    The reactions to your number plate is not imagined. I was visiting family in a Protestant area with a car I hired in Dublin. When my uncle got home he was in a bit of a panic and asked if that was my hire car out front. When I said it was he said to park it in the garage or it would be burned. I thought he was over-dramatising it, but then when I went out to re-park the car there was a small crowd of thug types glaring at me. I spoke in the broadest Australian accent I could muster and they all went back inside their houses. Crazy.

    The twelfth of July is an absolute embarrassment, the dregs of society falling around drunk and coked up, pissing in the streets and throwing their rubbish on the ground.
    It's exactly like you said - a huge middle finger, but not just to Catholics it's to absolutely everyone who doesn't "celebrate", ie the majority of the population of NI.
    I'm not catholic, my family background is protestant with Scottish ancestors however I consider myself 100% Irish and I'd love to see reunification.
    I was born in 1971, grew up in a suburban part of Belfast, my parents didn't raise me to hate anyone.

      Also hilarious that it feels similar to the US south. What one of the fellas was trying to tell you through his accent helps explain that - many of the early settlers in the American Appalachian’s are from Ulster. The reason they are called “hill billies” comes from the history in Northern Ireland (devotees of King Billy, who moved to the Appalachian “hills”)

    Your Gaeilge is pretty good buddy. One minor thing (gotta be that guy):
    Tá is pronounced 'Taw' as opposed to 'Ta'. The mark which appears over the 'A' (called a 'fada' and pronounced 'fod-ah) literally means 'long-stretch' and when seen over a vowel (which it only ever will be) means you broaden the sound of that particular vowel sound.
    For example:
    á=aw (as in thaw),
    é=ay (as in ray),
    í=ee (as in green),
    ó=ow (as in snow) and
    ú=ew (as in dew).

    It's called commonage. Grazing rights in common ownership, likely several families in the area though these days, might be only a few still left farming. The problem with free grazing sheep and wild deer/goats is that they eat everything and no trees grow. That's why all the uplands in Ireland are bare.

