  • This week we finish up building the axles for the old chevy truck. Its been great working with my dad on these axles and I look forward to taking him for a spin in this once worn out old truck. Huge thanks to my dad and Yukon for the help making this happen. I cant wait to finish this truck.
if you are interested in anything from Yukon Gear and axle, this build went about as smooth as it gets and everything fit exactly as it should.

It’s heartwarming to watch you work with your dad. My dad owned two different gas stations and while I was too young to help him, I stood over him and watched like a hawk. My son would watch me for 5 minutes and then be gone. Later in life while we were doing suspension work on his mother’s car, he asked me how I learned to do all this stuff and I just gave him a silly look.

28:30 When I did my differential,I made a rig that applied an adjustable, predetermined torque to the input shaft, using a large instant coffee can with cord wound around it and weights hanging off the cord.
Calculate the radius of the can and the weight on the cord to give the correct torque.
For weights, I used a plastic food container and added water to the correct weight.
The object is to preload the bearing until the weight falls at a constant rate, neither increasing in speed or slowing to a stop.
Much more precise than turning a dynamic torque gauge by hand.

I supervised several female airmen in my last few years in the Air Force. Gotta say once men get their egos out of the way women will do a lot of things more diligently and more throughly than most men. That cab looks great. Good work Elizabeth. Good work Steve. Must be a pleasure working with someone like your dad who actually knows what he’s doing.

Steve, I may have said it previously, but a second or third time is ok too. I think it's great your dad is out there working with you in the shop on your project. My dad was a city boy, so rarely in his life had more than a hammer or hand saw in his hand. As a result, unfortunately we didn't get to do too much together. Father/son moments are priceless. I'm thankful for the time my dad and I did have together. He was as good a father as you could ask for and I can see your dad is as well.

Happy new year to you and Elizabeth and your children Steve, also to your Mom and Dad. It's great to see you working with him doing the axle, although it would have been nice to see and HEAR more your interaction together, while you were doing the work. I bet I'm not the only one who likes to hear his "Pearls of wisdom " either lol Elizabeth made a great job of sound proofing the cab. If there is any danger of running out of the soundproofing after doing the cab back and the doors, don't start from one side of the roof but start from the centre line outwards, equally as any droning will be towards the centre and get less as it goes out towards the tighter curves over each end of the roof panel.

Happy New Year Steve and Elizabeth. Kudos Elizabeth for a job well done with the sound deadening mats and also to your father Steve for his help rebuilding the rear. My father owned a fleet of tri-axle dump trucks and taught me everything he knew. The business went to me when he retired at age 70 and I closed the business 2018 when I retired. He always said never be afraid to open a book to be sure the assembling is correct. We were alike and I always treasured the time working with him rebuilding engines, transmissions, and rears. He passed away May 2020 at age 94 and is sorely missed. Hope your entire family will stay safe during the holidays.

Happy New Year to you Steve and the entire family. I noticed you didn't mention either differential vents when you were doing the rebuild (or maybe I missed it). If those vents are plugged up all that work will result in blown out axle seals and messed up brake pads and shoes. Lots of folks don't know that differentials will run warm and even hot as they are worked, creating gas pressure in the housing that needs to vent. If you plan on doing water foraging be sure your vent tubes are routed above the highest water point and you have a good poppet valve in the end of your tube to protect that running gear. Cheers into the new year! Thanks for the Share Steve.. Stay Safe

    Happy new year Steve.
Treasure the time you spend with your dad. I wanted to work with dad a lot more then I did mainly do to driving a truck.
He was a maintenance mechanic/machinist at a book publishing company. He told me 1 time the only thing he couldn't make with a lathe, a mill, & a welder was ball bearings. And that was only because he could never figure out how they got the balls in the races.
He injured his good knee 3 months prior to retirement 10 years ago. He could not walk do to needing a double knee replacement and the VA wouldn'tdo it till he lost weight. So for the next 9 years my step mom would all but keep him out of the shop. Saying she was afraid he would fall. Even though he had got an electric wheelchair I even bought 3 more. And I would be there as well. He was supposed to exercise but unless she was going to the store she wouldn't let him out of bed. Then 4 years ago he was put in a nursing home for about 2 months because he had congestive heart failure. They made him get out of bed and use his chair. He came home and 4 days a week he was out of bed and out of his room for over a year. She still wouldn't let go outside. Mainly because of the blood thinners he was on made his body cold to the touch. He shivered all the time even when the house was 90°.
In Jan 2020 I quit driving a truck. In November 2020 he died. I was to late in staying home for him. He had finally lost the weight the VA wanted him to loose but it was all mussel that he lost. He had deteriorated to the point he was a "skeleton with a belly" as he put it. And do to COVID19 he waited to long to go to the hospital for what we found out was total kidney failure. He died less then a month before his 71st birthday. And 3 days before Thanksgiving. He never got to see how my shop was tailored to me working from a wheelchair myself. I can no longer stand very long at a time as my back will not allow it. So cherish every moment with him. I miss it very much.

If there are any areas on the floor/firewall that get hot from the exhaust. If you have extra sound deadening, double layer over the hot spots. It works decent for that too.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ! I think you know how blessed you are Steve. Such a great family! I am lucky if I get any help at all, and always got evil looks when getting family to even help when bleeding brakes.
