    I understand why some people prefer to hike ultra light, and I have no issues with that. But for me, the added weight equals added comfort. Also, I don’t have any physical issues or discomfort in carrying 45+ lbs. At the end of the day, backpacking is about enjoying the outdoors, and different people will enjoy it uniquely according to their stamina, strength, and gear preferences. “Hike your own hike”, be safe, and don’t be afraid of challenges. Take care and cheers!

      I use a Trangia 28 for my solo trips, super light and runs on meths or dry gas from the yellow bottle. The burner will run for about a half hour per fill. plenty of time for most of my meals. I love it

      Edward Shin , yes it is a bit excessive but if you can handle it and don't leave a mess then good on you.
      Edited to add, redundant fuel sources is a good thing. I think I would add a small shovel to your kit.

    There is nothing like hanging out in the living room while backpacking. Comfort in the wilderness is awesome. There have been many trips where I witnessed hikers retreating to their sleeping bag because they are miserable. I carry a heavier tent, a chair and a number of extras as well. Dude, while others are miserable you are comfortable with your luxuries in your living room. Bravo.

    5 day backpacking, looks ok to me. I don't get why people think that everyone absolutely must try to go as light as they can. 40 pounds isn't bad if you can carry the weight and be comfortable. If I was going to do a thru-hike, I would choose different gear, but my hiking is usually limited to a few days because I'm neither a trust fund baby, nor unemployed... when you have a career and a family you're limited. So, I get this gear load. A five-day hike for me would be a day getting in, a couple days at a camp doing some fishing, having a whiskey or two with friends or whatnot, then a day to get out. 50-60 pounds isn't a big deal if you're not trying to crush miles.

    I'm with you Edward, I carry what I want, within reason. If you want it and you can carry it, why not? I'm a former infantryman and we walked for miles and miles for days on end carrying 50 to 90 pounds of mostly weapons, ammo, mortar rounds etc. with maybe only a poncho liner and extra socks for comfort. It's pretty awesome now, as a civilian, that I can keep my "Ruck" at a relatively light weight of around 40 to 50 pounds and all of my gear is for my own personal comfort. Sweet! I could still do the ultralight camping with only a poncho liner and a poncho, but why? Camping is supposed to be fun, not miserable. The light Infantry motto, "Travel light, Freeze at night!" Nice video BTW!

      David Schaum thanks David! I'm with you there, brother. the comforts are worth the extra weight! 👊 . great to see people who are not afraid to carry some weight

    • @Spartan117TCF
      @Spartan117TCF 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. Whilst the majority of my camping is kayak based and overall weight for trim on the water is still important, I too subscribe to the 'when I get there I want capabilities and comfort' camp. Great video.

    • @walkerprescott393
      @walkerprescott393 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      David Schaum military equipment is so overbuilt and uses the most durable materials that are not always the lightest, so when you're used to long patrols and hoofing an arsenal around, you breathe a sigh of relief when you find comprible civilian equipment (minus the Gustav) and it's soooooo much lighter and can cary luxury items that make trail life more enjoyable. It makes you laugh when you hear people whine about an extra ounce or two........tell em to grow a set!

    • @KLB5420
      @KLB5420 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edward Shin ... if you're going to use it, it's worth carrying, if not, why carry it? A lot of people go with too much into the backcountry, like with all your fire starting stuff, did you need to use it all? Did you use it all? You seem to go a bit overkill (two sleeping pads, pretty cush for ex-military, I carry two, but one is for my dog). My legs, back, and core can handle the weight, but I'd rather go with less weight and cover more miles while still having time to enjoy the camping experience. I guess you'd have to try it to see. Maybe go as bare bones as you can, and see if you (and your body) enjoy it more.

    • @anonymousbosch9265
      @anonymousbosch9265 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The question of weight is like asking what’s your favorite color and then saying “wrong!” It’s a totally preference issue on how you enjoy your hobby. My dad damn near brings the kitchen sink 30 miles into Quetico provincial park and my load out is 20 pounds because I leave the group by myself to visit the Paleolithic rock painting

    I agree with you, conditioning has more to do with gear weight ratio than anything. I'm a 50yo and have packed between 30-45 lbs with no limitation or reduction in distance traveled. I live at the base of the Olympic National Forest where having extra essentials and safety is a must due to weather and terrain. Cougars are abundant here but dehydration/hypothermia are biggest risk. Thank you for sharing your equipment and best wishes!

    Good loadout. It is not the lightest but not all backpacking is thru hiking. IMHO a little bit more weight adds some comfort and safety especially if you are hiking in isolated areas. I like your CCW also. Not every animal that may bother you has 4 legs. The most common problem is usually the 2 legged type. 👍

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I for one respect your bringing of comforts. I feel like you get a lot of flak in the hiking community for it, but hey, if you can handle it and you enjoy it, then go for it.

