    As someone who builds high hp B series for a living, they are not a waste of time. Not hating but gonna go ahead and assume the built motor failure was likely due to that kid tuning your car. Stock motors can make great power but on borrowed time. That being said love what you do John, nothing but love and respect for you.

      Not saying I agree or disagree, but those AFR numbers are appropriate for E85 fuel, and with a BONE STOCK GSR making 500 WHEEL!! Horsepower, he better be running either E85 or methanol to be getting that level of performance and the motor not blowing up. And I don't recall what type of fuel was ever mentioned in this video...
      I learned this all from my tuner, who DEFINITELY knows what he's doing, and has retuned many, many cars that came from shops that didn't know what they were doing. It's hard to find a skilled tuner, but I think even the best wouldn't want to push more than 400-450 whp on pump gas on a stock block vtec B series.

Super easy and cheap to build unless you get into strokers or super high-rpm. But i'ts not "built" until you do cams, the single most effective upgrade.

      No need to throw shade bro. He works hard and he sets goals for himself and does his best to reach them. He's come a long way from when he was at Mercedes and Tesla working full time and doing TH-cam and I wouldn't hesitate to ask him for help and or help him out if he ever asked for it. He documented his whole journey to run a 10 second pass no matter the trials he faced. He kept going and didn't give up and that's the point he's making. It's dope to see the whole process of getting to that 10 second pass like this and I got just as hyped as he did when he finally did it. When the built engine gets going it's gonna be sick! Keep it up John! #earneverything

    My boss has a 650whp eg hatch that literally made passes for like 14 years without a rebuild. It ended up dying because the oil pump pickup gasket blew out and the pickup tube nuts backed off causing the motor to lose oil pressure and spin a rod bearing. Fully sleeved, rod, piston, cam, valve spring, head studs, the whole 9.

    Built motors aren’t a waste of time depending on what you wanna do with the car. But i like how simplicity is the key to reliability which is where a stock motor comes into play. Stock b18b1 with arps and cometic can net you 350 reliably with a very good tune & last you years. If you blow it slap the same motor in and drive it!

    • @warreeeng
      @warreeeng ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This mentality worked 10 years ago when B series motors were plentiful. Now it's expensive to blow one up and keep swapping in stock motors. Better off getting it built right and lasting versus running on borrowed time. I don't think people wanna be paying $1000 for a shortblock in the coming years.

    • @derekmulla
      @derekmulla ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warreeeng there are still plenty of b18b1s readily available out there. Why waste ur time and money building some crazy motor that will be overkill for the street. B18b1 can last u 2-4 years on a safe power level and can kill alot of high hp factory cars out there. I would rather spend money on a backup motor than to build a new motor 🤷🏽‍♂️

    It really depends! Not gonna make a huge you shouldve done this or that but realistically you can get into the 9's with a very in point tune, turbo (6062) and cam change (type r). Built motors are still worth it but if your end goal is to maintain complete drivability, constantly beat on it in Mexico for fun then a stocker would be fine (assuming someone didnt thrash it beforehand) and esp if its your only vehicle. Lookin forward to your next evolution!

    Finally got to the end of the video. Had to stop halfway and that was about where I was commenting as well. I've definitely seen a 500 horsepower GSR stock engine a few times now but like you said you can only abuse it so much at that point before something just finally goes. There's a service life to the rotating assembly at that point when it's over stressed. Even though it can handle the task after so many expansions and contractions at those power levels something gives so I probably would have done the same thing. You learned where the top of that setup was and made great power when using a good turbo. Props to doing it all on your own as much as you could even as far as welding and taking it out to the track and the road course and so on. As long as you're having fun that's what matters! Best of luck with the belt motor hope you get to see your 8 and skip the 9s

    I built my first ls vtec back in 00” or 01”…it’s been awhile. Had to run a jdm b16 ecu that cut off around 115mph and piezo transducer’s “buzzers” for the knock sensor. Had to make everything just about to make vtec work. Ran a fields vtec controller piggyback to the ecu thru Japanese instructions” not fun”. In the end, I had fun beating on the engine forever.yes I had to drill the dowel open for the heads and use the oil oil plug from the side of the head where I ran the oil feed line into the head to block the hole. It worked

