Why Lethal Company Outsold Call of Duty

  • In a much-deserved turn of events, Lethal Company outsold Call of Duty. The implications of this are exciting. While in the video I say "at least a moment" that is underselling it. Lethal basically outsold Call of Duty all month. It's a massive W because Lethal Company is both fun and indie-made.

that is pretty cool, but i see one problem of big companies hirings indie devs, their unrealistic deadlines where they keep delaying the project by the devs wishs to the point where they go, "I dont care that the game is not ready to release, we have sunk MONEY into this and we have delayed it long enough, push for a release and slap a $60-$70 price tag so we can get our money back and put a fix for it later!"
Take Cyberpunk 2077 for example, the game was simply released too early in a bugged up mess cause the publishers want their money, which had lead to the games downfall as soon as it released disappointing fans as this game was overhyped. Big game companies have opened up so many boxes of bad ideas that any game the released leads to disappointment in most and the very few are going "they'll come back strong with a new release." when its just the same cycle of bad release after bad release.
At least Valve throws away projects that simply don't work out instead of pushing for a release and most of their money is their platform and games they have released 10+ years ago (including microtransactions that are just cosmetic)

One moment I'll never forget is when I joined a team of randoms, they were on a 1000 quota save and they were about to do Titan, I had NEVER gone to Titan, so when I saw the big looming building shrouded in fog, I felt AFRAID to just get out of the ship, but because I wasn't mission control, I had no other choice, I made my way up and entered the strangely peaceful main building, I gathered a handful of alright scrap before bringing it back, but one thing was missing, the person who was mission control, there was nobody there, my first thought was "Huh, maybe I should go to the fire exit, we can regroup and go together there!" and so I did, I walked in with nothing but my trusty flashlight through the dark halls, only to see the little girl standing in the doorway just stare back at me and I froze up for a solid 4 seconds only to turn and fucking BOOK it back out, I ran all the way back to the ship and checked the cameras to see if the team was alive, and it wasn't, I had no idea what happened to them and how they died so rapidly, but I was the only one left, and i had the ship take off.

Me and my friends were playing a few weeks back, and got an absolutely golden clip from our gameplay.
One of my friends was getting killed by a snare flea, and right as he died, and his camera switched over to us, right as he was hoping to see us rushing to help him, what does he see?

We managed to get what we needed, until we faced a Coilhead. We got on a rail soon too since a thumper crashed down. My friend followed my directions and killed the thumper while I stared at the Coil head, as if a rookie was being guided by a vet. We hit midnight and the ship left us.

Like on titan, my friend is getting haunted by the little girl, we're just talking on the ship waiting for the others to get back when my friend screams "NO!" and his head explodes, funniest shit I ever saw. Another time on March I'm playing with randoms and one of em is trying to kill a spider with a shovel, he keeps headbutting a pipe on the ceiling that's stopping him from getting on the railing and the spider mauls him to death. So while I'm sitting there on the railing on the other side of the gap having an "oh shit moment" a hoarder bug just scurries by me and steals the shovel, I managed to escape alive since the exit was pretty close but the spider bit my ass on the way out

SOMEHOW, I managed to find the exit (not the fire exit because the moon was flooding, it was also my first time in a flooded map) made my to the ship but there was a giant waiting for me. Decided to book my ass onto the ship and I somehow made it even while holding the axle, so it wasn't a total loss. My teammates were so hyped up about it lmao.

while hiring indie developers sounds good on paper, and alot them definitely deserve to be able to have those kinds of resources for their vision, triple A studios hiring indie devs wouldnt actually change anything. This is because the problem is with the industry and the studios themselves, not the devs. developers at these big studios dont make generic cookie cutter games because they want to, they do it because they are required to, because the studio knows that the formula has worked in the past and is therefore 'safe'. and they arent willing to take a risk on something new, so any time a developer tries to bring them something new, they're told to change it to whats safe. whats more the games are also poorly optimized and cobbled together because despite their budget, devs are told to meet impossible deadlines, so they dont have time to optimize it, or make sure it actually works.
sorry about the big rant, I know that this wasnt the focus of the video, and that this is probably already known, the specific line about hiring indie devs, felt like saying that its the devs fault that the game is bad, and I wanted to ensure that record was straight as towards where the fault actually lies
Tl;Dr: devs usually arent lazy, the gaming industry is toxic as all fuck and the blame for stale and unfinished triple A games lies with usually lies companies behind them

If you give a indie dev all the resources they could ask for and then some, I think they wouldn't really know what to do with all of it.

