Really enjoyed seeing Derek mark out to all these little Splatterhouse moments. Want to see us take on the rest of the trilogy? Or another old school horror game? Shout out some suggestions!
Please absolutely play 2 and 3 with Derek! Love your dynamic and all of Derek's energy and love for Splatterhouse. Hell if possible, I'd watch you both play the remake as well!!
22:48 The game had a lot of cut content, including tons of fully voice lines. But my favorite of the lines was for the Scream Park. it was in relation to Rick letting Jen down and talking about how hard it is to maintain a relationship. The Terror Mask's response? Ah, quit moping. You don't need to explain to me Rick, I understand. Love is a magical journey, along glowing tunnels on a golden swan, and girls like Jen are always the first in line. But the ride's a long one, and as her eyes grow accustomed to the golden glow she starts to notice the flaws; the flaking paint, the little cracks in the scenery. So she looks closer and she finds - huh - it isn't gold at all; it's plywood and plaster and gold paint. She gets off the ride and peers through those cracks, wondering if the magic is still there; only it isn't magic she finds, it's just you Rick; some guy pedaling his ass off to make the whole thing work. Suffering, depravity, torture, violation; I've seen things that would make your ass clench up tight enough to crap diamonds, and I've watched it all with a smile on my face. But love? Love scares the shit out of me. - Unused dialogue of the Terror Mask in the 2010 game. --copy paste coment from Legion beast in the splaterhouse (2010) review from SSFF
The Terror Mask is an ancient ceremonial stone mask that attaches to your face and makes you stupid strong. The whole series is secretly built on a JoJo reference, since back then it also counted as a horror series.
I'm a die-hard Splatterhouse fan. I want to propose a theory as to who the final boss is. I believe that this is the same guy from part 2 after you free Jennifer from the Crystal Prison and also returned in part 3 as the Evil One who wanted the Dark Stone. It would make sense as to why the Hell Mask summoned him. This whole time, the Mask wanted to defeat him so he can rule the world. Jennifer was just a seal to keep the Evil One from coming back. I also believe that Dr. West realized he made a mistake in his experiments when the Evil One took a physical form. West kills the Evil One, buries him near the house. Another reason why West was attacking Rick so he can stop him from breaking the seal by ressurecting Jennifer. So when Rick escapes from the house fire, the Mask summons him, Evil One is then defeated, but sealed by the spirit of Jennifer. I would also assume that Jennifer is psychic, hence why she and Rick have a son that is also psychic and that's why the monsters not only were after David but also his mother.
I love the soundtrack of this game. It describes perfectly the insanity that is West Manor. About Hell Chaos (the final boss) there is a theory that say he is Dr. West, victim of his own experiments. I think (I am not sure) Namco wanted Herbert West as the villain, so there is the name's reference.
I know it is probably never going to happen, but I would love to see this game ported to Switch/PS5/Xbox/PC for like $15/$20. It was so fun once you get how the game is played. And Jim Cummings was a really big highlight, you could tell how much fun he had recording those lines.
He did have fun, but not sure if its confirmed or not, but Jim himself did allegedly say he did have fun voicing the lines alot but he hated the outcome of the project in the longrun
Gmork, that god damn wolf terrified me as a kid. The book has a cool backstory for the wolf, he's actually an assassin working for the nothing sent to kill Atreyu, and the kid doesn't even know it.
Splatterhouse 2010 is the definition of a cult classic game. It may have bombed when it first came out, but the glimmers of gold you find in there make it a staple of the franchise. Kills me that there wasn't a PC release of any kind
To me, with how the sprites colored and shaded, the final boss looked like a mutated Cheese & Pizza sauce monster. Still an excellent game, and one I'd happily complete over and over again.
Hey, Uncle Matt! Uncle Derek! I have deep dived into the SH2 lore. There are a LOT of fridge brilliance moments. I'll avoid spoiling by posting all that in the replies, but it's really good stuff that recontextualizes SH3 and even SH1 big time.
OK, SH2 in Japan has no Dr. Mueller. The mask (which is called the Hell Mask in Japan. Boss of SH1 is called Hell Chaos so that's the connection and explanation for that boss) tells Rick psychically that he can still save Jennifer. That she's not dead yet and Rick can resurrect her. I think it means her soul can be saved and resurrected. So he goes to the burned mansion and finds the second mansion and yes that is zombie Dr. West. So I guess his reanimator shenanigans worked because he's clearly beaten death. Put a pin in that for later. After you beat him you unseal the land of the dead, and find Jennifer and save her and escape from the big blue Evil God (and yes, he's the same as the Evil God in SH3). The manual, in a throwaway description of this level states that Jennifer is trapped in the crystal that seals him away. Breaking the crystal is what unseals the Evil God. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! Think about it. The mask's goal all along was to usurp the power of the Evil God. He needed Rick to beat him, but more importantly he needed Rick to unseal him. The entire plot of SH2 is the Hell Mask tricking Rick into doing his bidding. Now consider that Dr. West started all these experiments to beat death and has a portal to the Land of the Dead in his basement. He sees the Hell Mask and immediately starts throwing explosives, no questions asked. He's a total pushover and doesn't stand a chance. Why stand and fight instead of running away? HE WAS TRYING TO STOP THE MASK'S PLAN. He even sealed off the Land of the Dead. He was trying to cheat death and meddled with forces beyond his reckoning. He realized too late what he had done and acted desperately to stop it. That's why Jennier's soul is sealed away in the crystal. Because Dr. West actually tried to stop all of this. That's why Jennifer is captured in SH1. It's so fucking brilliant and it's barely even mentioned. It probably sounds bonkers, but after looking at the Japanese manuals to all three games and their in game text (oddly, SH2 has English text in game but it isn't the same as the American release) this is the only conclusion I could come to.
I always imagine Namco and Sega kept trying to one-up each other in the arcade scene for the longest time. Namco makes Rolling Thunder? Sega does Shinobi. Sega makes Virtua Fighter? Namco does Tekken. Namco makes Cyber Sled? Sega does Virtual On. Sega makes Altered Beast? Namco does Splatterhouse. I have no actual evidence this back-and-forth on their own takes on similar types of games between them is legit, I just find it interesting how often they have comparable games.
Splatterhouse is one of those rare retro games that successfully combines '80s body horror with period Gothic; the fact that there's both rooms of meat and a church, gross monsters and Jennifer in a white dress speaks to me on a deep level. (The only other game that's like this in my mind is Clock Tower: The First Fear.) The Lovecraftianism of Splatterhouse shouldn't be overlooked either: Dr. West is probably a reference to Herbert West: Reanimator, which also has interdimensional/time travel elements in it.
I was nine when this game came out and my brother and I still have the Turbo-Graphix 16. I have no idea how my parents let me play it. They were kinda strict on what I could watch, but all video game systems was “Nintendo”. This was before the media got ahold of how violent games were. I still remember sitting on the can, reading the story. Not to mention my GI Joe vehicles would definitely put out an eye.
I remember playing mobile Splatterhouse on my old Nokia - it was the first, genuinely hard game that consistently kicked my ass. It was also the game that I played the most on mobile. Man, I wish the Splatterhouse would have an official PC port...
I only had 4 Turbographix16 games as a kid : Ninja Spirit , Keith Courage , Legendary Axe and Splatterhouse. Splatterhouse and Legendary Axe were my favorites. I loved the TG16 and it's colorful graphics and it's distinct sound chip.
I, also a Dereck, LOVE Splatterhouse. I'd commit war crimes for a remaster of the new one or a sequel! And I keep the little terror mask on my desk :).
I got the Namco Museum on Switch just to play this on Switch (and Tank Force and the Rolling Thunder games but shhh). I love that you got Derek on to talk about it because I love hearing about how much there is to the first two Splatterhouse games once you get past the surface level simplicity.
I was so excited for the reboot on ps3 and pre ordered it even more excited for the replica mask which disappointed me with its size upon receiving, assumed it’d be a life sized one I could take off stand freely and hold..... otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the remake and was looking forward to a sequel til read up on it and saw it did so bad it was crashed n burned before take off basically..... love the series regardless honestly.
Shout out to Derek whose videos introduced me to Splatterhouse and the PC Engine as a whole. Also Rocket Knight Adventures. The mage boss in the second-to-last level of Rondo of Blood, Shaft, can actually kill you with his desperation attack.
0:00 " If you saw this when a kid, you stood there and said hi!" "I would have called mom to pick me up..." **takes a deep breath** In this world: There are only two kind of men.
Openbor got a few fan made Splatterhouse games where your able to play as all 4 Ricks? (the first and 2nd, then 3rd game got two forms) For co-op, not counting the Japanese Mask ones.
Subtle differences in spacing and enemy AI make the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 ports significantly easier than the arcade version. Unfortunately the home ports were also heavily censored both for content and hardware limitations. For what it's worth, I think the 2010 Splatterhouse is worth getting for the original trilogy alone.
URGH. I was actually gonna say that! I read that one novel where the mask possesses a hillybilly, and was gonna bring it up right after, cuz it popped into my head, but then I got distracted with the game, and lost the thought! lol

