55 years ago I left home (for the 1st time) to enlist in the USAF during the Vietnam War. There were incoming career field openings and a lot of incoming enlistee's who, like me, wanted to escape going to Nam as infantry cannon fodder. Sam, appreciate your work. I'm Ukrainian, have few questions, hope you will answer soon in next videos) 1. How "working" days are distributed? (Mean its 8 hours duty near aircraft during 5 days? Or there are some quantity hours which you must present at air force base? Tell about how much time, do you spend at "work", and how much time is free for you. You can go home or you stay at base on few days or weeks? 2. Salary. If it a military secret, tell approximately. And please show it after all taxes. And tell about salary-growth year after year. What does it depend on. 3. Is there any quantity of flying hours per month or year? 4. Contract. How the years are counted ? U can stay for 2,4,6 or more years? Tell about this.
Hey, I really like and enjoy your content! I would love if you made a video talking about the Air Force Special Warfare units, that'd be awesome! Tanks for everything :D
Sam - Great stuff. However, your presentation on Misconception Number 2 inspired me to write this response. I am a Vietnam Veteran. And while we did not have to man the trenches, we did get shot at. As a reminder, we are still in the military, wear uniforms, and follow the Geneva Convention Rules of War. The missiles, bullets, and mortars fired at us did not recognize that the recipients did not appreciate their arrival. In war, we are there to hurt people and break things in the most efficient way we can. If all we had to worry about was fixing airplanes, it wouldn't be necessary to learn all that military stuff. It's not just an 8 to 5 job.
Can you do a video on Security forces and pararescue? For pararescue, what’s the 2 years of training like? Do you get leave at any point during those 2 years? For security forces, what are the best ways to move up? What are the biggest misconceptions of security forces? Can you do airborne school in SF?
Hey, I used to be SF for 9 years. Since no one answered your question, ill do my best to help you. Keep in mind, SF primarily focuses on Security. It used to be two separated career fields, one focusing on security and the other focusing on law enforcement. However, in 1997, they were merged. Along with Law Enforcement, every base requires security to protect aircraft and some other AF assets. Keep in mind, security takes precedence over Law Enforcement. However, you'll do plenty of LE if that's what you want to do, but if you get assigned to a "nuke base" like Minot, you most likely will not do LE. The best way to move up in SF is to knock out your QC for your role asap. I think you got like 60 days upon arriving to your unit. CDCs were removed I think, so don't worry about that. Once you do that, volunteer for patrol, get as much certs you can and when you are knowledgeable and trust worthy, ask to get put on the desk (aka, BDOC). Once you get BDOC experience, you'll move up very fast. That's if you are assigned to a LE unit. If you are assigned at a Security Unit at a nuke base... I have no idea. Never been to one. For airborne, kind of yes. SF is a VERY versatile career field. Though, I think Airborne is an Army thing. So if you are attached to an Army unit, or close to an Army base and your unit has enough funding to send you to the school, sure... however, you might have to justify for going since budget is VERY limited and if there is no need for you to go, they aint gonna send you. If you are asking about being on planes, then yes. Google "Security forces Ravens" and see if that's what you are looking for. SF Ravens are attached to AMC bases. There is another one similar called SF DAGRE which is an AFSOC thing. Furthermore, I am not PJ, so if anyone can correct me if I'm wrong but from what I heard that after 6 months of Tech school, you qualify to start taking leave. How that works? I have no idea. But essentially, yes you can take leave during the 2 year pipeline for PJs. But I think you have to do the first 6 months first. If you have any more questions, let me know
In the air force you can move out of the dorms after 3 years. In the navy I believe you can move out after 4 years. In the army and marine corp you can't move out until E-6. It'll probably take you 8-12 years to make E-6, possibly longer. Crazy stuff.
Never served due to a disability. But I grew up in an Air Force town. Mather AFB on one end of town, McClellan AFB on the other(Sadly both are now closed). Travis AFB just about 45 minutes east, Beale 20-30 north. I have friends in all branches. While disciplined, I have been told Air Force Basic is a bit more relaxed than than the other branches. Relaxed being a relative term. I love the USAF!
I’m 33 and considering joining. Honestly basic was one of my anxieties about joining. But I’m planning to schedule a meeting with a recruiter because it’s time for a life change.