Solo is a lot easier than people think, ok it makes it more of a true rogue like because if you die once the chances of hitting quota go out the window BUT the monsters are actually toned down; you can basically look at and chase the bracken away (DONT TRY THIS IN MULTIPLAYER YOU WILL DIE) making him a lot easier to deal with if you keep your head on a swivel. Snare fleas fall off your head eventually and coil heads can’t open doors. Also if there’s a jester they’re virtually no threat provided you know your way to an exit. This doesn’t mean it’s not terrifying or hard as hell but it’s significantly easier than being the last one alive on a multiplayer lobby deep in the maze with two coil heads and a bracken trying to hug you. Learn to play solo and you’ll love the game more, trust me

I learned about lethal company from some online friends a little bit before it blew up and got widely popular. Friend was like I found this game it’s kind of like phasmophobia but in space and trying to not get killed by aliens. It immediately grabbed my interest as I loved ohasmophobia despite not really having a proper mic to play it. Went out bought a proper mic and bought the game and I played for maybe two hours that first play station and I absolutely had a blast. There’s just something about jumping off the ship early breaking your legs but somehow still surviving and then you and a friend immediately get eaten by a work 10 seconds upon landing on a planet because you didn’t know what the eclipse weather condition did. It’s freaking great!

The thing that makes Lethal company as good as it is is not just the fact that its 800MB (It'll probably get larger in the future) don't need a high end gaming laptop/PC or the well programmed monsters. Heck not even the maps. Its the randomness. Just like how in Roblox natural disaster, the game is still popular not because it looks good but because of the random moments. Lethal company is programmed this way intentionally or unintentionally. Since everything isn't repetitive and every game has its own unique twist. You get a reason to play more and in the end you don't feel tired.
Because of this randomness Lethal Company gained comedic moments as well as horrifying ones. Which is probably why it caught the interest of many. If the game was repetitive then people would get bored of it quickly. Any game that can master randomness (In a good way) will DEFINETLY be good. Because that is a reason why most of the good games are respected. a few examples can be ARK, Phasmophobia, GTA. (Randomness isn't the only thing making these games good, but hopefully you can see my point)
I'm not saying that that's the only good thing about it, because personally i enjoyed it because of the random horrifying moments with the well programmed monsters and their horrifying sound designs. The bracken and coil-head turn me into the flash. The reason COD is less enjoyable is because it has 0 randomness so it is just very repetitive.

Lethal company's randomness with AI feels like a mix of intention and happy accidents. The AI often has the hallmarks of terrible, erratic AI, but in this scenario that works perfectly. Especially the braken. It is incredibly inconsistent, giving the feeling that it does things on a whim. Sometimes it stalks you, sometimes it just runs up from a mile behind you and instantly murders you. Sometimes looking at it will dissuade it no matter how close, other times if it is on top of you it's a death sentance. The factor of not knowing what the fuck this erratic creature is going to do in response to your actions adds so much.

The unfortunate part about studios hiring indie developers to make/design new stuff (like hazbin and I’m gonna say probably TADC as well) is that they almost immediately snuff out what made the indie film/game so great, they scrap original voice actors that people liked, they re-write the stories, and they keep it in production for 5 years without any updates or progress it seems. So although it sounds good in theory to have indie producers have access to “production” quality funds, I think the fan base just needs to be more active and donate directly to keep that originality and avoid sellout pieces of shit like Amazon and Netflix from puppeteering them.

Lethal Company manages to someone strike a perfect balance with its skill ceiling. Anyone can download the game with zero knowledge and have fun, but there's also so much depth to its mechanics and ai that allow more hardcore players enjoy the game too. The procedural generation does a lot of heavy lifting too, making every run feel unique whether you've been playing for 3 hours or 300. If Zeekerss meets his goal of adding a ton of monsters and variations to game, I can see this game becoming the Minecraft of horror games. Especially with the modding scene already popping off AND Zeekerss working to incorporate ideas for mods into the base game. The difference between COD and LC lies in the "why" of it all. Every creative decision in LC was made for the sake of fun while most decisions made in COD's development were made to maximize profits, draw in new spenders, increase playtime, and sell microtransactions. Things like operators only exist in COD so they can sell you something in the store while LC isn't trying to sell you anything but a good time with your friends. The gaming industry has lacked heart for quite awhile and it's awesome to see that there's still talented devs out there that make games just for the fun of it without a worry for shareholders.

