Thank you for the review. For the people complaining about how long it took to start: I can't see the top of his ceiling but it seems to be mounted to low. The top of detectors are not supposed to be more than 6 inches from the ceiling. Also burning some paper in a pan is not the way you test a detector. But the distance from the ceiling is really important. The lower it is on the wall the longer it will take the smoke to get to it thus the longer the fire will be bruning.
Very in depth, thanks for posting the unboxing video. I was unaware that they detectors would use each other to announce the emergency to all areas. That right there sold me on this. I'm imaging 2 for the bedrooms and one for the kitchen for good coverage.
Mark Assenmacher It would have to, to meet most code requirements around the country. However you can not just mix a Nest into your current system we have 8 detectors and we would have to replace all 8 because if you replace just one then the others would not sound (wired system as per code here). And spending like $800 on such a luxury item is silly. Plus the square design is hard to match up to a room, there is a reason why detectors are round (they go on and look good any direction they are mounted)...Nest failed to understand why detectors are round and that is a basic thing to understand.
I just purchased 3 of these. I have 5 floors. If a fire breaks out in the basement and I was on the top floor sleeping I'd never hear it otherwise. I didn't think of that until my friend mentioned it. I'm debating if to by a 4th I'm sure I can space them Out well enough to make 3 work. Yea definitely not getting one for each room lol!!
+Matthew Joules Even cheapo $15 smoke detectors will relay and trigger all of the smoke detectors as long as one is activated. This assumes that they are hardwired, at least.
The Nest Wave feature was actually recalled because it would delay the alarm sounding with the feature on. Nest removed the smoke/CO alarms from their website until they fixed it. Nest then announced that they would do a software update to fix this for all other Nest Protects. On the 2.0 Nest Protects they have a feature where you can silence it from your phone. You can also update the first-generation ones to do this. I couldn’t stop laughing when you said professional idiot 😂😂
WOW someone's ACTUALLY finally done an actual test with fire :) so many "reviews" of the detectors just unbox them and that's it. At least we know NOT to buy Nest smoke alarms now :)
+Steven Whiting We found a troll on here. I hope you know that he did not place them in the proper position on the wall. They need to be on the ceiling or as close to it as possible. The 4 I have (2 on ceiling and 2 on walls) alert so much faster because they are 2" from the ceiling. Put one on the floor and see what happens or maybe we should leave the installation to people who know what they are doing.
when you burn toilet roll, smoke will not come out because its clean, kinda like how smoke doesn't come out of a gas cooker and the smoke alarm doesn't go off. unless he blew out the tissue the smoke will come out like it did when the fire was going out in the video and it will sense it. hense the name "smoke alarm" it senses smoke, not fire. stuff like plastic and wood normally causes smoke when on fire because thats its natural reaction or because of all the other ingredients it has like colour or some kind of gloss/finish. (I used to play with fire... a lot xD)
Just read the Google play description : Sensors : Photoelectric smoke sensor Carbon monoxide Heat sensor Humidity sensor Three activity sensors Ambient sensor
Couple of pointers... smoke detectors work best when mounted on the ceiling! Also, the nest smoke element is an optical chamber which best detects smoldering fires. If he had blown out the flame it would have triggered earlier. To detect a flaming fire it would be best to use an ionisation detector but due to these containing trace amounts of radioactive materials, not many manufactures produce them nowadays. Nest deffo don't.
DeAndre Hardy No need to agree. Science is wether true or false. And i guess it's true. When it's on the wall, first the whole ceiling has to fill up with smoke before it reaches the alarm.
Unfortunately the delay in the nest detector not detecting smoke earlier was due to the poor positioning. In saying this the area that gets covered in smoke first should there be a first is the ceiling hence the reasons you should be installing these items on the ceiling and not on the side wall as per your video. If the detector was ceiling mounted you would have had a much better reaction time then what you did.
Is there a way to compare the Nest with other smoke detectors side by side? Because it took more than 1 minute to detect smoke from a fire right below the device, it looked very inefficient to me.
He’s right. It’s not the same thing. Fire detectors detect heat, smoke detect smoke. Neighbor of mine had replaced all alarms in her house with fire detectors and had a smoldering fire from cigarette ashes burning her carpeting. Fell asleep smoking. Never had flames to heat up the place and since the alarms weren’t made for smoke, no alarms sounded. She was lucky. They used to make fire detectors for kitchens smoke detectors for other rooms.
There is a huge delay in this video because initially there is NO SMOKE. It's a smoke detector not a fire/ heat detector. lol I have the Protect system in my home and any time we burn food on the stove or light a fire in the fire place, and the draft is the wrong way, the SMOKE sets off the alarm. Its a great solution.
I think the place and position is wrong. It seems to me that it should not be so close to the door because of the airflow, all the airflow goes out the door before the Nest Protect arrives.
My dad said to put it on the wall because it wouldn't work on time so make sure to put it on the wall because it would be bad if it didn't work on time!
wtf it should be EMERGRNCY SMOKE DOWNSTAIRS but no iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii emergency iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii theres iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii smokeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii downstairsiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Guess AMAZON doesn't like the Military. Just like so many other products. DOES NOT SHIP TO APO addresses. APO is a Military address. I've complained to Amazon. You should to. thank. This is a safety product that can save lives.
+Baltofan 700 They were supposed to fix that in the second revision. I was hesitant to purchase even one after reading all the negative reviews on the first model, however they seemed to address that in the 2.0 versions. I recently bought six of them. Expensive, totally...but for the features they offer, it seemed justified. You're getting a good ionizing/optical smoke detector and a CO detector with WiFi in one package. If you price comparable units separately, they come to roughly the same cost of the Nest Protect. I could probably have gotten away with $4.98 smoke detectors, but these talk and have WiFi! I'm sure my wife would have been just as happy with the cheaper ones, but I'm happy with them. They also addressed battery access in the new models. They no longer require tools to gain access to them. It's just a simple removal from the mounting bracket and a pushbutton battery door.
Anything thats live saving and battery powered , cost way too mutch and ia not used by the state or busnesses is NOT a good idea to have in ur home. Has i work in a fire safty field, i only use the products that state and businesses use, they are super cheap and wired
Thank you for the review.

