and i dont know why scientists try ways to communicate with aliens while we're having an friendly alien dude sitting in front of us and teaching us about their music ?
I've been trying to find balance recently with my plain strings and curious what gauge's are your high E B and G? and do you have an extended scale like 26.5"?
Dude this is sick, not just for showing us the song but also for explaining the whole theory and writing ideas/process behind it, which is really interesting and has given me a lot of writing inspiration/ideas, thank you ! I also have to ask did you study classical music because a lot of the theory concepts you seem to use in your writing are very typical of classical theory
My pleasure! Yes, I did. Took 2 years of AP theory in high school while taking 1 to 2 additional private lessons every week with an assortment of teachers for years. I've also read a handful of theory books on various topics. Teachers were Nick Cordle, Oliver Althoen, Doug Osterkamp, Adam Speth, and Chuck Jay. Was basically doing lessons for like 5 years plus 2 years of high school theory classes.
Ayy Miles! Recent music major graduate here, working in the music business now in management. As someone who has taken Theory I, II, III, IV, and jazz Theory, let me just say: MAN! I love your explanations. When this stuff moves by so quickly, especially the tapping portions, it's easy to think "sounds cool, 'alien' stuff, I get it." But you've illustrated the science behind your part-writing and I admire it even more now! Thank you for the one-take instruction video. Love it!
This album is going to be their best work in terms of a neoclassical approach. Embryonic anomaly was insane for the sake of being insane. With excessively technical; and what some may say unnecessary, use of diminished scales. Yet it was one of the most interesting albums in metal. Dingir was straight up deathcore heaviness with some overlapping tech parts. It was better than embryonic because it felt less forced and seemed more professional...in addition to being produced cleaner as well. They capitalized on the term coined after them "aliencore" in this album by infusing dissonant chords with diminished scales. Lugal Ki En was one of the most extraordinarily melodic and technical records we've ever had. The use of synth and acoustic was executed perfectly when done with every song on the album. It was the first time I had a magnificent revelation that what I was listening to truly sounded 100% inhuman. It was as if the first listen from start to finish left me in shock and I was intoxicated by the complexity and utter talent that these guys have. The second listen I was still just as blown away. Not to mention it was the album that brought in a third of the current fan base. So far Ultu Ulla gives me the impression of a more traditional and fluid sound as opposed to maniacal riffs filled with violent finger tapping. I'm excited!
Thanks. Previous records don't use a whole lot of diminished scales at all. Generally using whole tone stuff with harmonies of a major third as opposed to a diatonic harmony. This record is far more in the tonal realm of music vs a lot of atonal stuff as heard in previous records. Very structured and written with a different mindset, while keeping the 'classic' stylistic sounds previously heard on older records.
Thanks for the support everyone! Hope you all enjoy the video! I do offer private lessons. Contact me @ Facebook.com/milesdimitribaker or instagram.com/milesdimitribaker
Yesss man, thanks for covering the theory aspect of it too, not just showing the riffs! I really liked the "theme and variation" thing you've got going on and will definitely try to apply it to improve my songwriting. Cheers man!
I've been playing guitar for about 10 or so years now, I regret never learning the fundamentals like theory, and basic chords. I think I have to ability to be a lot better but I don't know where to start. Any tips for a guy that knows how to play but doesn't know what to play?
Dakota Kavic learn the circle of fifths, memorize every single note on the neck, learn chords, learn all your triads etc. it really depends on what exactly your trying to get out of theory
This is really inspiring, I'm a vocalist who takes a lot of influence from you guys. This reminded me of how important it is for me to continue in choir and music composition in college to make as powerful of music as you. Thank you for making and explaining awe inspiring art, I'm so glad I got to see Rings live and will have to again. This album is gonna be so good!
Miles, you are absolutely incredible man. Honestly, I don't know dick about theory ( despite being pretty good at playing ) but it's awesome to see that you speak theory so fluently, and never stumble as to the perfect explanation of what's going on. And I needn't say anything about your playing ability. You truly amaze me. Thanks for the video, and best of luck on summer slaughter. I hope to see you guys again.
All I've ever done is just listen to Rings' music... But after watching this I have gained a lot of respect for Miles and anyone else in the band who writes too! Very musical and very hardcore. I love it!
No problem, keep making sick ass music! I'll definitely be picking up a copy of the new record! I wish the boys well on their new record label and I hope they have a BLAST playing for Nuclear Blast!
