- In Lord of the Rings, Gimli, son of Glóin, is remembered as a Dwarf of great courage and steadfast loyalty. Though his kin had a long-standing feud with the Elves, Gimli fought alongside them in the War of the Ring against Sauron, and proved a valuable ally to the Fellowship of the Ring.
Following the War's end, Gimli led a group of his people to the Glittering Caves, which lay beyond Helm's Deep. There, he became the first Lord of the Glittering Caves, overseeing the rebuilding of much of the damage done during the War in both Gondor and Rohan.
Gimli's thirst for adventure led him to journey with Legolas into the West, where he became the first Dwarf to visit the Undying Lands. Gimli went not only because of his great friendship with Legolas but also out of desire to see again the beauty of Galadriel.

Gimli and Legolas' friendship builds like a real life enemy-to-friend situation that had a clear evolution and growth. Better yet, after LOTR, Gimli ends his time in Middle Earth by heading to the Undying Lands with Legolas. Their bond lasted until the end, AND beyond! Top tier
Gimli and Legolas even brokered a peace treaty between the Wood Elves and the Dwarves of Helm's Deep, reconciling the grudge that went all the way back to the Battle of the Five Armies.

In my head gimli and Legolas show up at the dagor dagorath to fight Morgoth with the Valar.
the need for “softening Sauron” and “sympathetic villain story” to make him more likeable is kinda funny, because (at least in my opinion) when you look at The Silmarillion, he is actually a likeable character, or I mean, not likeable as in good but that, you can like him AS the villain, as the evil guy.