As a fmr ANG SSgt, what AFSC could you see Swayne enlist in, if he decided to serve AF Res or Air Nat'l Guard? It would be an ideal position for him, as his life relates to yours. As a current civ pilot, I don't see him interested being an AF officer, but w/COVID seemingly w/o end, Swayne in a reserve component AF/ANG job would give him a 2nd income & another uniform w/great benefits & status. We both know there's ideal positions 4 him if he choses a minimal commitment in USAFR (or ANG @ his home state) like Illinois where I served 6 yrs, had free BA/MA split education coverage & chances to deploy to exotic/fun locations such as the Pentagon/Andrews/etc (as I volunteered TDY to both & others on temp active duty during summer semesters off college. I just think it'd be a cute combination for him, in the capacity you know one another! ✈ 🛫 🌈 🌎 🌝.

The Air Force has it's own criminal and counterintelligence investigative agency called AFOSI. The first commander of AFOSI was the Deputy Director of the FBI. So AFOSI's roots are based on what the FBI was and still continues to be. We are eyes on the ground for the USAF and the DoD around the globe. A very small agency that typically works behind the scenes without much notoriety or acknowledgement
If you're not a pilot you might get the opportunity to hitch a ride on an air force plane at some point? I was enlisted in the Air Force for 22 years and "hitched a ride almost every day." There are plenty of enlisted Air Force jobs that fly. loadmasters, refuelers, airborne cryptologic linguists, flight chief, mission systems specialists, flight engineer, surveillance and reconnaissance specialists, you can even become a surveillance drone pilot if your enlisted.
I was in USMC and I have a huge debt to the USAF! All of you saved our ass in Afghanistan when we couldn’t get our Apaches in time and we called in for a close air strike and dayum you guys rescued our ass pinned down in the mountains with the Taliban having the high ground. It was a small special forces mission in the opening days of Operation Enduring Freedom and 2 jets streaked over and in a matter of seconds the tide turned and we hauled ass to a better position while the JDAM blew up their position and the smoke gave us enough time to regroup and complete the objectives. So thank you from the USMC this was just one of many times you’ve had our back! Your fighters thank the lord happen to be in the area because we couldn’t wait for an Apache.
Hey Sam this may be a dumb idea/question but I’m really curious about it. So I recently been interested in joining the Air Force, but with more research, the more I’d like to go to the Air Force academy. I’m a senior in high school and honestly I didn’t put my best efforts into school. I looked into the academy’s requirements and in order for me to reach them, I’d have to take classes like chemistry and physics. I have a gpa of 3.5. My question is could I go to community college for a year, take those classes, and raise my gpa? Would that be a smart idea? With the intent of applying to the academy and is that allowed?
Love your vids and I’ve picked up in the cool animations with the text and stuff soooooo I’m just wondering how you do them and what software you use again love your vids :)
Hey Sam started to watch videos more and more! I have a question though. I want Security Forces as my mos as this and TACP is really my only interest.. Problem is the Asvab seems to be difficult for me haha. What would you recommend a good routine for studying? Also if SF is in demand what is the likely chance I'll actually get that?
Hey Sam, I have a quick question about deployments. You said that they are about 6 months, but how often are those deployments? Do people get deployed often? (Anyone else can answer if they know, would appreciate it)
It all depends on what’s going on in the world and what the mission is as well as what your career field is. For me in public affairs it’s like once every 5 years or so. However, for other career fields you may deploy every 3 years.
AFSC (job) is a big factor on how often you deploy. Deployments can run short (30 days) or long (180 days). It all depends on the needs of the Air Force at that moment in time. Same with the ANG and AFRC.

I have a question , will I be able to bring my daughter to live with me during tech school ? If not will I be able to leave home on the weekends considering I’m interested in security forces and lackland is the base for tech school which is like 3 hours away. Also speaking of kids , will I be required to sign over my parental rights for enlisting. Army and navy told me I will have to . Don’t know how I feel about doing so
I have two years left to finish high school and I am seriously thinking about going to the air force but I am afraid of how my family will react or how they will treat me there😅
I've heard stories about enlisted airmen making it into the officers corps with flying duties in their late twenties into their early thirties. Is this a cost effective Air Force policy for let's say officers in the fast jet pipe?.
What’s the likelihood that my moral waiver will be accepted? I received a citation for petty theft under $100 back in June. I was scheduled for MEPS on September 1st and had to cancel because I wasn’t certain if it would keep me from enlisting as I don’t have a record as a result of the completion of my Plea with the court. I spoke to my recruiter and I have to file a waiver, which I can’t do until November 13th when my deferral period ends. I’m scared that I’ll be rejected and I figured I’d ask you, an Airman.
Honestly I think if you have a strong resume and good background besides this once incident you should have a good chance of getting that waiver accepted.
@@SamEckholm I wouldn’t say I have a strong resume exactly...I just recently graduated High School in May. I made a 77 on my ASVAB. This was the first time I ever did anything like that and I never plan to again. I’m scared my mistake will cost me my career. I’ve always wanted to be an airman not a criminal. I appreciate your feedback
So what if I’m a pilot with my commercial and multi ratings but I didn’t score high enough on the asvab. Does that mean I won’t get a pilot job in the Air Force?
It’s very similar. You work with your recruiter and depending on how well you score on your ASVAB in addition to what jobs are available you will know going in what you’re going to do