As a drummer who is watching this just because Rings of Saturn is dope, but also as a music major it's nice to see you explain the theory behind everything. And while I don't fully grasp everything mentioned (tritones, diatonic to name a few things) it's still nice to see. Can't wait for the album!
this forreal has got to be the best guitar play through/ lesson I've ever watched!! love how you explained the writing and theory process! plus you're one of my favorite guitarists of all time!
Could you do more of these lessons please? This was incredibly helpful and I love how you spoke about the actual theory behind everything. It really shows your musical knowledge and comprehension of the technicalities in your riffs and leads.
Very professional and thorough! And it was pretty legit that you filmed this in essentially one take-just goes to show you how seasoned you are as a player! Stoked for the album man 😃
Thanks for this! It's really cool that you went through everything like this. So much appreciation. I can't wait to hear new content from you. I'm glad you made the decision to leave rings of Saturn too. Lucas took away too much of your credit that you clearly deserve. I saw you live a couple years back and you put your soul into the show, but he kept missing notes. You're amazing man.
I'm really liking your approach to the songwriting for the new album, especially with the new song mainly revolving around certain chords (especially A minor); it helps to establish whatever mood that you're aiming for with that song.
Mega respect for this, seriously. I haven't seen many video lessons where people have the theory knowledge to back up their own music, it's usually just "so yeah you play this then this then this then back to that... y'know, because it sounds cool... what is it? hell if I know."great lesson, now all I need is an 8-string...
took me 2 hours to watch a 16 minute video XD I'm so glad I had those 2 lessons about theory with you before I watched this! I was actually able to understand this and what you taught me more than I thought I would. Thanks for being such a sick teacher!
Very informative. It's a treat to get a lesson from a lefty for once. A shame I can't afford a good 8-string, gotta try to nail this on my 7 strings...
Youre the best Miles! Met you in Michigan earlier this year and you are one of the nicest guys ever. This was a badass video and cant wait to see more! Can only assume its tough to make these but they are super impressive and helpful. 😃🤘
just came here for the neoclassical tapping sequence haha. Honestly no theory here just been finding patterns by ear for 14 years and the way he explained this was probably the most i have learned about theory and actually understood in that entire time. I now want lessons from him on theory haha.
Inspirational! Great explanations! I love understanding the reasoning and common themes throughout songs. I wish I'd heard about you guys earlier, but, as I said, this is pushing me to challenge myself more and I can't thank you enough, for that.
This video is amazing, definitely going to reroute my focus to theory and take a few courses, Miles Dimitri Baker and Lucas Mann completely changed the metal guitar game and created a whole new genre. crazy stuff too bad I have a 7 string :( as a metal guitarist this totally raises my aspirations for my writing to new hights as does all of rings of saturn/ interloper with every new song, keep up the good work and thanks so much for being so cool and releasing this video Miles!
Dude thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I've been looking for some killer tech death songs to learn and will be using your video once I finish up involuntary doppelganger by Archspire.
holy shit dude that tip you gave about galloping (doing full alternative picking) was fcking gold man. It gets a little getting used to but I can already tell I can play stuff like that muuuuuuch tighter and faster :)
Nobody's gonna actually play this, scientists only watch this because they're trying to understand aliens and how they play full speed.
Dick Baguette best comment by far!!
Man I could totally play this song...you know, if I had an 8 string guitar.
and i dont know why scientists try ways to communicate with aliens while we're having an friendly alien dude sitting in front of us and teaching us about their music ?
I'm pretending i know wtf he's taking abooot
HE IS SO UNDERRATED, Check his solo album 'Emerge'!
Should also note, which I completely failed to mention, tuning is EAEADGBE.
I've been trying to find balance recently with my plain strings and curious what gauge's are your high E B and G? and do you have an extended scale like 26.5"?
I believe it's .009, .011, and .016 my scale length is 28" on this guitar.
why not EBEADGBE?
When you have the two A's and two E's down there you have extra low reinforced drop tuning options to play with. its sonic destruction.
EAEADGBE is basically just a really low six string
2:45
Miles: "I'll go ahead play it slowly for you"
Me: woah woah woah i thought you said slowly
Thanks who added 0.5 speed
"it's pretty simple" *starts tapping multiple strings*
Little do you all know I spent like 4 billion hours getting it down.
what a humble dude. u rock bro
Dude this is sick, not just for showing us the song but also for explaining the whole theory and writing ideas/process behind it, which is really interesting and has given me a lot of writing inspiration/ideas, thank you ! Interloperofficial .... Instructional dvd! You'd do excellent with that and I'd happily pony up the dough.