No the thing is Zeekers made 20 games before getting a hit like this, and he will never be able to make another one like it. It's a blind luck. There was an undervalued market for coop game (which I still think is the case), and horror is one of the easiest to do. Studios don't have the time or money to throw at projects that have a 5% chance of being a hit. It makes a lot of sense to spend 10 million on the next god of war game or last of us, or fifa then it is on some random indie game.

      1. No. Most all of his games have had some form of internet fame, such as it steals.
      2. The co-op market is incredibly over saturated, so this game got popular through it's own merit.
      3. Studios have literally billions of dollars to throw at the wall
      4. 5% is nowhere near accurate. Every single popular game in the last decade has been an indie game, not to mention some of the most well selling games of all time were made by hired indie devs. Portal, team fortress 2, half life, and others.

I have to agree, this lower-poly models is actually what makes the monsters scarier. in fact, to act as a direct comparison to Call of Duty, I feel like the Coil-Head, the most distinctly adult-humanoid monster, best exemplifies this.
Call of Duty likes to make their soldiers and human characters look ultra realistic and whatnot, being able to see the pores on their faces and all that. but all those features don't necassarily add anything to the game and only serve to add to the memory problem. when it comes to the humanoid monsters of Lethal Company however, using Coil-Head for the example, the graphical style and deliberate unrealism add to the fear factor of the monster. the Coil-Head is supposed to look like a human, yet its jagged appearance and misshapen features make it very unsettling to look at...which happens to be how you avoid dying to it.
The creature's physical appearance has a meaningful affect on the gameplay that evokes a legitimate emotional response. you don't just think "well that looks neat" or "that looks impressive" because they manage to render the tiniest pores and details you wouldn't notice otherwise, it instead leaves you paralyzed with fear as to what to think of it, apart from a single thought: "what the actual fuck is that and how can I get as far away from it as possible", like you're faced with an actual threat.
(this probably sucks but I didn't know how to get my thoughts across otherwise)

I love this game. It takes the co-op horror of Phasmophobia but adds it’s own unique, fun, and memorable twist on it and always keeps you immersed. However, unlike phasmophobia and it’s clones, the facilities are never the same (the exteriors are, but the interiors are randomly generated seeds), so you never know if you’re gonna have one with easy access to scrap and exits or a winding, dark maze that you can’t hope to escape. Plus the fact that proximity isn’t just a way to talk to people, but an actual mechanic that can get you killed if you’re not careful is great for tension and horror!
And then you have MW3, which does nothing new, gives you FAR less than what MW2 did, and still asks for $70, nearly 200 gigs of storage, and to spend more on battlepasses and dlc…like come on, Activision! If an indie dev team of ONE is outselling you, a billion dollar AAA company, clearly you must have some flaw in how you create your games, but that would imply higher ups like Kotick are actually humble and see consumers as people and not walking dollar signs to be squeezed to oblivion.

I'm so happy that Lethal Company is getting the attention it deserves. I still feel pretty pessimistic about the idea of AAA taking cues -- there's now too much money involved for the risk-taking and experimentation that produces great things. Who cares, though? In my view, this is a reminder that we can create the games we want ourselves. It's also worth remembering that there's a huge back catalogue of AAA games from the before times, when the people calling the shots actually cared about human creativity. It honestly sickens me that interactive art has been co-opted by corporate entities so early into its life, turned into just another thing to keep us wanting. But, it has, and so we should make sure that Lethal Company is not a one-off. Let's all support and make art like this game: stuff that's made with a vision beyond return on investment for stakeholders. All this other garbage? These games that encourage children to gamble? Have you taking abuse from mentally ill strangers for a drop of ranked elo? I feel like my comment will get hidden if I swear, but you can imagine a few words I might use here. I'm not talking down on people who play AAA games, I've played them my whole life. But it's undeniable that the state of the games industry is just another cause for young people wasting their time on isolating, toxic, addictive, *predatory* experiences. We deserve better, and Lethal Company IS this 'better'.

I love he idea of giving Indie devs massive budgets, but I think what made lethal company successful was how it was creative despite its small budget. Like with Call of Duty, millions of dollars is no replacement for actual creativity, and a lot of that innovation comes from limitation, as the developers need to use their resources carefully and squeeze the most out of even very simple concepts.

