believe Buddy Guy as well...doing a tour around Canada. Such great footage in the movie. Jerry jamming with Janis Joplin and so much more. Grateful Dawg is such a great look into Jerry and David Grisman's musical partnership. Lots of performance footage as well as rare interviews and a behind the scenes look into their friendship and much more. Long strange trip is such an incredible Doc about The Dead. All 3 are so worth watching.

      I was at a bluegrass festival and overheard someone complaining about too many GD fans/songs (jamming). If you took everyone out of the festival that liked the Dead (not even DHs) that festival would die... If any genre of music stops bringing in new blood it's heading for a dead end.

      Same, there’s a bluegrass band called the Rumpke Mountain Boys from the Cincinnati area where I’m from (those familiar will know that rumpke “mountain” is the main landfill for the city) and they refer to their music as Trashgrass. I saw them at a festival playing a couple dead tunes at 9:30AM and I’ve loved bluegrass ever since.

      I respect anyone that is honestly expressing themselves through music regardless of the genre. I wasn't always that way, but the I grew up. Maturity can either keep you stuck, or open whole new worlds of pleasure and appreciation.

    Jerry's history, and love of, bluegrass is legendary for us deadheads. He followed Bill Monroe around for a few years in late 50s early 60s--wanted to be a bluegrass boy in the band. Old and in the Way was best selling all time bluegrass album for 25 years. He played with Tony Rice , Peter Rowan and others. The reason he didnt have more of a career in bluegrass was due to his fame. He realized he (us deadheads) would overwhelm most bluegrass scenes and therefore he just did side projects and played his banjo alot in the shadows. Good banjo and acoustic guitar player that LOVED bluegrass and old time English/Scottish balads. One of the many facets of Garcia, including one where he made a contribution to music history, despite being in a ''rocknroll'' band playing 100 shows a year for 30 years. In later life, Robert Hunter had connections in Nashville--- folks like Jim Lauderdale.

    My bluegrass journey began by catching the South Loomis Quickstep Band in No. California (Mark O'Connor played with'em for a bit in his youth) - not knowing that they were among the early "jam" grass vanguard influenced by Old & In The Way. It might even be true, but I've always loved the story about Vassar Clements, upon arriving by bus with the band in the SF Bay area, "Hey, Jerry, you're on that billboard," a Bill Graham Dead show announcement.

    I love the channel and subscribe, of course. Garcia totally blew me away in the ‘70’s with the old & in the way stuff! All I do now is play worship but it’s starlight vintage Jerry every chance I see an opportunity to throw in Weir/Garcia stuff. It just comes out of me. “Garcia Bluegrass” how cool is that Dude? Thanks Jerry!!! What I would do to see them all like back in the ‘80’s on the East Coast…I gotta do a trip to the museum for sure! Everything in WNC is really blooming’ now!!! Thanks!!!

  • @briandaniels2126
    @briandaniels2126 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I didn't know about the bluegrass museum in Owensburg but I do know that a lot of Jerry's guitar playing style was heavily influenced by his banjo playing from him being a huge bluegrass fan.I've always thought that fact about Jerry's playing was one pf thr factors that contributed a lot to what a lot of music fans didn't "get" about The Grateful Dead.When you consider that The GD took bluegrass,rock,funk,reggae,outlaw country,jazz and blues vombined with a very healthy dose of improvisation and then smashed it all together to make their own sound it's easy to over look just one part of that sound which is the bluegrass part but the bluegrass in the sound was a really major influence because The GD was ultimately Jerry's baby.Jerry was also a huge fan of Clarence and Roland White,Hank Williams sr,Bill Monroe and many others which heavily informed his guitar playing and The GD.Thanks for the great video and info about Jerry being in The Bluegrass Hall of Fame.🙂

    Maybe Garcia's most prominent contribution to bluegrass was to slow it down. What Peter Cooper called 'Slow Poke Bluegrass.' 😂That's not a knock. Most modern BG'ers seem intent on out speeding each other. That gets tiresome after a while. I think I'll take a ride to see this exhibit. Thanks Otis!

I'm a deadhead since I was a kid and come from a family of mandolin players including my dad my dad who used to take me to see Dave Grisman. I've been a blue grass fan since I was a kid as well. Coincidentally, I'm working with a bunch of rental backline tomorrow in Imokalee, Florida at a bluegrass Festival with leftover salmon and railroad Earth and Rhonda Vincent and a bunch of other acts. I'm going to talk to the leftover salmon guys about this event. See what they have to say. Thanks so much for posting this.

    When Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead played 69' (I was 13) there was a rock concert called "BULLFROG" in my little town of St.helens Oregon. I rode my Stingray Bike 6 miles to chk it out ... they wouldn't let me in, but I saw & listened from the county rd. There's quite a story about it. Just Google Bullfrog St. Helens..... great to hear from you Otis, Small Town Saturday Night has been stuck in my brain for 2 days 🎵 🎶 🎵 Paul DeShazer was on the board of commishiners, tried to stop it, whose sons (yrs later) formed the punk band The Styphnoids my mom's a fake and my dad's a failure

    Hey Otis, great one. Hope you and yours are doing well. REDBUD comment: A 90 year old friend who drives to Texas from CA once a year happened to mention in a text the beauty of the countryside now that they're in bloom. Thought I'd mention we had a little snow here in Coarsegold, CA. Snow in April. Very unusual. Also experiencing record lows - 25 yesterday, so especially enjoyed my cup of Joe with you today. Take care. Love to all.

    Live 20 miles SW from Elizabethtown, towards Bill Monroe's homeplace. Haven't been to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, sounds like it would be a good time to go. Where the redbuds grow.

    Morning Otis, as I get older, I wish I had a Transporter like in Star Trek. I would be at The Garcia Bluegrass exhibit, out to the 5spot, over to Seymour to catch a show! My Wisteria is looking Good! Rosebud.... went for a Citizen Kane reference instead. Have a great weekend!

    Hi Otis! Yes I had heard about the bluegrass exhibit. Big Steve (Steve Parish, Jerry's guitar tech & friend for many years) talked about it on his Sirius XM show. He was supposed to go but he couldn't make it because of other pressing west coast commitments (I don't remember what, but he did say.). It sounds awesome. As you probably know, Jerry started as a bluegrass player and continued to play many "side gigs" of all types including bluegrass! He loved playing all types of music and many people miss him very much. I want to go see this exhibit and am thankful it will be there for 2 years!! Hope you can get there to see it also. In the meanwhile you can listen to his music from many sources.... and on youtube too. I love getting up and looking for your weekly chat while I have my coffee. Thanks for all you do. Much love to you too. (And yes, the redbuds already bloomed down here in Texas.... now everything is going nuts blooming. It has already gotten very hot .... especially for April.)

    I grew up in King North Carolina listening to Ralph and Rex McGee play bluegrass, not far from my roots in Appalachia and Doc Watson and Shelby, North Carolina, Deep Gap. You know Tony Rice lived not far from here, the band Alabama actually got their radio debut in my hometown on a little radio station here. I did not start listening to Jerry Garcia until I was about 20 years old, but I think that he and David Grisman are some of the best Bluegrass ever; although my favorite Bluegrass ever is the Johnson Mountain Boys from Washington DC, I love the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan. You know I love the Pizza Tapes and Old and in The Way and Shady Grove. I went to college in Boone, North Carolina, so actually got to hear Old Crow Medicine Show on the street before they were even heard of. Good luck to you on this project Otis. Rhettbutt.