It takes a lot of skill to make something that's actually pretty simple sound complex, this video does a great job of showing that!
Proctor Productions there’s a reason we pay a ton to live in Cali. U of A is a great school tho

"I should say 'tapping finger,' we're not using our whole hand to tap."
Speak for yourself m8 *aggressively slaps guitar*
How about a guitar play through?
...of every song from the album :)
"Metal is just noise"
"Metal heads don't know any theory"
"Metal is trash music"
"Metal tabs are just 000 000 0000 11 000"
Think again sweetie
Daniel Campos sweaty*
Daniel Campos what ? Haha
Nunyo Biznes huh?
@Laguna Zancruz not as gay as the ones before it ;)
Those are usually said by TOTAL pussies
@@randomcultist398 well this guy sounds like a TOTAL dickhead

Totally dude! Didn't intend on sounding rude at all. Yeah, there's a lot of synth and a handful of nylon parts. Thanks again!
I know this comment is old as shit but I want to you to know I'm saving it because I love it
great breakdown, I feel embryonic is the best thus far. Looking forward to the new album!
Thanks for the support everyone! Hope you all enjoy the video! I do offer private lessons. Contact me @ Facebook.com/milesdimitribaker or instagram.com/milesdimitribaker
Interloperofficial I would take lessons from you but after this video I've decided to quit guitar and become a farmer.
What's the tuning though?
EAEADGBE!
Yesss man, thanks for covering the theory aspect of it too, not just showing the riffs!
I really liked the "theme and variation" thing you've got going on and will definitely try to apply it to improve my songwriting.
Cheers man!
Awesome!
Nice job Miles!
Richard Mauricio You're amazing too
Richard Mauricio hey Richard. I'm a sub and it's nice to see you here
:)

I love the fact that you also covered the theory part Miles, awesome lesson !!! Thank you very much, you are a great guy and musician !!!
Thanks!

Miles is the Best. Period.
He has every idea of what hes talking about, and his calm voice makes it even better. I love this! :)
One of the most comprehensive and rewarding lessons from such a tough as nails band.
All I've ever done is just listen to Rings' music... But after watching this I have gained a lot of respect for Miles and anyone else in the band who writes too! Very musical and very hardcore. I love it!
Thank you!
No problem, keep making sick ass music! I'll definitely be picking up a copy of the new record! I wish the boys well on their new record label and I hope they have a BLAST playing for Nuclear Blast!
Miles you are an unbelievable musician with unlimited potential. Already one of the best!👽
Thank you very much Miles! I like Rings of saturn music as well as their issues. You guys bring light in this dark world of deception.
Bro you are the literal GOAT.
Epic fallout 3 reference in this comment.
Yo you're like the perfect combination between chill, smart, and dork, you're the fuckin coolest
There is no way I’m actually ever gonna play this, but mad props for actually explaining the harmonic construction of it
"Obviously I'm not tapping using using my whole hand" hahahah u made my day :D
One of the best lessons I’ve ever seen. The mix of the guitar lesson with explaining all the song writing is amazing!
Sending nothing but love to this beast
I can’t be the only one who loves seeing him so happy explaining the song.
I loved this so much. I also really appreciate how knowledgeable he is about his instrument.
14:54 "I just forgot how to play guitar"
It's quite refreshing to see a person in these sort of genres actually know what he/she's doing.
During the pre-breakdown section, your picking hand is so good it sounds like a marching snare.
Miles ur a fuking beastt breh i want to see the band so fricken bad
12:39 tapping section
miles i fucking love u. just because of that black mesa t shirt.
Half life life.
Stoked for the album man 😃
GIDIM HELL YEAH
Such an in-depth tutorial. Would LOVE to see a similar video for Seized and Devoured!
I'm really impressed with how much theory this guy knows, awesome lesson!
But he cant play smoke on the water
This was so insightful and the detail could not be any better, cheers to a great teacher dog.
As someone who is very inclined to the theory analysis of music, this has made me rock hard. Love you xox
Thanks for taking the time to make this and post it for free, very cool stuff.
I'm really liking your approach to the songwriting for the new album, especially with the new song mainly revolving around certain chords (especially A minor); it helps to establish whatever mood that you're aiming for with that song.
I love the humorous antics you provide c: very resourceful
"we have c# which it chromatic to the key we are in but it sounds cool so who cares" lool
Damn straight.
