Love these! Not native to the US but I inherited a mound of primroses when I moved to this house. I have since split it into about 5 plants and have them on corner of a bed. So pretty (if I can keep the deer off of them)!! Looking forward to seeing an update to the Garden Transformation for Wildlife in London! ;)

Primroses take me back to childhood memories. There is a massive primrose meadow close by; I had heard about it over the last few years and finally found it earlier this month. I just thought I would share, for those who don't know, how to sex primroses :o). A female primrose has a little "blob" (stigma) on a stalk (style) in the centre of the flower. The last bunch of primroses in Joel's video are female. A male primrose has a tiny little star right in the centre (see 0:29) with the pollen attached to it. I love that we have quite a few in our garden and they self seed quite readily. Thanks for the video Joel, I hope you are well. All the best, Debbie.

The Primulas are a really welcome sign of Spring, and the bonus is the Butterflies they attract at a time when nectar is not so plentiful, plus of course Bee Flies, which have always been one of my favourites, The Duke of Burgundy Fritillaries also find them an essential larval foodplant, mainly on our Cowslips. I purchased some primrose and viola (on major markdown) last summer at the end of season. After planting, I allowed the viola to go to seed. I had volunteer viola spring up mid winter through the snow and Primrose is thriving. My yard is currently a mass of yellow between the dandelion, yellow primrose and yellow viola.
💗 Gonna get me some.....I’m not very good with plants & knowing what/where to plant and for when....but I was at B&Q yesterday and saw a plant with a busy bee on it collecting nectar, so promptly bought it for my garden!

I grow them in AZ in dappled sun containers in the winter. By April, it's 33° C and they're totally done and its dried up crinkly-leafed rattiness in full shade until December!. 🙄
I've got a 2'×16' stretch of grass between the back of my garage and the shed and for the first time I'm letting it grow wild this year to see what happens.

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thanks, Joel! It's separated from the main garden by a concrete path so I've fenced it off with some old wire border trim and anything that grows thru that will be strimmed off to keep the rest of the garden tidy. But in the confined area nature can go nuts!

There you go, you've finally given me a question I can't really answer! haha - they may well be called that, I do know that Simnel Cake (baked around Easter time) does have 11 marzipan balls on top, supposed to represent the disciples, so that's Easter related for sure - but you often see this cake with sugared or candied primrose flowers on top.... so is that a yes? ;) Best wishes, Joel

Many garden centres sell a cultivar known as "Everlast" which produce more flowers but are no good for wildlife. Make sure you get Primula vulgaris. I have found it can be a minefield buying plants for wildlife because many cultivars are either no good for wildlife, or substantially less good than the original plant.

I've heard of Primrose Sands as a place Lee, but are you speaking about Evening Primrose by any chance? Our natives grow no more than about 20cm but the Evening Primrose can grow to around 1 metre or more.... Good question though! ;) They are the primula family, this even includes the tiny flower of Scarlet Pimpernel - in the beginning of the video you can see a lilac coloured group of them, where bees have cross-pollinated from nearby domestic gardens I think :) Hope you're doing ok, best wishes as always - Joel
what do i do with my primroses once they are spent for the year i have them in my border do i cut them down to the soil or just leave them to wither away i dead head as they grow but its after i dont know what to do with them im in scotland
Hi Elle, although it might be a little late for this year, don't be tempted to dead-head them as they will produce seed and bring you more plants :) If there are too many in one clump then after they have finished flowering you can dig them up and separate them into more plants. My primrose plants in Tasmania are so tall, around 140cm! Flowers are just emerging now

I have the yellow ones which are doing really well but the pink ones are not doing well in the garden i think i need should pot them up in compost