    The reason I went for my built k20 was pure peace of mind. I was messing around with junkyard accord engines and tuning myself. The combination of those two poor decisions lead to two blown motors and a ton of frustration. I decided to stop and take things seriously.
    I decided why not do it right once and for all. I had a good shop build the motor and Derek from IMW tune it. Cost about $5500 total so not cheap but it was worth it. My RSX feels awesome and I’ve been pissing on it for the last year free of worries.

    The reality with high preformance engines is that you're taking a stock engine and alot of times increasing tension, torque n stress on everything that in theory can handle it but wasn't designed for it in order to make horsepower. Sadly that lowers the life expectancy/ longevity of the unit in question. It's never a waste tho cuz it's a learning experience 💯 %

  • @Jotomoz

    I disagree. You need to build the block correctly with the right clearances and it will last for a very long time. My D16 vitara build has been rippin for 7 years now. If your ring gaps, ptw clearances, bearing gaps are wrong it wont last 100 miles. A bad oil pump will kill it even quicker just like a crappy tune.

Well my f series has never given me a single problem since I was 16 (I'm 24), it has 440k miles on it, it's in the car I learned stick on (CB7), and got me to the top of a mountain pass every day for years. I tried for years to blow it up so I would have an excuse to get an H22, but the thing refuses to give up!!
    So it's been through so much at this point that I feel there's no way I can replace it until it decides it's done 😂
    So now that I have a new daily, I'm currently restoring, rebuilding, and upgrading my beater 92 CB7 into a whole new car. It'd be a disservice to rip it's heart out and throw it away at this point 😂 I'm gonna get my child to 1mil miles.

    Built motors and deffinately not a waste of time, but it all depends on your intentions... if you are going to take it to the track and beat on it constantly, of course its on borrowed time... if you build it to be super fuel efficient and you drive it like you are trying to conserve fuel, as long as its built right, it will last. Building for bullwt proof and impossible to destroy intending for long term reliability..... the point is, a motor from the factory is MASS produced and a built motor is more specific to the use. Its not a waste of time

    Here's my opinion.. depending on goals it is and isn't.. it's also depending on what your building too, Hondas sure 100%, a 4g94 based 2.0l hyundai motor with a turbo, good cam and valve springs and gapped rings are the minimum requirements 🤷‍♂️

    Your tuner caused the failure a good tune built motor or not can make any motor last i had a 220k mile 1.8t be big turbo making 350whp and 270wtq which is pushing the rods to its limit last 40k miles before the timing belt broke and bent valves

    It’s not the motors that make a difference, it’s all in the tune / tuner. Advancing timing or retarding timing is a big deal. I’ve seen multiple motors go because of this. Stock , built , and semi built.

    Boosted John!!! I haven’t been on TH-cam for a while since you haven’t uploaded as much but I’m glad to watch!
    What’s your opinion of super tech springs on gsr for a daily? I’m going to replace the valve seals, should I just send it with some springs too or just seals only ? It’s my daily

    b18c1 Gsr can handle boost.. we built one and beat tf out of it at 300hp low boost.. racing with high hp 2x what we had on the street and also raced in index drag strip classes and drove it back home... even raced with a radiator exhaust head stuff leaking lmfao..

    How is it even possble to make 500whp on a stock b18? How much boost were you running and what type of fuel??

      Valvesprings, expecially if an old b16 head, are important. Otherwise should be fine.

    I don't know why that guy's Volvo was so slow. My stock bottom end LS turbo car (3600 lbs) makes 830whp and it traps 117 in the 1/8th haha. Built engines are good depending on how much power you're trying to make. B series engines are getting pretty expensive now, people want like $1100 for them plus shipping. They used to be like $450-500 =(

    considering i make money competing in my 1khp car. its already paid for itself, infact its afforded me a second engine as a spare. so theres one bullet point for an argument.