      @@bogbayIs there no plan to do any rewilding in Ireland?
      I'm in Scotland and there are a number of rewilding projects all about me. We have a lot of problems with far too many deer (and no predators worth speaking of), but landowners are putting up deer fencing and tree guards nonetheless, to good effect.
      Surely, a little fencing to enclose some areas, especially around watercourses, would be sufficient to protect planted trees.
      Sheep farming is still 'reasonably' common around here - I suppose, but a lot of farmers think it's never been profitable enough (only the supermarkets 'really' make profit from lamb). So, I'm seeing cattle replacing them in smaller fields.
      From what I hear, some farmers are planting woodlands and trying regenerative farming, driving their cattle through established woodlands as part of 'regenerative farming' methods (one farmer near me does this on occasion). The cows trample the brambles, chew on a few woodland plants as well as grasses, and then they are moved on. Turns out this is beneficial for woodlands - instead of being considered damaging, as it was in the past.
      There is money to be made in rewilding. It's much more labour intensive, that is true, and farmers may have to think out plans for what they could grow best and where crops should go to do best.
      I've only got a very small field, but I've selected native species that have multiple uses, mixing them in with hybrid trees/shrubs.
      I'm growing trees for fuel, fruit, nuts.
      An understory for valuable berry plants, clump-form bamboo for a future local supply in garden canes (so many still come all the way from China, yet it is a plant considered invasive in the British Isles).
      Hazel for walking sticks and rustic fencing (there are local craftsmen near me).
      Reeds for weaving, Basket Willow for the obvious.
      And then ground cover flowers (for supporting a neighbour's many beehives. He has about 2 dozen at the moment). Very short fruit plants (Blaeberry/Whortleberry - superb jam; Wild Strawberry - even better jam; Sweet Violets - for perfumes).
      I grow bulbs and wild flowers - as this is still a bit of a starter industry, more people getting interested in rewilding their gardens, and wild flowers plants costing more than you would think! I have some wild plants of quite high value now.
      Wild mushrooms is also a bit of a lucrative industry worth getting into. It's a little tricky to get things started on ground that has been grazed for centuries, but it is doable.
      I now have Griselles, Boletes and Puffballs growing here. Still trying to get Chanterelles to take. It will happen one day. Fungi growing in a 'wild' sense, is long term. But farmers can invest in woodchips infused with spores in young woodlands to get things cracking along much faster. Look in a supermarket at a pack of wild mushrooms - around £2.50 for about 4 mushrooms (and they are not organic!) I've got a heap of wild mushrooms in my kitchen right now, just need a little brushing over. Worth over £100 for 5 minutes picking, half an hour's sorting. I can sell them at farmer's markets or direct to a fancy restaurant. I'm going out to pick more mushrooms today. There are edible mushrooms that will fetch about £150 per kilo, and a farmer investing in dipped Beech saplings can give his children a future in truffle production.
      This list is actually the tip of the iceberg in terms of opportunities in permanent planted crops. I didn't even get into medicinals, herbs, natural mulch production and natural dyes (yes, I have started growing these too).
      When the alternative is a load of sheep, which can be fickle. There are always a few that simply decide to die (one escaped it's field, lay on my neighbour's doorstep and died right there. Another repeatedly stuck it's head through my fence until I would chase it off. And there, one day, it died. No reason. Just completely bonkers. Others have been killed by a local wild puma. Foxes take lambs. Ewes will attack and abandon their own lambs. Crows will peck out their eyes.
      No, I think I'm doing the best thing for my land. I've added 2 inches of new topsoil since the project began. And I've just raised a clutch of ducklings to forage on the land and produce eggs (as those who are allergic to chicken eggs can usually eat duck eggs. Also, Asians prefer home baking with duck eggs over chicken eggs).
      So much potential with land, and most farmers are not making the most of it.
      A farmer friend of mine surprised me by listening to some of the things I am planning and doing. He has a large farm, which was primarily sheep. Last time I drove through, he'd got rid of the lot, brought in some cows in one or two fields, the rest is now trees.
      Sheep farming is hard work for poorer returns, as supermarkets put a stranglehold on food markets, usually with the express desire of land grabbing, creating super farms, and generalising food (which is becoming more industrialised and increasingly nutrient poor). Permaculture and regenerative farming is way more labour intensive, but also has the opportunity to provide harvests all year round. I can now harvest something from my little field all year round, which eliminates the problem of labour only being seasonal. Here, it's the type of harvest that is seasonal.
      Ireland still has very good soil. It isn't as run down and thin as many places in Great Britain and on the continent.
      Making changes now to really change the fortunes of many farmers trying to get along on sheep (which do require a lot less work, but damage land at the same time - and in an age where very stupid governments can suddenly come up with insane plans that don't work.
      Look at the current EU directive making farmers turn 20% of land over to rewilding - with no integrated plan that provides valuable food for humans 'as well as' for wildlife. It's truly the maddest thing the EU has come up with so far. So poorly thought out, and it will lead to food scarcity and a need to reverse that trend.

We all searched for him, thinking he was angry at one of us. We finally found him laying down in the back of his pick-up, with pouring rain in his face and he was still saying: "I'm bloody pissed." We had to physically pick him up and carry him back to the stage and on the way, figured out he meant drunk. Lol We even had to put the drum sticks in his hands. Also worth noting, the catholics of Northern Ireland didn't "push for unity" in the 1960's. The IRA always existed but the peaceful Civil Rights movement that started in the 60's was a catalyst, Catholics in Northern Ireland, who were second class citizens, marched for equal rights. Protestants burned down entire catholic neighbourhoods, the british army were flown in and shot dead innocent catholics. This caused a lot of people to turn to the IRA for protection and a lot of people joined. Then the fight for unity ramped up.