Can you do a video about your camera equipment, editing, etc.? Great stuff!
Your videos are so good! It feels like your the host of an Air Force tv show 😂
Sam - Great stuff.
If you have any more questions, let me know
Awesome video man!
Appreciate it!
In the air force you can move out of the dorms after 3 years. In the navy I believe you can move out after 4 years. In the army and marine corp you can't move out until E-6. It'll probably take you 8-12 years to make E-6, possibly longer. Crazy stuff.
That drill misconception is from the Marines
Yeah my dad has told me what marine boot camp was like for him and uhhhh let’s just say, that’s why I’m considering Air Force instead 💀😬
So did you do it?
My deployment to Bosnia was the only time I was REQUIRED to carry a firearm while on an aircraft.
Thank you for discussing “boot camp”. I appreciate it!

Hi, I live in Canada but I don’t really know how to go to RMC to be an officer. I want to be a pilot but I just can’t find what grades I need.
I think to become an airforce pilot you need 12 years of education , then you can apply with minimum 60% of grades in your subjects mainly physics
Thanks!
There are issues of health threatening assignments and crime. Contractor crime on the military and civilian side is rampant.
Can you make a video on how to apply/requirements for USAFA
th-cam.com/video/KqBNKlMwtnk/w-d-xo.html
Nah like the application process
Your fighters thank the lord happen to be in the area because we couldn’t wait for an Apache.
excellent 👏👏👏👏👏
I'm signing up after college can't wait
Heck yah!
Do you plan to enlist or commission? With a college degree commissioning as an officer would be an option, and there are a ton of opportunities there!

Yes you can! You just have to be younger than 23 to get into the Academy

There are some great online study materials for the ASVAB! SF has quite a few slots I believe
They are always in need of secfo so if you want you'll most likely get it
Hey Sam, I have a quick question about deployments.

How do you get that f22 model in the background?
@Sam Eckholm, I want to become a pilot in the Air-Force any tips?
Biggest factor regarding career fields is the need of the Air Force.
You deserve more subscribers, this is a million subscribers channel and you only have 12k.
Oh and I have a question: let’s say I don’t get selected as a pilot, can i get out of the Air Force or not? I mean do you sign a commitment of 10 years or what? Thanks
Hopefully one day we’ll get there! You’ll sign a commitment of 12 years if you’re a pilot, but if not, it’s like a 4 year minimum contract
@@SamEckholm oh well, thank you very much, I’m going to work very hard to get selected as one and good luck with your channel, your edits are amazing and idk the background makes the video very cool, you have a constant subscriber here ❤️
In order to be an officer, you HAVE to go through the Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, correct?
Thank you
I really want to join the Air Force to be a pilot and was wondering what I should do because I'm currently a junior in highschool and I should be close on credits to my associates degree out of my senior year because I tested high enough to qualify for early college and was wondering if I should wait to go in as a officer or if going in as enlisted
If you want to become a Pilot, please look into the Air Force Academy. A bulk of pilot slots go to Academy graduates. I’d work on getting your application started ASAP

Is there a special meaning about the black uniform because they look dope?
in 5 years i wil apply for The Airforce!
Don’t know how I feel about doing so
Its been 4 months. How is the USAF?
I have two years left to finish high school and I am seriously thinking about going to the air force but I am afraid of how my family will react or how they will treat me there😅
I really wanna fly a j35d one day lol. Sadly I am not Swedish but American jets are still very cool.
The Air force is Job oriented!
Hey Sam still a little confused on Job selection. How would it differ from let’s say the army when it comes to selecting your job?
It’s very similar. You work with your recruiter and depending on how well you score on your ASVAB in addition to what jobs are available you will know going in what you’re going to do
Can you make a video or answer this do you have to jump out a plane when you go on deployment or at all in the air force
only if A. You're in special forces, or B. the aircraft is on fire.
