I completely agree. I’ve stopped watching many TH-camrs that focus on gear. I was thinking latest and greatest was what I wanted and ended missing the gear I was using and went back to my ‘old’ Fuji gear. Love my xpro2 and my x-A1. Still makes incredible images.

The problem I run into is that the only "communities" I've ever seen is "join our photo walk for $49.99" because of course the person running some group is always shilling for $$. Everyone tries to turn every hobby into a money-making business, and I despise this gig economy stuff. Photography is bigger than ever, but it's more soulless than it's ever been.
I have had people say "wow you're good, you could make a lot of money..." stop. No. I don't want to make money doing this. I don't think money destroys the artist, but....maybe it does a little bit. I do this purely for passion. I don't ever want to make a dime from it.

I've never unsubbed to so many channels in a day. These "shills" are coming after their viewers in the comment sections...ridiculous. "Trust me bro, it's a fun camera to use" is not a good sales strategy. I Pretty much only watch Disney vloggers now (don't judge me), and I do photography/TH-cam my way, I've been way happier and more productive.

I bought my Olympus cameras simply because I grew up using my dad’s old OM-1. I liked the look and feel of them and they bring back memories. I didn’t even know Olympus were crop sensor cameras. Haha. The only reason that has mattered is because I fell for the full frame sensor snobbery at bit. Funny thing is that when I’m editing the photos, they look as good as I could want, even with heavy crops. Contentment with your camera sure brings the fun back.

I’m right there with you on this. I would love to find a local group to just hang out and talk about photography and share photos. The one thing I struggle with (at least locally) so many photographers around here are pompous asses and gate keepers and don’t want to communicate with others because of your gear, or thinking they are too good for you. It really defeats the purpose of the hobby. I no longer share much of my photography on Instagram because the algorithm has blocked so much from being shown unless it’s something very specific. I still love looking on the explore page for photography I want to see (when I can actually find it)

Completely agree with this. I think especially for TH-cam, it boils down to people wanting to do it for money. So they create videos that are going to facilitate that. Or they create videos even though they don't feel like it that day or aren't actually interested in that topic. Then we just end up surrounded by videos that don't feel genuine. Your honesty (which I accredit partly to the fact this is not a job for you) is a lot of the reason I keep watching, regardless of the topic.

Your point about gear and what most of us really need is spot on. I’ve been through the mirrorless options from most manufacturers, including the Leica Q2, chasing that perfect solution. Recently I landed on a Fuji X-H2 thinking that would be it. It still left me cold. On a whim I purchased an old OMD em5 and a 25mm 1.8 and it’s perfect. Sure I can tell the files apart from that and the Fuji , but the difference is not that great.

I have decided to focus more on the type of photography I like and find a way to cope with slower growth. I think many TH-camrs think the latest gear is what makes a good photographer. My own experience has proven to me that time, experience, and practice is what really makes the difference.

And like you said, they all need to be more honest but can't because they are either being paid or they are being given these products to be reviewed so they feel they can't say nothing bad about it... the S9 is lacking in many areas, yet people praised it more than the ZF smh..Thanks for talking about this.

I think what's happening is the increasing commercialization of TH-cam. Look at the number of ads before and during a video. And the constant pop-ups about your use of ad blockers. The camera manufacturers have realized that TH-cam is the best place for targeting their audience, and that's where their advertising budget is going. The more money that gets injected, the more tempting it is to play ball with them. You just wouldn't get invited back to Japan if you slammed one of Lumix's cameras. Why would they spend money on negative reviews? All this is not limited to photographic sites, but I think this is a factor in what you're observing. My take? Take it all with a grain of salt and realize most camera reviews now are hyperbolic praise.

