Last night it was not videos keeping me awake or doom scrolling. It was reading books. One non-fiction.. by Ryan Holiday, and the second a detective fiction novel. Oh the Joy of ADHD… even the Calm sleep stories could not quiet my mind. It was not insomnia, it was a mind that wanted to read and learn.

I spent most of college on 3 hours of sleep, and it took a toll that I have not been able to heal (even after 10 years). It changed my body and my mind and in ways that aren't good. I have recently gotten some help for my insomnia and life is getting a lot better now. I used to think sleep was for the weak and that you needed to sacrifice it in order to do good things. Life has disabused me of that notion. Sleep is not for the week, sleep is one of the things that keeps you physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy. Don't let anything keep you from getting the right amount of sleep! (with the possible exception of having kids). It isn't worth it.

I started journaling in the hospital, almost three years ago now. I clasped from a stomach bleed while on a zoom call. I passed out and vomited blood in my bathroom. My wife being home saved my life. I have changed jobs, gotten away from on call, but I am still learning not to overwork. Journaling is a great way to try to listen to yourself more. Thank you for your books and your advice, for some of us following is a matter of life or death.

He is describing Aristotle's Golden Mean, which states that any virtue, in either excess or deficiency.
Take sleep / rest for example... It's my highest priority (a virtue) but in excess it becomes sloth. In deficiency it becomes destructive.
When we have the awareness and discipline to deploy the Golden Mean in all areas of life, we are in the practice of self-mastery. 🙏

Ryan, you might be interested to read about the glymphatic system of the brain. Discovered only about 10 years ago, the brain only drains lymphatic fluid when asleep. Therefore, sleep deprivation is literally a poisoning of the brain from lack of drainage.

Right now I have the luxury of putting sleep and rest first. After that I work hard into the evening. I really don't identify with the "wake up early" mantra and think that the important thing is actually "putting your day up for review". Why does it matter that I woke up early as long as the goals for the day were met? Morning people will push back on this but what I'm saying makes perfect sense. I am well rested AND I work for most of the day. I say DO NOT wake up early if this isn't in your nature. But do put your day up for review.
Many stoic virtues conflict with each other. I feel like the important thing is knowing which ones to pull off of the shelf and when.

I have become a morning person. I wake up and have some quiet time. My wife is a night owl, and an afternoon sprinter. There is no intrinsic virtue in our schedules.
These cave man philosophers had pretty crappy lighting. The species is evolving with the adoption of technology. I like the message of mindfulness and attention to the middle path. Dipping your toe in tech is a reality for many of us. I like to view temerance as moderation, rather than abstinence for most things.

Getting up early in the day absolutely kills my productivity. My most creative, analytical and energetic hours of the day are between about 9pm and 1am. So technically, for me going to bed early would be lazy!

A major difficulty for me is a broken endocrine system. Been working to fix it for 6.5 years, but my body has medical science stumped. I spend a lot of time resting, but it's not "relaxing." I'm not enjoying it, it's just necessary for me.
I do what I can with what I've been dealt. I am definitely someone who, despite working not to, will push myself too hard. So I am taking from this what I can, and trying to leave the parts that don't apply in my case.