That part made me laugh, it was great in the context of all the theory being explained.
*_There is a reason it is called music "theory!"_*
Thank you! You can do this on a 7. Looking at the notes, not the amount of strings. Just a few things will be up at the octave.
took me 2 hours to watch a 16 minute video XD I'm so glad I had those 2 lessons about theory with you before I watched this! I was actually able to understand this and what you taught me more than I thought I would. Thanks for being such a sick teacher!
i went back and listened to Inadequate after watching the video and had a new found respect for it
These are the coolest videos ever. Please keep doing these. I love the music and I always learn so much.
Amazing lesson. Please covering more lessons like this with your playing and how you apply theory like modulation, progression etc . thanks a lot
What I would give to have Miles teach The Macrocosm...
Very informative. It's a treat to get a lesson from a lefty for once. A shame I can't afford a good 8-string, gotta try to nail this on my 7 strings...
Holy shit man, you are a natural teacher.
Even I ( a man that sucks at music theory ) was able to understand.
You are an incredible teacher.
great video... and great description... love the theory breakdown... and thanks for being so laid back at the emerson show in naptown...
killer video, such a dude
Thanks!
This guy is really inspiring and really fucking mind blowingly talented
Youre the best Miles! Met you in Michigan earlier this year and you are one of the nicest guys ever. This was a badass video and cant wait to see more! Can only assume its tough to make these but they are super impressive and helpful. 😃🤘
Thanks for the run through, late 90's bus driver !
its neat that nobody doubts your playing skill
Dude THIS is how to teach theory to aspiring tech death guitarists. I hit subscribe so fast
just came here for the neoclassical tapping sequence haha.
Honestly no theory here just been finding patterns by ear for 14 years and the way he explained this was probably the most i have learned about theory and actually understood in that entire time. I now want lessons from him on theory haha.
Thanks a bunch man! Hit me up on Instagram if you're interested! :)
I need more of these videos
It was really awesome. Please make more videos like these
Wow Miles, it's crazy now that I'm actually understanding some of your theory talk. 🎉😊
That acoustic guitar riff is so fucking beautiful
Inspirational! Great explanations! I love understanding the reasoning and common themes throughout songs. I wish I'd heard about you guys earlier, but, as I said, this is pushing me to challenge myself more and I can't thank you enough, for that.
I love the theory behind this man! I always love seeing the creative process so thank you for explaining, and the album totally kicks ass \m/
My man!
Dude yesssss, thanks so much for making this, can't wait for the new RoS and Interloper stuff
This was incredible!
Yes! Love videos like this! Thanks Miles :D Can't wait for the new album \m/
do i need to be left-handed in order to play this?
Yes
Laucha Sve no you got to be good enough
Yes
it makes my happy how he smiles the entire video!! xD
Thanks Miles! You are awesome bro!
My pleasure!
Dude thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I've been looking for some killer tech death songs to learn and will be using your video once I finish up involuntary doppelganger by Archspire.
The tabs made it look so hard but the way u explained it made it easier
This song has been challenging to learn but it's a great tab and great song
This is awesome man, if there will be more I will definitely watch!
Dude u made a beautiful song with an amazing run-through thnx for creating some of the best filth to ever be heard
Awesome lesson Miles! Thanks!
Can't say I'm a fan of the band at all, but very impressive breakdown of your music sir. Great stuff, good learning experience.
Haven't stopped listening to the song since it dropped.
More of this please.
Nice work! I love how you discuss the theory
God he is such a fantastic guitar player ;-;
holy shit dude that tip you gave about galloping (doing full alternative picking) was fcking gold man. It gets a little getting used to but I can already tell I can play stuff like that muuuuuuch tighter and faster :)
Damn he's a super nice dude.
I haven't gotten into a band as much as you dudes since I first heard cannibal corpse. Keep up the good music and visit us again in Buffalo NY
Rings of saturn is awesome!
Pro tip bro, you got locking tuners. your strings don't even need to wrap around once/twice. Helps with tuning stability.
Hank Hill Hello Hank
Hank Hill “pro tip” that’s hilarious
Hank do you need propane our grill broke and now we're using charcoal and lighter fluid
PROPAIIIIINNN!!!
really cool explanation, I love the interloper stuff.
the g#maj still sounds nice/ refreshing!
Sneak attack #7.
Thanks Miles! Insightful
Thanks for sharing this Miles, love that you're sharing some of the theory logic behind what you're writing! :D
