    1. Crying is not bad behaviour. It’s his only form of communication right now.
    2. Baby sign language, babies can start learning signs as early as 6months old. This can be invaluable, as you may think your baby may want to be picked up but he may also be asking for a totally different thing. I recommend reading the baby signing bible by Laura berg.
    I have worked with infants and toddlers for five years and I highly recommend learning ASL. It’s amazing to be able to connect with a baby through ASL and get insight into their needs, and lessen frustration for both parties. Key words to start: Milk, dog, mommy, daddy, more.
    I also recommend cherishing the holding more. Soon he’ll be running around and you’ll miss holding him.
    I recommend getting a lightweight carrier so you can still do housework/etc while carrying the little guy. Your “work” and “chores” are probably fascinating to him.

      I agree. Crying is a form of communicating a 'need'..... babies don't have the gift/curse of manipulation. Toddlers certainly can - but a crying baby/child needs something from you that they can't give/or do for themselves. Guys are designed differently than women - so typically a cry will go right to a mama's heart and likewise to a dads' ears :)

      In the meantime you may know this, but just for the record: mamas can hear the difference between the reasons of the crying: discomfort, hurt, ennoyment, borness, hunger, lack of attention.
      As I see Sutten has a good dayly schedules, so you can predict or prevent some crying as well.
      Now you have two babies, so Nate, just ask Sutton to translate :)
      And remember me, when the little guys pass year 10, it will be your turn to translate :D

    • @mmpjuly291
      @mmpjuly291 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      macprincess2 Hi! I hope you’re well.
      So when it comes to marriage, the basic cause for unhappiness is unfulfilled expectations. Prior and during marriage, a wife usually has a list of expectations for her husband because she feels like he is suppose to do certain things. If he fulfills the expectations, everything is fine. But if he fails to fulfill some of them, the wife becomes hurt and disappointed. In reality, this makes the husband a prisoner of his wife’s expectations. In response, the husband will tend to do all he can to reduce the number of expectations his wife has for him. He prefers her to expect as little as possible so that he can go beyond her expectations and enjoy her admiration. It is a wise wife who will give all her expectations to God instead of giving them to her husband. By giving them to God, she frees God to work through her husband to meet her needs. She must learn to trust God in such a way, while not getting in the way of God’s lessons to her husband. And she then can also say with confidence, that her expectations are met by God (Psalm 62:5) and prevents gratitude for her husband from diminishing. Does this make sense? Please feel free to come on over to our channel every once in a while to say hi or if you have any questions. My husband and I will be posting videos concerning deep marital concerns and their biblical solutions.

    Babies don’t understand bad behaviour they cry for a very good reason either being; hungry, tired, need changing or comfort, they are babies for a very short time. Sutton go with your natural motherly instinct and comfort your baby, meet his needs. I give you this message from a health practitioner and mother of 2 teenagers. There will be plenty of time to deal with behaviour when they are older. Xx

    • @joettecollins3396
      @joettecollins3396 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree. Babies become more secure and content when they are responded to quickly. It concerns me that expressing their need is thought of as "bad behavior". They are communicating in the only way that they are able. I agree with the encouragement to trust your motherly instincts, Sutton. Oak will be a much more secure, happy baby when he is confident of your attentiveness and care. I really enjoy your videos and am a mother of three and grandmother of three.

    • @isabelpalmer5941
      @isabelpalmer5941 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely I was about to type the same thing. Some men get bothered by it because they are sometimes typically more selfish and find that it interupts their selfish needs, and then find problem with it. If the child is making a fussing noise or crying they want love or need attention for one very good and valid reason or another- pay attention and be selfless enough to care and to let God use you to meet their needs. How would you feel if you couldn't talk to express how you are feeling and what you need, it would probably be a frequent fuss from you too just to get someone's attention. Imagine having an itch or stomach ache and not being able to itch it yourself because you don't understand how to yet etc. Just start placing yourself into someone else's shoes and you will suddenly have compassion and empathy. When you're too focused on yourself- narcissism for example- you lack empathy and find meeting others' needs as a burden to you.

    I love your message of Jesus in every show. My husband died almost 4 years ago. He was disabled, so we were constant companions for 37 of our almost 46 years of marriage. One thing I learned early on is, never expect anything from each other, but be grateful for all you get from each other. May God continue to bless you, your marriage and your son and future children to come. Keep smiling and laughing. It will get you through the hard times.

    Hi, I’m a preschool teacher/child development major and I wanted to give you some ideas to help Oaklan! I’m not a mom so you may alter this because as a mom/dad you know your child best!
    1. When he cries pick him up but just for a minute or so. Gradually decrease the amount of time you “comfort” him. When you sit him down encourage him to play with a toy independently.
    2. Eventually, you may be able to get to a place where you don’t pick him up at all. Instead, say simple things like “it’s okay Oaklan” and then simply go back to what you’re doing.
    The goal is never to ignore but to foster independence! It may feel like you’re hurting him by not holding him in the moment but you are equipping him to be emotionally independent in the long run!

    • @nateandsutton

    • @GoodSportsPTC
      @GoodSportsPTC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nateandsutton That "makes sense" only if you want to hold him less. He is a young infant. He needs his parents to respond to his needs, to develop a sense of security. Crying is communication in a baby this young! It is NOT bad behavior and he does not yet have the capacity to manipulate you! Enjoy him. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty about responding to his cries. Follow your instincts and ask God, - not your You Tube audience - for the answers to these questions. But you knew that. You are a terrific young couple!