I was reflecting this morning and thinking...the most important thing in photography is recording a thing. A record of something happening. What else is photography? Everything else can be argued ad nauseum. It's whatever you want to do, whatever inspires you. As you said, any camera will pretty much do it at this point. I think we're just living through the double edged sword of technology. This is new and we'll get through the megapixel/evf resolution/sensor/camera size race and back to showing what we've documented and why it's important to us. Until then, I encourage people to just document what they care about. Make prints, videos, social media posts, books. Ask yourself why it matters to you. When we look back at the prints in 40 years (if we're lucky) we'll be glad we just took the damn picture.

In terms of finding a photography community, no company is going to do that for us. I think that has to come from the people that are passionate about photography. It's not just photography that's in crisis here, see the book "Bowling Alone". It started when people handed over the reins to the "communities" they identified with to companies and large organizations. For all those lacking that feeling of a community, I'd encourage them to put themselves out there and organize a local photo walk, or a meet-up at a coffee shop or library. It doesn't actually take much work to get these things started. They usually start small, but that's what most people want, just a few people to share their hobby with.

The S9 doesn't really offer me anything except the LUTS capability. but the LUTS capability should be something that could be added to any camera that can shoot RAW. Hi Eric, I liked your perspective. A lot of channels wrongly assume we either aspire to be pro or are complete novices. It’s all got a bit tedious. The shills want early access to gear for ego trips and views - usually the ones trying to sell you web site builders, luts or a hoodie with an embarrassing slogan on that my friends and family wouldn’t be seen dead with me wearing - I love X trans or Raw til I die type BS. I am leaning more to the philosophy and personal angle - just like you with family & work committments. We should get pleasure out of photography, not feel insecure or overwhelmed with stuff that serves no purpose other than the creation of debt and anxieties about how others might see us.

Disclaimer: I only stumbled across this video thanks to TH-cam's algorithmic suggestions over in the sidebar (I'd earlier been watching another take on the S9 mess). That being said, well said!
To a certain degree, I think the current crisis is just the flow-down from the earlier digital photo / video crisis. Business for camera companies was awesome for years, then (like any other technology) digital cameras reached their technological plateau of maturity. Most cameras now sold are "good enough" for the vast majority of users, manufacturers are desperate to convince people they have to have new (incrementally better) gear, gear-centric "influencers" are getting similarly desperate to maintain a sense of their own value.
The best thing to do, as you stated, is to tune out the nonsense and go do some photography. Personally, I recommend looking for photo-related Meetup groups in your area. Sure, you'll run across some folks that turn their gear into a pissing contest ("my brand's better than your brand..."), but a lot of them are in the same boat as you -- just wanting a community to go out and make photos with.

Awesome, honest video, and I completely echo and concur. Everything now is pretty much gimmicky. 99% or more of my needs are met with my E-M5 mkii and E-M1 mkii (both bought lightly used).
From 2005 thru 2017 I bought 5 different digital cameras (Canon Powershot Pro-1, Rebel XT, Rebel T2i, 6D and 80D). I still have the Powershot, got the T2i wet (broke it), sold the other 3. My point is, since my 2017 purchase I have bought only 2 cameras. In the 2000's I would drool each year that a new model came out but not any more. I would rather spend my money on experiences than cameras with incremental returns. The money I spent on trips to far away places is far more rewarding than the latest greatest camera.

  • @CameraCombo

I didn't feel that the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Does the S9 deserve to be trashed? No, it's supposed to be a fun, small camera for smart phone users. The camera itself looks cool, but it lacks features that are considered "camera features". Most of that was mentioned in the reviews. However, the S9 also has some features that aren't in many other cameras. Yes, it's confusing, but I bet it'll sell because people like cool-looking cameras, regardless the features. I find G. Undone rather hypocritical in what he said too. He portrays himself as an expert in cameras, TH-cam setups, and now he's the "moral expert" too in regard to review. It's BS.