I'm excited to see what follows, because now he's made a fortune, and he's still not not answering to a CEO. VGInsights say he made over $40 Million on this game. He's just totally free to create whatever he wants next at whatever pace he feels like. My only worry is that the pressure of expectations will ruin it. We should all expect his next game to be worse, and let it be, so that he can enjoy doing it.

@@iAmLufa I agree obviously, but sadly, it won't be. Not as long as profit-making dictates the economy. The logic inherent to capitalism makes such a thing as Valve necessarily the absolute excemption (indeed, I'm still somewhat in awe at Gaben for not succumbing to typical CEO-anti-social-behaviour, while wondering how he managed to avoid it). It's no coincidence that EA, Ubisoft and other companies are run by sociopaths hell-bent on sacrificing art for money by exploiting the workers that make said money for them. I despise them, they must be sad, cold, empty and lonely people, all that money cannot be a substitute for emotional warmth and genuine friendships (doesn't mean money ain't incredibly important in this society, obviously) and you know what, I hope I'm right about their suffering.
Apologies for getting all political, but if we want more Valves, we need socialism.

i remember the first time me and my crew (three of us in total) went to dine, there were land mines everywhere, we were moving down a stairway looking for more loot, instead of loot we found a spring head, I quickly start staring at him while my crew recollected themselves (they were freaking out) one of them stepped on a mine killing both of them. I kept staring and moving back through dark rooms, carefully listening for mines while i tried finding the stairs. out of the dark in front of me walked a jester and he started cranking, then i heard LAUGHTER, the spring head rushing around corners i"d passed, mines beeping reminding me not to sprint backwards as terrified as i was, i knew the little girl would be coming for me soon. It was all in the span of maybe a minute that felt much longer before i found myself backing onto a lit staircase, i could finally see what was in front but i still had to walk backwards, at this point the jester's music was playing fast, he would come out soon, the little girl is making more frequent appearances, my line of sight of the coilhead keeps breaking and he keeps gaining ground, but finally in front of me is a doorway in a large room, i made it to the main entrance, i sprinted backwards as the girl skipped to me, she started getting so close, i knew the exit was right behind me, i risked turning my back to the coilhead but i had no other option, the shuffling sound of him sprinting at me while i waited for that circle to fill so that i could escape had me crapping myself, I ran to the ship before the girl had a chance to appear and chase me again. I left empty handed and the only survivor, my crew had watched that whole experience and were nearly as scared as i was, they were breathing so heavily. (we did NOT end up meeting quota and died anyways)

Lethal Company gives everything you need to learn the game without forcing you to do anything, no tutorial, nothing. You just know the controls and have access to a computer where you can read everything. I know some players like tutorials, but I feel the way Lethal Company handles everything just makes the game 10 times better on top of the already good idea.

I think Lethal Company has above average potential for retention, just based on the open way it's structured. Zeekerss can just add new creatures or items all he wants without having to really alter anything else. Just make whatever and add it to the RNG pool. Or if he wants to do a more intense update, he could introduce more moons, dungeon types, or weather patterns. It's the type of game that can't be Too Full, you know? There's no limit to how much stuff he can just drop in willy-nilly, and more stuff makes it less predictable. It is an ideal setup for a horror comedy game.

I didn't realize he worked on Lightbulb and Silent Dark.
Both of those games were extremely good.
IIRC, Lightbulb was a topdown horror game with alot of scares related to, y'know.. lights.
Silent Dark was a game I don't remember too well, but I BELIEVE it was a psychological horror game about an alien baby that convinces you to lose your fear and simply fight back, killing the monster chasing you? Though I might be mixing that up, because again, I don't remember it too well, been years, can't replay it because it's broken now. I do remember it was very enjoyable, though.

I think one of the biggest criticisms I can give for Lethal Company is that giants are the reason I don't visit vow or march. Simply because there isn't a counter to them, even forces of nature like the jester or earthworm have counters or ways to play around them. If a giant sees you it will likely never leave

    • @uknowimeyen
      @uknowimeyen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Theoretically, breaking Line Of Sight should counter giants. They stop aggro if they can't see you. The problems are the lack of obstacles to block LOS, how fast they are, and the fact that they don't wander like the dogs, they like to linger in areas. If they walked away after losing interest they would be so much more manageable. They love to linger around the ship once they chase somebody in, stopping any other player from getting to it.

I love how this game is both difficult and requires you to actually think and learn to get good at it, but is also exceedingly fun even if you're not good at it. It doesn't matter if you ever manage to get good or not because you have fun either way. Even if you never meet a quota you and your friends will still experience the joy of hilarious deaths.
