Alysha Clark did not need permission to work hard n find her place in the W.. but it felt like she needed one to truly begin.. and that permission came from vet T.Thompson. Many lives changed forever because Thompson gave us a confident Alysha Clark. Because a confident Alysha Clark wins championships, challenges the status quo, cares for the community.. and MORE! Ah. Women like these...!
TT! If you want to know how to be a great post, Tina can tell you and show you! The Houston Comets were so lucky to have the first pick in the 1997 WNBA college draft and choose Tina Thompson. The league didn't know what Cynthia Cooper would bring to this team and then we get Tina Thompson with the first pick lol, and Swoopes came back after her pregnancy to contribute that 1st year. We had Tammy Jackson - I wish Tina would be asked how much influence Tammy had on her learning the pro game, as good as she already was straight out of college. Tina Thompson, Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes were The Big Three but with Janeth Arcain off the bench (think Alysha Clark) and filling in when anyone was hurt, they became The Big Four. And as Tina said, the fans in Houston were great right off the bat and every game, so excited and loved our girls - I was there as a season ticket holder for the four championships and into the last couple of seasons when the team was disbanded horrifyingly. i never forgave Less Alexander for it. There is a new Houston Rockets owner that actually wants a WNBA team. Fingers crossed. Thank you, TT, for all the memories, I'm a Comets fan forever! You will have your jersey hanging in the rafters one day!
In the interview, Tina said the 2nd, 3rd and 4th championships were all harder than the first. She said the Comets weren't even predicted to make the playoffs that first year. It wasn't easy even the first year, I remember we were close to losing to the Charlotte Sting, big team. Tina stepped up in that one to get us over the top - the playoff was just ONE game - lose and you're out. The Comets beat the New York Liberty (Lobo) and our wonderful point guard, Kim Perrot, said we are going to win because she felt it with the crowd (or to that effect). It seems like the next 3 years, the LA Sparks were always predicted to win it all; they were very athletic and physical (Leslie, Milton, Mabika & others). Digging deep and playing smart with a lot of heart imo got the Comets past the Sparks in the West as their greatest tests and then kept beating the New York Liberty in the Finals (also a very physical team), & a pesky point guard named Becky Hammon. Dig in, Aces, play with heart & smarts! Let's go!
Tina's comments about opponents showing up differently to play defending champions around the 18 minute mark rings home when watching somebody like a Serena Williams. Players would red line against her and on the off chance they succeeded, they would almost ALWAYS lose their next match. Roberta Vinci's career highlight is preventing Serena's Calendar Year Grand Slam. People dont realize she didn't even win the US Open
This was so dope!
Nikki, more interviews! You clearly have a knack for this
Sure enjoyed watching Tina play with the Comets. Very nice interview.
