- Surgery preparation can be important to maximize your chance of safe and comfortable recovery! Here are 3 important tips as you prepare for surgery!
1) avoid alcohol before surgery. Not only is alcohol a blood thinner, but it may slow wound healing and possibly even contribute to worse scarring if your body is slow to heal.
2) avoid marijuana and cannabis before surgery! The use of marijuana or weed before surgery increases the risk of heart complications, increases anesthesia requirements, and may increase the risk of breathing problems. Nausea and pain are also possible complications.
3) don't try to tip your anesthesiologist! 🤣 especially not for extra!

Also do not let Doctors do what they want. Because it is about money for them. I had a cyst on an ovary. They wanted to take out not just the ovary with the cyst. My Uterus, my other ovary, and skin in my perinatal area.I went through surgery and my innards were fine. The cyst was benign. None of my other organs were affected. Protest some surgical procedures. Or you will wind up with a lot of physical problems.
Hospital doctors don't get paid for each surgery or organ they remove, they have a set salary. They are legally required to tell you that they might have to take out more than the cyst if that turns out to be necessary because a lot of times you can't know until you actually see it.
The money wasn't for more good juice it was to make sure you would pay attention and the patient wouldn't die.

My mom's friend, a doctor, had to do stitches on a drunk driver. He usually would shot some local anaesthetic before stitching. But when the patient is under any alcohol or drug influence, he can't do that. It may kill them 😬
So he ordered some male nurses and the policeman to hold the patient down. It was a messy affair.

@@mamax7169 Drunks in Indonesia are different than the US or Europe. Adults may drink in places that sells them legally, but those places are usually upscale. Legally produced alcohol may be sold illegally as well, like on street corners. Home brewing or mixing is illegal, but this is the method a lot of drunks use. They may also mix cough syrup, cola, or other substances 😬

Did not know about the alcohol thing; thanks. Unfortunately, all of my adult surgeries have been completely unplanned! Fortunately, I am not a heavy drinker, not do I smoke anything.

@@MedicalSecrets I just read a pharmacology paper for class documenting the antinociceptive synergy between cannabinoids & opioid pain relievers. But i suppose you can choose to combine the two *after* surgery to not complicate things.
@@jamiebarr3118 there can be a theoretical, or more than theoretical, risk of respiratory depression or over sedation when combining two powerful chemical classes with sedative properties. This is very dangerous territory

No one is going to listen especially if they are addicts. If you tell me not to use heroin or fentynal, I will laugh because they're is no way I'm going to be able to go to surgery while I'm going through withdrawals. You can barely walk or talk when you are going through opiate withdrawals.

I checked into the hospital the night before for a D & C in the morning. This was about 30 years ago. They brought me breakfast the morning of surgery day and said you're only in for observation. I figured it was going to be a long day so I ate the breakfast. Long story, Dr. phones nursing station loking for me, why am i not down at surgery. Anyway, I became his last sugery of that day. At least the Dr. warned me they would probably bring me lunch, which they did, and WHATEVER I DID, TO NOT EAT IT! Believe me, I complied.

Because all drugs can have unforeseen effects in combination with anaesthesia and you shouldn't take anything that isn't absolutely necessary before a surgery. Everything you do take you should first ask your anaesthesiologists about.

It also has some other considerations for the anesthetic plan.
1. Cardiovascular considerations
2. Respiratory considerations - (marijuana can alter respiratory function)
3. There is evidence that Marijuana use increases risk of PONV which is terrible nothing worse than patients vomiting post op.

Just tell your DR about smoking cannabis before surgery so they can adjust the meds accordingly have had plenty of surgeries while on cannabis and never had any issues and it actually makes the recovery process more efficient
I probably should have told them but never thought about it. Everything was fine with my surgery. Just took me a little longer to wake up is all.
The alcohol advice is probably not going to happen. The best I can do is the day before.

Keeping people breathing is pretty important. Bunging a load of large-particle contamination on ur alveoli makes the anaesthetist's job a bit more challenging.

Perhaps if surgeons would provide adequate pain control prior to surgery, these issues may no longer exist. My orthopedic surgeon told me THC was as good as pain medication, he lied. Being 55 and high is an awful feeling, besides the fact that it does not work.

Usually we can sort of intuit if you lied to us about your alcohol intake or marijuana use. With marijuana use you usually require more to put you under. With alcohol it depends on if it's chronic or acute.

I presume you’re American… remember we have a much more relaxed view, lower drinking ages, and a correlating lower rate of alcoholism. You’re simply wrong, an alcoholic is someone who has a problem with alcohol. Drinking everyday doesn’t make you an alcoholic.

Really thought not eating would be on this list. I ended up in recovery overnight next to a woman who ate before she went in. When she came out she spent the night puking pizza chunks all over our bathroom.
These are instructions not covered by info packets, the not eating or drinking is covered by the info packets so you'd be informed either way.

Emergency surgery is elected to be done because the risks of not performing the surgery is higher than the risk that blood clotting problems or thc. Doctors always weigh the benefit vs the risk when deciding to operate. That's why I still have a tumor inside me right now; the risk is too much for the potential benefits.
At Greece we give to the surgeons and anesthesiologists money before surgery to take care us better....

because it can fuck with the anesthetic they give you and heightens your risk of waking up mid surgery. I hear that story commonly from people who smoke beforehand. it's because smoking weed boosts your metabolism and makes the meds flush from your system quicker

What is the reason for not smoking weed? That’s what I thought.
Increased heart rate, lowered bp, respiration and overall increase in complications from anaesthesia. Moral of the story, no weed before surgery.
What they said also if you are anxious about surgery they can give you something gentle like hydroxyzine which the amount in your blood can be calculated a lot more easily than someone who has an unknown amount of THC in their system.
