      I think his talent for versatility (which itself I find overrated) left him lacking in depth. • @steerpike66
      @steerpike66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No he's not. Hopkins is very self-effacing and denigrates his talents all the time: he says he's just a very lucky dilettante. Plus anybody who was recruited to the NT in the 60's and early 70's knew Olivier: he was running the place and it wasn't that big.If you got a job there, it was because he said so.

      I dont say he isnt a modest person. He is talented and very trained and I`m sure he is a desent person. I like many of his works. But sometimes when I watch a movie I see - it is Anthony Hopkins acting. Not a once I had that feeling about Gary Oldman.

    • @steerpike66
      @steerpike66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Most of what you've seen has been Hopkins' later period. He's a good deal less serious about performance than he used to be: he does his shouty thing and so forth. He was much more like Oldman when he was young. It's a bit like rock music: they get older and mellower and are content to parody themselves most of the time. The 'mercurial intensity' thing is for young men.
      I'd say his last totally *serious* period of acting was the three weepies 'The Remains of the Day', 'Shadowlands' and 'Howard's End'. There;s nothing caricatured or hammy about any of those performances. They are nuanced and expressive and technically flawless.

      Ok, this is interesting indeed. I definetely was talking about his late period and you gave me quite an information to think about. Now I feel I need to pay attention to his early years. Thank you very much for your answer.

      it might be linked to Hopkins' accent. Sounds a bit posh but he's extremely humble in interviews. Oldman in Dracula is as good as Hopkins in the Lambs. They are both exceptional ☺

    🤣 pretty good. Oldman is so talented. As much as DDL if you ask me. “The Darkest Hour” wasn’t my favorite Churchill movie but I am so glad he won Best Actor at the Academy Awards. He had only been nominated once before despite a couple of decades of very strong performances.