Size can definitely be an important feature of a product. The Walkman and iPod are two famous examples. @@ericrjennings Perhaps Panasonic wanted a clear demarcation between the S9 and the S5ii? That can be a dangerous game to play as competitors don’t care about S5ii sales and could offer something better than S9 for the same size and price. But right now, there is no alternative (at retail price). The GM1 ended with that model, the GH line is at GH6 with a GH7 expected. If the S9 finds a market there’ll be models in the future.

    Yup. Have a sub.
Every hobby is like this, especially when results and experiences can be anything like subjective.
I'm getting back into photography after a long hiatus and am looking at gear. And it's just disappointing how many comparisons and reviews are just sales pitches, often for junk tier gizmos with more style than substance.
I've been shooting on my somehow still functional D50 (from 2004, iirc) with spots on the sensor and 50/1.8. So far, the only feedback I've gotten is "it looks good to me".
99%, I'm going to end up buying a z5 and a new 50/1.8....and that might be it. In all the research I've done, nothing can tell me not to just go with what i know will work for the next 20 years. It so just seems like shilling for tech i don't care about. Especially video. I think I've taken a half dozen videos on my phone ever. It literally makes zero difference to me, and I'd honestly prefer if the camera didn't do it at all, especially if it was correspondingly cheaper.

I watched to the end apologies in advance for the long comment. I think some creators really need to consider where there loyalties should lie. I understand anyone wanting to maintain and grow relationships that help their business, but your followers or fanbase are ultimately what will make or break you. Fans will forgive the occasional poor video, misspelling or error. A camera company will likely not as Gerald Undone said of Lumix. So it's a poor strategy to gaslight or even outright criticise your followers, many of whom probably followed you before you were a big shot press day person. Especially in this case when the S9 is objectively a poor camera by 2024 standards.
But many reviewers have called fans ignorant "you don't understand" or worse straw man anyone who disagrees as having a bad attitude. I got called a "toxic hater" & "camera snob" for not liking the S9 I didn't use bad language, insult any person or object I just said it was an objectively flawed camera, for context I spent this past week shooting (and enjoying) a Nikon J1 so I'm not a very good camera snob.

A few thoughts, but at a high level I'm not so sure it's in a crisis. I think people need to realign their expectations. Right now what I see is more and more people getting an interest in photography, learning about it, and having fun with it. Just because it's hard to get a ton of likes on instagram doesn't mean that your photography isn't having a positive impact. To the people who you matter to, your photography will likely be greatly appreciated. For example, my family doesn't care that I'm using an X-T5 or an OM-1 (35mm) or whatever, but the fact that I have fun going out and using those cameras results in them getting more photos of my life, my daughter's life etc. Our impact doesn't have to be far reaching to be important. It can also be a therapeutic hobby as it's a great excuse to just get outside and go somewhere fun, regardless of if the resulting photos are good or not. If you're trying to make a living out of photography, well, then maybe it's in a crisis lol.
As for gear, yeah the improvements are incremental at best. I think at this point manufacturers should make more cameras that are fun rather than just more and more capable. Just look at the x100v, people love it not because it's the most capable camera, but because it's fun to use. Imagine if we got a new Olympus Pen F or something. Would be awesome.
Projects are also a fun path to take. I've been getting more into photobooks as inspiration rather than content pumped out by youtubers. A great source for this is the photobooks subreddit. A lot of these wonderful and expensive books can be found for free at local libraries.

I enjoy a bit of gear talk myself but even gear talk doesn't have to be soulless. I think TH-camrs have for the most part become obsessed eith Full Frame and high ISO performance. DGMW, it's okay to want those things but I think the obsession really does a diservice to viewers and ordinary people. I'm a hobbyist photographer and shoot MFT, in my mind its almost completely unjustifiable to get into recent FF offerings unless you're a pro or exrremely wealthy and these youtubers make it seem like these other cameras aren't worth your time. This FF obsession is so bad that these pro youtube photographers saw the s9 and thought 'cool' because they have pro bodies and just treat a 1500 dollar camera as a toy. 1500 is a lot of money for most people and suggesting anyone spend 1500 on the s9 for their content creator journey is just crazy. It's a secondary camera for pros and a toy for rich pelple at best. No one trying to get into content creation, photography or videography should get it.