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      H0nest Ab3 thanks 👊. The main reason for the flak is that people don’t seem comfortable carrying additional weight. I’m completely fine with it and absolutely love the comforts I get to bring with me, which make the camping experience just that much better. It seems like the only people who truly understand are current or ex military, and/or people who’ve been able to carry the added weight comfortably. Cheers 🍻

  • @Et111thompson
    @Et111thompson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i under stand the added weight for added comfort, its really all about how you like to pack. I like to cover long distances, usually upwards of 18-20 miles a day, so going light is a necessity. Before food, my pack comes out to around 25lbs, less if i don't have to pack for inclement weather.

    Sweet gear load out! The only think I would change out is the stove. You say you don't care if it only lasts a few trips, but what if it breaks down in the middle of a trip? I highly recommend the MSR pocket rocket. Not much more money and you are guaranteed a great product. I think it great to buy cheaper on some things like your portable sink, but it's also good to pay a little extra on things for the peace of mind. Happy trails!

    Nice video, I do a lot of Bushwalks here in Australia and need what I need when out in the bush. I also don't understand why prefer to hike ultra light - I have to have the equipment I need to made sure I can camp, have a good sleeping night, make my meals, have first-aid equipment, etc...I need it. I get told most times that I carry too much - I also think going for a 1 night or 2 night camp is completely different to when your out there for 4, 6, 9+ days or even more.

    I found that , for myself , it's basically the same stuff for just a overnight or a multi-day trip. The only real variable is the amount of food I need to take. Over a lot of years I found that a lighter pack is a nicer pack so the wants stay home and only the needs go. If something is not used on a trip you can bet it stays home on the next one. It's your trip so do it your way and enjoy every minute of it. I go by a old time tested saying ....A ounce in the morning is a pound at night.

    • @Oldsparkey
      @Oldsparkey 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Shin , shedding weigh for longer hikes means you can take more food , YEA . There are a lot more reasons for weight loss. As the years slipped by I wanted a lighter load with each passing year. 5 years ago a triple by-pass helped considerably in appreciating a lighter pack. It made everything lost some weight , myself , my wallet , the pack and all the gear in it.

    Love the video. In the excitement for Spring, I've been binge watching TH-cam videos and a lot of them are UL (which I am not) lol So this video was refreshing. I particularly liked your ideas of buying some things from Amazon. I tend to forget that the option is there for some equipment. Please check other sources of information for their gear breakdowns as well. If you go out with this much gear, you'll find yourself rarely using any of it, and it might make for a miserable trip carrying so much weight. A couple examples is to replace his entire fire kit with a couple mini BIC lighters (one is for backup), saving about a pound of weight with no loss of comfort or functionality.
      I'm not trying to be rude here, but it's hard not to notice that none of his gear has been used to any great extent. I wish the video creator all the fun in the world, but he isn't a good source for camping insights.

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      grawss I’ve used every one of these items except for the medical kit. Please see my 5 day backpacking/car camping trip video for reference. Also, just because you may not use something does not mean you shouldn’t bring it. For example, it’s always a good idea to bring some sort of medical kit ( big or small), in case you get hurt. Some trips require you to hike many miles in to camp without cell service, and even a little bit helps. Peace of mind .

    • @grawss
      @grawss 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Shin Of course you should bring a medical kit, just don't overdo it. I'm talking about how clean all your gear is, as though you haven't put it into heavy practice, and more importantly, how I could replace your entire fire kit with an extra BIC lighter. It even comes with a free source of sparks! There's a pound you don't have to carry around and you lose zero functionality and comfort.

    Goat Rocks Wilderness? In Washington?
    I was thinking about how many of us transition from these heavier loads to going ultralight. I personally have become mildly obsessed with UL. As I was pondering the reason behind the transition I realized it is likely because backpackers aren't as strong as they once were (coming from someone who transitioned from a 25lb+ base weight to a 12lb and losing tons of muscle mass during that time).
    I commend you for bringing what you want and being comfortable in the backcountry on your own terms. I have gone back and forth about the lightweight camp chair and I'm very jealous of you for going with it.

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Minari Jordan Hi Minari. Thanks for that insight! yes, it is the Goat Rocks Wilderness in Washington, and it certainly is a challenging hike! I appreciate your insightful feedback regarding the weight load.
      I definitely see how a lighter weight load can help in a more pleasant hiking experience. I still do love my camp conveniences and they are worth the extra load to me, but I know as time passes, I can see myself opting for more UL gear (which will probably coincide with me going to the gym less frequently and lifting heavy ;) )
      Thanks for watching and cheers!