      What a completely biased rubbish explanation. Conditions for working class Protestants were just as bad as for Catholics. If people hadn't started attacking police in the first place none of it would have happened. In fact, the worst terrorist attack was by the IRA in August of 98 after the Good Friday Agreement was signed. Says a lot about their lack of integrity and lack of basic respect for human life. That's why the army was called in in the first place. Catholics used terrorism to redress concerns which is savage and wicked. Then the IRA terrorists murdered thousands of men, women and children in bombings and shootings, from pubs to police all over Britain. The Irish Catholic IRA terrorist criminals murdered NI Protestants and even continued to murder police after the "peace agreement" was signed which shows they cannot be trusted. And other areas of Britain were just as poor as "Catholic" areas of Ireland. Hopefully people don't fall for the communist lies and propaganda. In addition, the IRA worked with PLO terrorists and Basque ETA terrorists. They are nothing but bloodthirsty murderers. Always get both sides of a story. There are sides A, B, C and the truth. Always look for the truth. Persecution against Protestants in the Republic of Ireland was so bad that Protestants had to flee to Northern Ireland. IRA terrorists blew up Mountbatten on his yacht even. Now the EU has colonized , runs and controls Ireland from Brussels. How ironic.

    In the 1960s, the catholics merily wanted equality. It was'nt about re-joining with the republic.the protestant community wanted to basicly erradicate the catholic community, this is why there was civil rights marches. It was also the case that if you owned land (which many protestants did) at that time, you were entitled to more that one vote. This ensured that there would always be a protestant government. So, it was'nt about re-joining with the republic, it was basic equality.

      @markw5170 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Of course there are 2 narratives to
      @adrianmccann6428 comment.
      My great grandmother (a Protestant) would have been born in what was Tyrone, Ireland (Northern Ireland today). She was chased from her home and given trouble JUST BECAUSE SHE was Protestant. Once she moved and settled elsewhere, her new home and business in a new town far a way was then blown up by the IRA in a car bomb in the town. Protestants where poor and discriminated against by the state as well as Catholics in the 60's 70's 80's THEY SUFFERED EQUALLY IN THE POTATO FAMINE of the 1800s yet you would think only Catholics died in that! It wasn't just as one sided as is made out by The Republican Zealots of today
      Anyway sure it's 2024 and the tables have turned. It is just the prods have the raw end of the deal nowadays- They are still NI citizens along with their Catholic neighbours, brothers and sisters but both are second class British citizens - treated less than those in GB. Prods STILL live in sub standard housing - the Shankill Road and likes of the Donegall Road and East Belfast are crumbling while the Nationalist areas are on the up. We have 2 tier policing in favour of Nationalism. We had over a decade where a Protestant police recruit had a more difficult job getting a job in policing over a Catholic with so called POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION! - this is after predecessors signed up to serve during the troubles to put down and halt the Republican, Marxist, Guerella group - The IRA. Most if not all of those terrorists then being ALLOWED OUT of jail in 1998 under the new peace deal while others never captured and in hiding, given ON THE RUN letters from the gov. in a shady deal, granting them immunity from any atrocities or murders from the past e.g. the Hyde Park Bomber. We have Protestant school children performing less well at school now compared to in the past. We have football and Rugby (classed as FOREIGN sports by the Sectarian GAA) getting a small percentage of money for sports but the GAA, Irish Republic and British gov tear up that deal - a deal of equal money across the 3 sports being handed out. I forget the exact figures but lets say Rugby and Football got 100 million each if it was even that amount - the GAA are demanding 400 million, yes 400 million for a new stadium. Yea you see it is all good as a Catholic, Nationalist, Republican if you are getting what you want from the big bad British government. Just like in the 1600s when these same Irish men fought for KING JAMES. Thankfully WE defeated him and the rest of the rebel scum and restored parity of esteem, dignity and FREEDOM to these Isles (With the blessing of The Pope). In a battle that reverberated around Europe and the world and which results and effects are still celebrated and felt today. No Surrender.
      And let's have the truth about the IRA and Provos from the Troubles era. They where instigated, enhanced and encouraged by over zealous Easter Rising celebrations across Ireland each year. Events which had to be scaled back due to concerns of inciting terrorism and generally rabble rousing rebels in NI. Shall we talk about Sinn Fein and Ireland's support of Russia back then and events held? Shall we talk about De Valera working with and being friendly with Adolf Hitler and the NAZIS - Yea it's no real surprise Ireland of today supports Palestine and HAMAS yet as is seen in the media they cannot tolerate poor vulnerable people in need - burning them out of their temporary accommodation.
      Don't dare try to lecture on racism, discrimination and the likes while pretending to be innocent and some sort of little hard done by IRISH victim of the British because like i said, it's all good when you have the upper hand, (the all these issues are irrelevant to you) just like when a NATIVE IRISH MAN - General Patrick E. Connor lead the way in THE BIGGEST NATIVE AMERICAN MASSACRE in 1863 The Bear River Massacre....Wow that almost reminds me of the persecution, burning of and murder of Protestants across Europe in the Wars of Religion in the 1600s. Ahh racism, sectarianism, hatred, murder and mayhem. A learnt trait perhaps? Perhaps you guys are the experts in this topic after all?

