There was no looking back for Hema Malini after the huge success of ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. Such was her box office clout that both Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to pull them out of their bad phases and her powerful presence rewarded them with the successes of ‘Amir Garib’ and ‘Prem Nagar’ respectively.
Hema Malini formed the hottest pair on screen with Dharmendra with whom she has done more than 30 films. A perfect case of ‘Opposites attract’, the graceful South Indian beauty and the macho Punjabi he-man fell in love during the making of ‘Sholay’. She rejected several marriage proposals and defied convention to marry an already married Dharmendra in May 1980. Hema Malini could get away with it without creating any uproar, either in media or public because of her upright image and spotless reputation.
Hema Malini has always been a ‘Director’s actress. While Ramesh Sippy explored her potential in ‘Andaz’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’& ‘Sholay’, Gulzar presented her subtle and sensitive side in ‘Khushboo’, ‘Kinara’, ‘Meera’ and ‘Lekin’. In fact, ‘Meera’ remains one of Hema’s favourite films.
Hema Malini has worn several hats right from a dancer, actress, producer & director to a Magazine editor, Chairperson of NFDC and is now a very successful politician. She looked ravishing in ‘Baghban’ proving to the world that she is a picture of poise and beauty, an ageless wonder. Because age has never looked so pretty on anyone else than the original ‘Dream Girl’ who has lived her life on her own terms.