    What about vacuum sealed plastic bags. They compress when you pack and use vacuum cleaner to suck out air but still waterproof once vacuum goes. Don't overpack because you will have more bulk on way back. (Same weight, unless wet)

    Back in the day we would be humping a 100-120l Bergen around as normal with all our other gear. I can see why people like UL but having a few extra comforts (providing you have the strength to do the miles) makes it just that bit more enjoyable...besides how can one go UL when you need to carry 4 cans of ale and a flask of brandy (in case the water is bad of course).
    Stick to what you enjoy doing it the way that you want to do it - ignore the pretentious primadonnas!

    Edward, good video, bruh! I'm like Mr. Schaum in that I am retired military and do not have to carry a gas mask, a rifle (optional now), ammo and other heavy military gear. So, it's nice to be able to carry a camp chair and other luxury items if I wish. I do try to be light, around 25 to 30 pounds including H2O and food, primarily due to being the far side of 70. My military legs no longer exist. The objective or mission is to enjoy the outdoors.

      Andrew K it’s about 3x2 inches, and weighs less than 2 ounces. I guess if people want to find something to nitpick over, that would be it. With that said, it is a very useful item if you like to keep clean. Also, aside from the medical kit and bear spray, I’ve used everything In this vid.

      @KruzerOak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KrokemOutdoors My comment was not directly reflecting a particular item, rather the old adage: "you must've packed the whole kitchen sink." For whatever reason, a kitchen sink is often mentioned as a ridiculously heavy backpacking item packed with the justification of comfort.

    A mixed bag of emotions here... Great video, and some of the comments by others were humorous. I cringe when I think about my first backpacking trip. I took more stuff than needed, I also had what I needed. The refinement process comes with experience... You'll also find dropping weight makes the trip far more enjoyable. The gear refinement process also provides a better opportunity to plan and pack for different trips, you definitely have all the toys. I hope you had a blast!

    Nice video; nice load up; that said; 48 pounds!! that is not including water and food I am guessing; when I started backpacking that was what I thought it would be a comfort level weight; then I got swiped away by light gears and kind of remade my load ups in a way that I would be carrying all I wanted to have and be as light as possible; found out that except for the big 3, everything else is relatively not needed; I went Mount Whitney with a 28 pound load up and was not comfortable at all; to get down from Outpost camp I gave my food and my sawyer mini away to a guy that had lost his and was going up; I had the same heavy piece of crap bear can you have there it is like 3 pounds just empty! crazy! I saw people with bear bags even there is requirement to have the can; as a solution I bought the 1 pound lighter alternative bear can for next trip; it is under 2 pounds; still heavy as hell if you ask me but shedding 1 pound here and then makes a difference on the way you enjoy your trip; strong legs or backs or not! the problem is striking a perfect balance of have to have items, comfort items and needed items in such way you have everything you may need but also the lightest you can afford; it is not easy task and it gets expensive really quickly; I have expended just on my own gear way over 8000 in just a year fine tuning my gear and I am not there still; but I am better now than when I started collecting gears for backpacking; that is because I usually do not travel light at all; I want to carry many stuff that I end up not using but I wanted to have them just in case..that is the biggest dilemma a backpacker face! do I need it or can I do without it; after watching many videos of ultralight backpackers and expending a lot of cash I am not even close yet! I got backpacks that are capable of carrying 100 pounds like the Everlestock J79 skycrane and all the accessories and whistles but I am afraid I would never use it!
    The main thing we are always told is to enjoy the outdoor not to stress about the weight you carry but trust me, everyone says it makes a difference that you only learn once you start going lighter!

    When I was younger heavy packs were just the way it was most of the time. Gear was heavier and I packed everything I thought I'd need. Its ok to start out heavy as you get a handle on what you like to have vs what you like to carry. Now, with all of my camera gear that I'm not willing to leave at home my base weight is always high so UL has become an obsession for me to save weight in other areas. IMHO, the fire kit is excessive, the sink could be ditched, the Gloves I totally get (I like grabbing hot things), too many knives (one solid tang and one folding knife has always been plenty for me), I'd trade a saw for a hatchet, but would probably leave them both at home anyway, two spoons are two too many, Chopsticks work really well for both cooking and eating, the bags inside of bags are fine if that's how you roll but my pack has pockets that are great for that sort of thing, there are a ton of things here that wouldn't work for me. BUT! I'm not the one carrying your pack, and in the end mine is ALMOST as heavy as yours with my monster DSLR, a couple of 2.8 Lenses, and filters. Good luck, keep getting out there and get a feel for what you actually need. (also, in place of a chair a square of your eggcrate pad is pretty nice, nature provides all kinds of things to sit against.