      God made all people from one man, Adam. All people are brothers.
      The God saves people by preaching (1st Corinthians 1: 21, John 6: 45, Isaiah 54: 13). He has nothing to do with novaday's wars.
      Unfortunately, the lying and corrupt clergy is silent about this. They even bless racists and nazis in the name of God. Then deceived people hate and kill their brothers.
      The problem is that the Devil rules the world. He is a liar and a murderer. This is why deception and violence are everywhere. This is the reason why people cry over stray cats and hate their brothers. This is the reason why Hitler got the power, but Christ was executed as "blasphemer" and "rioter" by denunciation of clergy. This is the reason why the whole world is Sodom.

    A lot of Ireland is accessible to the public even if it has a gate. These are private lands but you can travel them. The common courtesy is to not settle it, trash or alter it, and to be considerate. Always close gates behind yourself to keep cattle in and make sure roads aren't blocked for the landowners. Usually they don't call a towtruck to get around a parked car, they just chain their tractor to the car and pull it into the bush and then wait for you to come knock on their door.

    The southern US, particularly Appalachia is largely populated by decendents of the Scots Irish aka Ulster Scots so it's not surprising to find simularity in the culture but both communities were historically very religious. When the republics' constitution was written the first words were "The Laws of Ireland shall be consistent with the laws of God" Ireland was one of the most devoutly Catholic countries in the world untill very recent decades.

    As an Orangeman and Protestant I'm not sure you picked the best place to visit but I do hope you enjoyed the 12th. You went to the Sandy Row area which has become known for its drinking even drugs on the 12th July, an area most Protestants wouldn't dream of going to watch the parade. In American terms its like going to the 'hood' to watch a parade when you could have seen it in a downtown area. There was 17 other large 12th July parades across the country that would have been much more family friendly, you probably would have got better camera interactions with people. Having said that I hope you enjoyed it all the same.

    1) Sheep rub against the fence and stick their heads out to eat the greener grass on the other side, and they will eventually get out since you didn't lock the gate back after you left.
    2) Those barns aren't abandoned. They're used during storms, during the winter snows, for mothers giving birth to ewes, and for holding pens during the shearing season.
    3) Yeah, it's private property. Ireland doesn't have a big sheep-rustling (thieving) problem, so most rural pasture gates are left with a bolt lock, not a padlock.

    A little hint of advice, when in the rural areas , and you open a gate, you close a gate. You dont leave it open while you are not next to the open gate, so you dont let animals out of any enclosed area.