5:29 It did since the start
These things work better when placed on the ceiling instead of over a door jam. As you have seen.
Ok carina

Kevin Lam No, Nest Protect works via WIFI. They cannot be triggered via a wire from old fashion smoke alarms.
Love my Nest products especially
my thermostat!

Steven Whiting ??
Steven is correct it took WAY to long for that to go off

Can this device operate with the internet as a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector?
Still take a while for it to sound from smoke detection.
These smoke alarms are supposed to have temp sensors as well so they sense when it starts to warm up as well.
Just read the Google play description :
Sensors :
Photoelectric smoke sensor
Carbon monoxide
Heat sensor
Humidity sensor
Three activity sensors
Ambient sensor
14:00 - LOL, it's alerting the NSA first, hence the delay.

How can a dog or cat trigger the stop button unless its 3 foot high...
Im pretty sure there was a limit of how far the sensor can detect movement.
maybe the sensor is strong enough to reach the floor, they could of adjusted it but idk its silly tbh they could of added a option to enable it
its a 6 foot radius.
If it was on the ceiling it would have gone off sooner
Wow look at me I don’t care about people’s opinions on things because I’m Indigosound78
Imagine getting that notification while at work or something, knowing your home is unattended... eeeeeh I'd have a heart attack!
That’s what insurance is for.
it is likely that you have configured it wrong?

Smoke detectors should always be mounted on the ceiling and at min. 0,5 meters from the wall.
agree
DeAndre Hardy No need to agree. Science is wether true or false. And i guess it's true. When it's on the wall, first the whole ceiling has to fill up with smoke before it reaches the alarm.
If people read the manuals may find that ceiling and 0,5 from the wall are pretty standard.

Was looking into the Nest Protect to replace my existing fire alarm, but it looks like this product has been discontinued.
i use your video for my homework. just at school thank you

you placed the protector in the wrong place.
If you look at the web site and instructions included, it states that the device and be mounted this way as well as the traditional way!
tedblight not like that. It's to close to the end of the wall. It said it needs to be at LEAST 5 inches away from the edge, and this is like 2.
14:28 Starts to Ding
Fire starts at 13:18
It's a smoke detector not a fire detector

My thoughts exactly. Love him for trying though

Fire has Smoke
Look who’s talking
Do I have to pay a subscription to make the alarm goes off in case of fire?
Starts at 14:17

When will they start installing THESE in public schools?
how do you know when I see him
Seems like some people are triggered as the position, the way you tested it And other stuff!
hi
It’s for kids or no for kids
Why do everyone says without further do
I do not have a Nest Protect but is is
how many boxes!!!!
THATS ALOT
I need to know how to do the set-up WITHOUT a cell phone.
I think the place and position is wrong. It seems to me that it should not be so close to the door because of the airflow, all the airflow goes out the door before the Nest Protect arrives.
is it wireless
Did you bother watching any portion of the video prior to posting this question?
+thisIsSomeShite :no thats me ;)
it wont do any good for me, i must have strobe light. As deaf... I cant hear loudest alarm
When the alarm is sounding, the ring around the button will flash red until the alarm clears
nice demo though thanks mate
My dad said to put it on the wall because it wouldn't work on time so make sure to put it on the wall because it would be bad if it didn't work on time!
Funny your nest protect had a british accent! It would be great if you can customize the voice like Darth Vader or something!
lol
Sorry to stop the joke, google bought nest. You can use many new voices now, including darth vader.
could you please do a giveaway of the nest protect
Great demo. Thanks!
The light function isn't much good if wall mounted.
yeah
interesting you mention replacement required every 7 years, however your not sure!?!!!!
I believe that is standard for all smoke detectors.
Barkative Nah, sadly its 10 years. Due to the fact that the detector is so new, they never set a proper date for replacement.
I have to replace my corbom noxside alarm in 7yrs
