Angela, I was thinking while you were listening to this that I wished you were hearing the original first. Contrary to what some people are saying, there was NO orchestra on the original. The strings and other sounds were made by Mike Pinder (who isn't with them on this performance) on the Mellotron and the Harmonium. Plus they had Mike as a fourth harmony voice. The driving force of the album version is the haunting (and unique for the time) guitar playing of Justin Hayward. Ray Thomas's flute is also more pronounced in the original version. While the orchestra adds a majestic element to this live performance, I think it almost overwhelms the natural beauty of the original. What makes this band unique is that they created their own genre of music that mixed rock, using a backup orchestra with poetry, in a series of 'themed' concept ALBUMS from 1967 to the 1980's, and with deep mystical lyrics that touches both heart and mind. I began the trip down The Moody Blues 'rabbit hole' of those seven albums (in surround sound) four months ago. This song became the fave of my wife, who sadly died of a heart attack one month ago. This song gives me the strength to go on without her.
Yep, it was the era of great musical groups and then along came ELO and others. What a period to be alive back in those days where we lived for music and not wars. Unfortunately, we will never see that period ever again but, it’s wonderful today to see the young generation starting to relate to this, as they say, old time music.

You are 100% right. You need to go to the original albums especially since they are really "concept" albums where like Pink Floyd, one song flows into the next. Try Days of Future Past or Seventh Sojourn. Your patience with this was very admirable.
I agree. I always prefer starting with the studio version of any song. This is especially true here. To be honest, this song is better in the studio. It’s a rather quiet intimate song that the orchestra overwhelms a bit. I recommend going back in a few weeks and do a reaction to the original. It’s such a great song that nobody will complain.

Yeah, Angela, Moody Blues had a lot of big, complex tunes. Their album “Days of Future Passed” is classic, with many great songs. London Philharmonic if I recall, was a part of most of the tracks. Good stuff, but yeah, you kinda had to be there. Or dig into more of them to pick up their whole vibe. Thanks!!
I agree with you on it was a great performance. The original was less orchestral from memory as this performance was some time after the original recorded one. The orchestra makes it more grand and this perhaps lends itself to a live performance, but I think I prefer the original. Still a beautiful song-Colin Ward

Moreover, live versions are often quite different from the originals, some as good and some not as good. With the Moodies, there's so much going on on that stage, it's hard to find the song in there - somewhere, and I like the bombastic Moodies, and maybe this wasn't one of their best songs to begin with.
If memory serves, there's no orchestra on the LP. You could take this version on its own, or find the original and check it out if you need a point of reference; I think I get what you're saying and wouldn't argue with it. The Moodies often had an orchestra behind them for live performances; from this performance at the Royal Albert Hall, "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," "Tuesday Afternoon" (which opens the concert), or "Nights in White Satin" are favorites of mine, though for the latter I do prefer the original version as the orchestra here plays its final part at a slower tempo than on the LP.
They have a few good songs, but my 2 favorite tunes by them are Tuesday Afternoon & Nights In White Satin! This tune is very thought provoking and introspective! Everything is strange and unfamiliar when you think about it! I'll stop before I get carried away! Until Monday I guess, bye!
The original studio version is not as orchestrated. Not to mention the group was 30 yrs younger then. More harmonies in original version vs solo parts in live version. JMO.

Just listen to their early albums as an album by yourself. Don't react on this channel. You can react to the live performances but their albums were mostly theme based. Hope you can enjoy their work as I did many decades ago.
Angela, take a moment and listen to the original. The orchestra is nice, the only down side I saw in this performance is that John's voice (the first singer) hasn't held up as well as Justin's so he was taking pauses instead of blending into Justin's parts.
Too much analysing... just enjoy it? Try the same gig 'Nights in White Satin'. Bigger orchestral backing on that too, I preferred it to the original. They were the fathers of symphonic prog rock.
Generally I prefer this live concert version of their songs, but not this one. The chorus just seems too inconsistent, and the vocals don't come through as much as the studio version, (in the chorus).
Interesting, I also thought ‘72 was too early, but ‘82 is definitely too late. I had this LP on vinyl in grad school, (1976-77) But Google indeed says it was released in ‘72. In 72-73 I was listening to many of the other Moody albums: Threshold, Children’s Children, Lost Chord, and Future Passed. Life IS strange, because I woulda swore Seventh Sojourn wasn’t around then.
