Ardoyne Village grew up in the townland of Edenderry, Edenderry is from the Irish Eaidan Doire meaning the brown of the hill at the oak grove, in the early 17th century Sir Arthur Chichester and Moses Hill of Hillsborough settled a lease of land in County Antrim which included Ardoyne, transcripts of the deeds dated 18th April 1606 are held in the public records office of Northern Ireland.
I myself have lived in Ardoyne my whole life and im proud to say i'm a 6th generation Ardonian my ancesters have lived in Ardoyne since the 1800s.
Cool video I just came across it by chance a few inaccuracies but not everyones perfect, the 'homeless' guy you videoed is not actually homeless he stands there having a drink everyday but goes home when he has too much lol

I was drinking in the Crumlin Star club on the night of August 1981 when the hunger striker Tomas Mc Elwee died. I was a visitor from Galway but I had relations in Belfast so I was intrigued with these areas. Suddenly the air in Ardoyne changed and became charged with emotions. The women came out and started banging dustbin lids on the road..some locals advised me to get a taxi out of the area as they were going to be trouble that night. At least one person was shot dead. I got a taxi back into Shaftesbury Square that night and never told my relations where I had been. But I think Belfast is still a beautiful red-brick city in the shadow of Cavehill and the Black Mountain...and anytime I hear a helicopter hovering overhead it reminds me of Belfast during those tense times 🛡

Captain Robert Nairac, was famously photographed in Brompton Park, Ardoyne, talking to locals, during a tour of duty there...shortly afterwards he vanished in South Armagh, on the night 🌙 of 15th May 1977...he was the great enigma of the conflict 🥀

Robert Nairac spent time in Dublin and Galway circa 1967...this was before he joined the Army and became folklore. He stayed in Spiddal, where many of the locals speak Irish. I think it sad that he can't be found and at least he could be buried with his family back in England. But he took extreme chances and forfeited his life. Maybe he had a death-wish. So many died during those days. Time makes ghosts of us all 💀🔔🌻

The Troubles, also known as Na Trioblóidí in Irish, was a violent conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. The conflict was primarily political and nationalistic, and was rooted in centuries of conflict between predominantly Catholic Ireland and mainly Protestant England. The conflict was centered around whether Northern Ireland would remain part of the United Kingdom or split away to reunite with the Republic of Ireland.

The area is inhabited by generations of good, respectable families who were thrust into a war with the British armed forces and RUC/UVF/UDA with British govenment backing. This and many other districts were denied development and investment because of their resistance and were choked and ghettoised because they refused to bend a knee to their occupiers. Thank God we are all on a path to peace now and I am delighted to hear comments on how well Ardoyne looks. How far we have come in a few years from the warzone I grew up in, and a hello to all our Protestant neighbours who came through the same experience. PEACE IS GREAT!!