I think the main issue is that photography as a business is dead because of AI. AI will be how all commercial images will be produced no photographer needed. So taking pictures with a camera is now a hobby, done for pleasure and and socialising. Any camera is good enough so gear does not matter anymore., neither does resolution, lenses, autofocus, all irrelevant. We can all enjoy taking pictures for artistic and personal projects, share then with friends, enjoy each others images but that is all.

Most people who make TH-cam videos are chasing views. You can see it when you look through their videos. They make a video called "Why I'm switching from Nikon to Cannon", then 6 months later a video called "Why I'm switching from Cannon to Sony", then videos like "The pro's all have an 85mm", and another video called "You're not a real photographer if you don't have a 50mm". Then at the end they shout "Don't forget to buy my presets". I have a Nikon D3300 that I bought in 2015 and I still really enjoy it, never had any issues. I only really watch this channel, Thomas Heaton and fstoppers now.

Photography, at its root, is a privileged activity by a privileged class. What some photographers miss now that everyone has access to gear, editing and audience, is the exclusivity. It will be hard to build a community of like-minded photographers who enjoy the experience of photo-shooting without comparing with each other, and without critiquing each others' gear. What you are lamenting has a point, but I think this cynicism towards photography comes from the availability and prevalence of photography, and it's not necessarily a bad thing in the grand scheme of things.

When Gerald Undone made that video about the S5 he did nothing wrong. He did use the word weird and the problem doing that these companies have people that will get butt hurt really easily.
In his review he said it be better with phase detection. The problem with Sony sensors at that time Sony phase detection has artifacts just good Sony A7iii artifacts the title says A7ii but its the A7iii. Fuji and Olympus have this problem its when the light source is low and being snooted in.
Panasonic has a lot of people using their cameras behind the camera filmmakers and they can't take the risk of having those artifacts in their footage.
Sony from what I heard has fixed the phase detection artifacts issue with newer cameras like the OM-1.
Canon never had these problems with dual pixel technology.

@@ericrjenningsAn intelligent man knows when and how to say something. My problem with Gerard is that he made the video after he was not invited and then saw all the other video. He said many things contradicting and also seem angry. If he doesn’t care of the camera the. don’t make the video. Robin Wong said it in his blogspot. If you are not invited then you are not important. Please look the blogspot of Robin Wong. I agree 100% with him. It seems Gerard does not have experienced in media and communication or even training. Gordon Laing responded to him that he is a journalist for more then 30 years covering cameras for magazine before the creation of You Tube. He said he goes to all event as he is a journalist.
What do you not understand is that this guys who went to the event and many has like the camera. Problems is that those we see only specs does not understand this camera is made to a target audience who uses TikTok, Instagram or other social media. One reviewer came back with the S9 and his wife owns a restaurant and used the S9 and made videos for TikTok and Instagram. After that he asked his wife did you mis a viewfinder? She replied to him, what is a viewfinder? Hahahaha. He immediately understood for whom this camera was created. Another You Tuber, his wife also used the S9 and he asked her why she doesn’t use the S5II which was a better camera. She replied to him that that camera has to much confusing dials. Immediately he understood for whom this camera is made.
All of this reviewers said that they found the camera was real fun to use and that in many times they didn’t have fun with . After that they understood that this camera is not for the professional user but a camera to make video and still images to exchange fast to social media.
As one reviewer said it, if you don’t like that we like this camera don’t hate us for like it.

Casey Niestat 101 - used TH-cam to propel his career, not to be his career.
Enjoy Geralds content, but this debacle is ...dumb.
**WTF did nobody make this much noise when that company said to not disclose it as sponsored!!!**
Gerald got his priorities messed up, that didnt make his radar but The S9 videos got him all fired up...BFS
The camera community is one of the worst 😅
