Well done Peter! The breakdowns and issues do make a good video, and you have a cracking group of mates there. On my last ride my chain snapped, and also bent my front derailleur. I managed to fix/bodge it to get me home. Well done to your mate on the fixey. One of my Strava friends recently did a 24hr TT on a fixie. He did 664km !!!!

I arrived on the beach in the last of the darkness this year and whilst sunrise on the beach is a target for many I agree with Jimmy that twilight going into the sun coming up over the fields is indeed a very magical experience. Cycling can be a bit niche at times but the Dunwich Dynamo seems to bring people together no matter what you ride or or how you pace it. It is an amazing event and should be on every cyclist bucket list. Keep up the good work, great content.

A great record of this year's DD Peter... and I got both a bit part appearance and a shout out! In fact, the Steve who you were puncture-twins with is one of the mates I was riding with too; what are the chances? Nice to meet you, if only fleetingly, at last. My rear hub broke after leaving the White Horse so I had a pretty grim, very clunky, slipping drive train of a slog for the last 80km, but I did complete! More importantly, did I have a blast? 'Course I did😁👍.

The lack of sleep and frustration at getting a flat didn’t see me thinking (or listening!) straight! 🥴 Kudos to you for pushing through what sounds like it should have been a ride ending mechanical too and still managed to enjoy it. 💪🏻
Last DD I did, on the downhill run into Sudbury my saddle sudden came loose at 33mph. Mechanicals in the dark are always fun. Fortunately there's one or two helpful cyclists about that evening always offering to help.

The spirit of this ride, you could just fly yourself here, but a cheap old beater of a bike for around £50 and do it on that. Would be cheaper than shipping your bike over and no worry about damaging it en route. 😉 Really glad you enjoyed it though. 👌🏻
We used to ride much further than that overnight on single fixed and never thought it was going to be a struggle. This was in the 1960’s when most of us rode single fixed.

I don't know if you ride Audax but, when you do, and end up on Paris-Brest-Paris, you see people riding things that reset your understanding of what's difficult. A guy called Drew Buck is worth investigating. 200 miles a day for 4 days, on a 1900s vintage Single Speed that was way too big for him.
Actually riding an Audax last year with Peter and Jimmy was what inspired me to upgrade my Single Speed to the Condor Tempo. Veteran riders doing 3 x 100km days, fixed, into their 70s on beautiful Condors was a real inspiration. Miles over speed, journey over destination. Something to really aspire to.
Would love to do some more Audax and PBP (or even LEL) would be a dream once the kids are grown up. As Chris said above, the brief intro we had to Audax last year gave us a real eye opener in the beauty of the events. Can’t wait to do more. 💪🏻🌟
I bought a 1000 lumen 'Plazma' branded light from Planet X. It has 8 light intensity modes, with the dimmest lasting up to 80 hours! I tend to use setting 3 or 4, which seems bright enough for dimly lit roads and then briefly pump it up to 1 or 2 when I was on my own or in the depths of the countryside, with no other light around. So technically, Chris’s bike is single speed as opposed to fixed speed, meaning he can freewheel. The benefit of a fixie though is the lack of things to go wrong. No deraileurs, no shifters, just a single chainring and cog and some brakes. 👌🏻
@manwithnoname6580 😂 quadzilla! TBH, I couldn’t get on with my fixie when I tried riding it in Newcastle earlier ok the year but Chris tells me I have the wrong gearing. He rode his old Spesh Lancaster all over the winter though and you can definitely tell he’s stronger for it when he’s back on his road bike.
@@petertreadwayI ride fixed (although mine is a stunning Zeus pista so doesn’t go out in the rain) and it definitely improves your pedal stroke, smoothness. When riding in the city, it forces you to anticipate traffic better. You feel connected to the bike like you can’t on a bike with a freewheel. I also find it safer in the rain than on my rim brakes (discs probably safer again). Mine’s probably geared too big, but I just use it as strength training as I end up trying to get the same cadence as on my road bike. On my first ride with power meter pedals, I immediately got the Garmin “50/50 power split” and I put that down to riding fixed.
ngl 20 mph?! that's insanely fast for me struggling to do 25 kph on a regular after work ride. (My excuse is that they usually include 500+ m of elev. ;) )

My spare room is free😂 I started doing the Peak District on an e-bike, was nice but was always concerned about running out of battery (& having to pedal a 27kg e-bike..) so there was a fair bit of management on longer rides, now I just take the road bike, set my power target to 300/350watts on climbs and let the speed be whatever. I do enjoy it a lot more not stressing about the battery going flat.. I still ride my e-bike though, great zone 2 bike!

How did you keep your lights going? Did you use dynamos? My battery lights tend to only last about 3hrs

Honestly, 20mph is very fast for us too. Were much more ‘14mph party pace’ most of the time. We had help from a massive headwind that night though. 💪🏻