    • @lc2077
      @lc2077 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    About the question for Oaklan. You have to wait like 3 minutes before picking him up. And listen to the sound. In every crie there is a different. When he has pain, when he is bord, when he is hungry...but if you pick him up to fast you never know what it is. If he is bord...try to get him out of it by talking ore singing. Try to give him something to play with. So he learns to keep himself busy. Let the reword be picking him up if he is good for a half our. And pick him up in a pattern....so he can feel himself how long things take. Like if you cook...during the cooking not pick him up when you know the crying from bordem...try to let him know with your voice...the tone of your voice that he is good. That helped me.

    Sorry this is long but I totally get what your saying about Oaklan..I felt the same way about giving too much attention to my babies(teenagers now) and spoiling them by running to get them every time they cried .it can get out of hand quickly..what I did was just made sure they were ok (belly full, clean diaper, rested ,safe , something to entertain them etc) and just kept an eye on them.. its ok to let them cry a little.. they learn how to soothe themselves and keep them selves content when they know they won’t be picked up every time they cry..they are super smart and learn quickly what they can and cannot get away with..(teenagers too 🤣)..

    I’ve been wanting to tell you how such an inspiration you both are to everyone, to me personally, on how I can be the best version of myself that would honor God. All my social media accounts are deactivated so I just decided to leave a comment here and pray and hope that you could read this even if this vid was posted several months already.
    Thank you, Nate and Sutton. Wow, can’t believe I’m crying while typing this. But really thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your videos - like how to be a better Christian that would impact your relationship with others esp when you start building your own family. My boyfriend and I are inspired and so happy to be watching a couple that has the same views as ours. You touched my life by having that fire in my heart to burn more in praising and honoring the Lord not just in handling romantic relationships but in all aspects.
    May God continually bless you! Thank you for being His instrument. May you both continue to inspire other people.

    Great question about rewarding unwanted behavior! I work with child psychology- At Oaklan’s age, I would advise you to respond to his crying as it’s his only way to communicate his needs right now and he is learning trust that you will respond when he cries. When he gets a little older and can talk/understand your words, then absolutely find that balance of not giving into crying to get what he wants because he has a new (and preferred) method of communication you want to encourage him to use. Just my two cents! I think you guys are fabulous!!

Thank you for choosing be vulnerable in these kinds of videos for the sake of helping others just as Jesus did! You two inspire me so much. I really do feel God speaking to me through the both of you as I am struggling right now. I’m sure many others see his light in you both as well. On another note, I do have a recommendation for your sweet baby Oaklan, I am a full time nanny to a sweet one year old baby girl. When she cries for attention-due to the learned pattern that she will be held. I will hold her for a few minutes and then try different to distract her with some music (I try different paces and beats to see if she likes a certain kind better) white noise, or a change of scenery! It’s all about trying different things to see what works. Don’t be hard on yourselves! It’s your first baby, you can never love a baby too much❤️

If the child learns, that it gets attention more for bad behavior or crying it will behave badly and cry more of the time. If it gets your love and attention even when it doesn't do anything special (like even just sitting around) it learns that it doesn't have to do anything to be loved and will behave normally most of the time.
    I hope this helps. And thank you so much for your videos, they are so great!!

      Good points. But a bit different for babies i think. a baby never cries for no reason and its not bad behavior when a baby cries.

    Oaklan is very young right now. When he cries, he is probably distressed, hungry or tired. At this age, when children cry, they need to be calmed, redirected. Don’t confuse a stress behaviour with misbehaviour. Misbehaviour would be when he throws stuff and you ask him not to. But you can definitely sooth your baby whenever he is upset because he needs you and that will build secure attachment as well. He will trust you both and know that he can rely on his parents. It will not spoil him.

    I like the question in the beginning! :) I am not a parent disclaimer: but I learned in my Human development and family studies class that you can never hold a baby too much. And crying is their only language. So although its probably hard roughing through the crying, you're not "spoiling" them if you choose to hold them when they cry. I think if nothing is wrong with them and they are crying and you don't want to hold them the whole time its probably not damaging. I also learned in the class that most mothers around the world (like in Africa) hold their babies majority of the time and it showed positive affects for their babies. (less separation anxiety etc.)Though, I am not a parent yet. Just something I found SO interesting because I wasn't raised this way and was always told that you could spoil babies. So I thought is was cool to learn this, that its actually really healthy to hold babies. but I think when kids are older it is important not to reward negative behavior. just sharing thoughts :) maybe parents have diff perspective or experiences.

    with my nieces and nephews what works best with the baby crying for attention thing, is staying connected but not giving in. what i mean by this is try to watch what they do before they start crying. look for oaks little signs that show he’s unhappy and pick him up then. that’ll teach him that crying doesn’t get you picked up. it takes patience and also when he does cry, go close to him, sit near by. it’s also okay to let a baby cry it out. i’m definitely one who believes in gentle parenting, but at the same time there is a bit of learning that has to happen so that you aren’t teaching him that crying gives you what you want

  • @Asencion12691

    For the crying and picking Oaklan up question, have you considered behavioral training or baby sign language? Since Oaklan is trying to get his needs met, teaching him to communicate his needs and reinforcing that over crying should help with decreasing crying. Babies are going to cry, but teaching him how to communicate his needs effectively and you showing him that you can meet those needs will help him in the long run.☺

    babies need you all of the time to feel secure, a baby cannot be bad, do not ever say that out loud, they are innocent, they feel everything so speak only kindness around them.
    Its called gentle parenting. When you leave them alone or turn away when they are crying
    they feel afraid and do not know how to tell you what they need. just be there, you will have a secure child
