  • "Stompin'at the Savoy".
    Louis Stewart: Jazz Guitar;
    Steve LaSpina: Bass;
    Peter Ainscough: Drums.
    This clip has been uploaded in accordance with the fair use clause for educational purposes only.
    "Stompin' at the Savoy", is a 1934 jazz standard composed by Edgar Sampson. It is named after the Savoy Ballroom.
    Although the song is credited to Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, and Edgar Sampson, and the lyrics by Andy Razaf, in reality the music was written and arranged for Chick Webb's band by Sampson, who was the band's alto saxophonist. It was recorded as an instrumental by both Webb and Benny Goodman, whose recording was the bigger hit. Lyrics were added by Andy Razaf, who wrote the lyrics to many popular songs. Goodman and Webb got their names added to the song when their bands recorded it (Wiki).

    Louis is a guitar giant. All young guitar players should listen to him and be inspired by his tight tempo and deep sense of swing. Jazz can evolve, it is natural however without swing it does not mean a thing...

    One thing I notice about Louis in all the videos besides his mastery of bop language and his instrument, is his great taste in guitars! I’ve seen with L7s, Super 400s, ES-150, ES-175 among others.

    This is crazy to watch, I just watched Louis getting schooled on how to vamp the ending of this tune with Benny Goodman, now here he is schooling Steve at the end! The student had become the master! Once again...jazz school is not like this anymore!

    New York-based guitarist Dave O’Rourke, who was mentored by Louis, said: “Louis Stewart set the bar so high in Dublin that those of us who moved abroad to play, especially me in New York, had already been exposed to jazz played at it’s highest level.”
    Acknowledging his own personal debt to Louis and his playing, Dave added: “His legacy can be heard, and will live on in those of us who came after him.”

      thanks so much for this. i knew Louis, he played in a venue i worked at in Dublin and I was absolutely blown away. when i returned home to the US i began evangelizing him and his playing. i was so sad to hear that he passed away, but i'm so lucky to have known him for a short time and to have had access to his incredible talent on a weekly basis. i'll never forget him.
