    William Cowper is proof that a Christian can be used by God even when plagued by doubts and anxiety. When very young, he lost his mother and often struggled with depression. God worked through him as he teamed up with William Wilberforce and John Newton to abolish slavery in Britain. He was also gifted as a poet and songwriter. His hymn, There is a Fountain Filled with Blood, reminds us of the great sacrifice paid by our Savior, and the forgiveness He offers.

    LYRICS:
    There is a fountain filled with blood,
    Drawn from Immanuel’s veins,
    And sinners plunged beneath that flood
    Lose all their guilty stains:
    Lose all their guilty stains,
    Lose all their guilty stains;
    And sinners plunged beneath that flood
    Lose all their guilty stains.
    The dying thief rejoiced to see
    That fountain in His day;
    And there have I, though vile as he,
    Washed all my sins away:
    Washed all my sins away,
    Washed all my sins away;
    And there have I, though vile as he,
    Washed all my sins away.
    Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
    Shall never lose its pow’r,
    Till all the ransomed church of God
    Are safe, to sin no more:
    Are safe, to sin no more,
    Are safe, to sin no more;
    Till all the ransomed church of God
    Are safe, to sin no more.
    E’er since by faith I saw the stream
    Thy flowing wounds supply,
    Redeeming love has been my theme,
    And shall be till I die:
    And shall be till I die,
    And shall be till I die;
    Redeeming love has been my theme,
    And shall be till I die.
    When this poor, lisping, stamm’ring tongue
    Lies silent in the grave,
    Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
    I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save:
    I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save,
    I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save;
    Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
    I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save.

    How beautiful. I love these wonderful songs - the so-called songs of today are spiritless and void of any doctrine or theology..or as the Word says -vain repetitions...extremely troubling.
    Thank you for giving the stories which birthed these precious songs.

      Sadly, that can be the case. There are many truly inspired songwriters today and we thank the Lord for their continued work.

    One of the greatest hymns of all times! The Author's life story tells us that the Precious blood of Christ can reach in the darkness and gloom of life, and REDEEM our lives from the devil and destruction!!!

      Amen! Too little is spoken today of the blood that cleanses us from sin. It is not without the shedding of blood that sin can be forgiven. Praise God that He was willing to do that for us.

    Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

    It is definitely one of my most favorite songs of all time. Personally I like it even better than Amazing Grace.

    Thankyou for covering this Hymn story. It means so much to me, because I was so lost, and was saved in prison. And his story is truly amazing! It really touched me.
    Look what GOD did in his life, and thru him. Amazing! Our SAVIOR is so beautiful. "Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die." Thanks be to GOD, who justifies the ungodly, by faith (Romans 4:5).
