I read Night with my grade 11 students and they were so engaged. Had some great discussions with them, they were so interested in this book, and many of them read ahead on their own time. An amazing, yet heart breaking story.
I just finished War of the Worlds by HG Wells, it's only 192 pages, and it was really good! Plus it's such a classic sci-fi so anyone that loves that genre plus wants a short book is in for a treat (if somehow they haven't gotten to that one yet)!
I've read 5 of your recommendations and love all of them! The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favorite classics and A Monster Calls was one of the hardest I've ever cried from a book.

I read Night in middle school and naturally, I read way ahead of the class and ended up crying IN CLASS! People had no idea why and we’re very concerned lol. Mortifying but god damn that is a super impactful book
The murderbot diaries is probably my favourite series of books, thank you for mentioning it in a video what seems like a million years ago. Also Martha Wells wrote a murderbot novel! So more murderbot will be coming soon! And Binti! Nnedi Okorafor is an amazing author!
I tend to read super long books ( 500 or more pages) but I really want to pick up a few shorter books this year. I also want to read more non-fiction. I remember reading that Eie Wiesel book when I was in high school and it really will rip your heart out.
Night is such an amazing but sad book. I think it’s a book everyone should read. There are more books by the author of Night, I read the books in 7th year of school during WWII studies.

blanky by patrick kealan burke is a really good tiny book to at less then 100 pages. a few weeks after the death of his infant daughter, he hears a noise in her nursery upstairs. when he goes up to see, there is nothing weird about the room until he sees the baby blanket on the floor. and so begins the nightmare because that blanket has no business being on the floor. It had been buried with his daughter. he also did Sour Candy another book less then 150 pages. A father and son enjoy spending time together by going on fun outings like the zoo and museums, trips to get candy. From the outside they look happy - if the father seems to spoil his kid and give into his every want, well there's nothing wrong with that, especially given his son's public tantrums that make people stare. What no one knows is that just two days ago, the man had never seen this kid in his life but finds himself unable to convince anyone that this is not his child.
This video was so perfectly timed... I'm currently reading The Stand by Stephen King and will definitely need some short books to binge-read once I'm finished. Thanks Emily! :)
i read Herland last year and really enjoyed it, i’m not much of a short book person (or a classic/older book person) but i really enjoyed the commentary in the book. Also Brave New World is 👌🏻👌🏻 a little longer but still a shorter book. I LOVE animal farm, my brother tried to read it and didn’t understand what it was about which i found hilarious so he didn’t lkke the book as much. Speaking of “school classics” that you didn’t read, i didn’t read Lord of the Flies until i was out of school and i LOVED reading that

If you “enjoyed” Night you should read Because of Romek by David Faber (if you can find a copy. There are some used copies on amazon I think). I had the opportunity to meet the author and hear him speak when I was in middle school, and some of the things he talked about stuck with me. It’s heartbreaking to read about some of the things that happened to him and his family. But it’s a shorter book (longer than Night however).

Chesterfield (184 pages), We should all be feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (48 pages), The last lecture by Randy Pausch (206 pages), The Princess diarist by Carrie Fisher (246 pages) and Fox 8 by George Saunders (49 pages) are just some I have on my shelves that I recommend. I also recommend the graphic novel series Saga. So. Damn. Good. Also Fables. Lol. Ok I’ll stop now.
Night is a part of a trilogy, although Dawn and Day are fiction, whereas Night is Non-Fiction. Also the Monster Calls movie is fucking excellent. It follows the novel to a T if I remember correctly.

For the Elie Wiesel book Night, there are two books after it to make a trilogy, Dawn and Day. However, Night is the only one of the trilogy that is nonfiction. The other two books are fiction. Dawn I felt was worth the read. But I did not make it through Day because I just couldn’t get into it and it was so different from the first two that to me it just didn’t fit. But Night is definitely must read. It is so tragic and so filled with emotions!
I really liked the first Murderbot book but dnfed the second book pretty early on, but since you mentioned it gets better in the third book again, maybe I'll give this series another shot

The Ballad of Black Tom is a retelling of sorts of Lovecraft's Horror at Red Hook. I can appreciate some of Lovecraft's stories despite his well-documented xenophobia (which is very relevant to LaValle's interpretation), but I read this one and it was absolutely awful. If you do decide to give him a try, start with just about anything else.
I didn't really think that I'm Thinking of Ending Things was that impressive. Bird Box was good. Haven't read Martha Wells' book yet. And Binti was alright. A few I enjoyed were Human Flesh by Nick Clausen (was free on Kindle), The Summer I Died by Ryan C Thomas, and Random Acts of Senseless Violence by Jack Womack.
A Monster Calls has me ugly crying (I have that same edition). I’m a mom which made it worse. I don’t cry easily when reading either so when a book makes me ugly cry that’s saying a lot!
Is Night the one about the guy and his father during the Holocaust? Oh that's a hard read. I can't believe that kind of shiz happens in the world. Humanity can be so so so awful.
I read I'm Thinking of Ending Things and that book frustrated the mess out of me. I read the last page which (I'm gonna try not to spoil this) contained a "suggestion" to another random character (a cheeky way of referring to YOU, the reader) and I was like hell no. Closed the book and wanted my life back.
I don't feel like you believeing Lovecraft was racist was a necessary part of a recommendation but I enjoyed the rest as usual. Maybe I'm just touchey ☺️
