A song my mom played so often and so well on the piano. Fantastic clarinette. Move over Artie Shaw.

    S-U-P-E-R-B!
When Ted Nash plays clarinet, one might think it’s his only instrument. He plays it SO well.
But there’s a whole lot more to his talent that just that.
    Like saxophones.
    And flutes.
    And piccolos.
    And yes, Grammys.

      No better than Benny sorry..
      Not at all.
Benny Goodman was and still is the master.

Benny Goodman ......Well now.......It would be difficult if not impossible to quantify ‘the’ greatest jazz clarinet player. I’m a clarinet player, so I have some familiarity with the demands of the instrument.
And it is a cruel master.
I don’t think any player I ever heard had more technical skill than Goodman. Some say Artie Shaw, but I don’t think so. Although Shaw could dazzle, too.
So technically, Goodman May indeed be at the top of the heap.
I marvel at so many of his recordings.......like The World is Waiting for The Sunrise (both versions) or any version of Runnin’ Wild. There are no end of ‘mind-blowing’ examples of just how much music he could get his fingers under.
My comment of Mr. Nash was, as you will note was regarding tone only. I prefer it to Goodman’s, as I stated.
And IMHO, Goodman’s tone was no better than Shaw’s or De Franco’s.
if you compare Goodman’s recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto (with the Boston Symphony) with a recording of, say, Sabine Meyer or James Campbell, the difference in tone is marked. Goodman is respectable in that genre but it exposes his less than stellar tone.
For the best tone of any clarinet player I can name, Pete Fountain was head and shoulders above anyone, again IMHO.
But that may have a lot to do with recording quality or the big bore LeBlanc that Pete Fountain played. Big tone. Woody and fat and full.
      Loved Pete Fountain!
And Ken Peplowski has a better tone, again IMHO, than did Benny Goodman. And he’s also a technical marvel.
But as the old lady said when she kissed the cow.......’Every man to his own liking’.
      Best regards from Toronto.

Their voices are different, so will be their sound. Can you just enjoy the music with out comparing... Music is a universal language, but that doesn't mean we have same way of expressing it