plz Do!
Please absolutely play 2 and 3 with Derek! Love your dynamic and all of Derek's energy and love for Splatterhouse. Hell if possible, I'd watch you both play the remake as well!!
Take on all the games! 2, 3, the weird SD one on the Famicom (it’s been fan translated), and the remake!
Illbleed. You know it!
Jennifer truly made that Splatterhouse into a Splatterhome.
Can of Coke to you!
It's you Jennifer! You are the Splatterhouse!
Matt: Hey, you wanna play Splatterhouse for the channel?
Me: Few things would make me happier!
Awwww, my heart!!! TTwTT
The moment I saw this video in my feed, I didni't even read the whole title and I'm like "Derek's in this video"
Derek (or anyone), have you ever pulled off the Sliding Kick?
I tried to use it towards the Chainsaw Dude and I couldn't pull it once. :(

Damn. That's good!
Hell Chaos, aka Captain Mozzarella, is the house's final stand against Rick, along with the mask trying to get a body for itself.
"Fuck you, Rembrandt!"
I'm using that line for now on whenever I have to fight evil artwork in a videogame.

Don't give your babies the Terror Mask. It basically causes "The Mask II: Son of the Mask" to happen in your home but everyone dies.
Bold of you to assume the Mask II doesn't already do that on its own
still better than normal Son of the Mask
We NEED more Splatterhouse.
The folds in Rick's clothes in the back sprite makes it look like he took a dump in his jump suit
These October videos have been really awesome, and this one was no exception. I love how much Derek is into Splatterhouse.
I see Derek is in a video and I like. Those are the rules.
Man you two are thumbs up gold 👍🏼 ! More horror games loose commentary from you two please.
LOL, I really DID watch The Big Kids play Splatterhouse in the arcade at the Co-Op post office so many years ago. A bitty horror gamer was born!
There's a dope Doom mod that turns Splatterhouse into a first person shooter, too.
Yep! th-cam.com/video/X_j7bIq4bO4/w-d-xo.html
Matt and Uncle Derek gotta finish the trilogy
I actually have the tiny Terror Mask Replica you display on your shelf.
this series needs to be brought back
Again. The remake had some potential IMO.
i have the mask from the preorder and i also have a splatterhouse tattoo. one of my favorite games i wish we would have gotten more

I like how the hands are flipping you off xD
I have been obsessed with Splatterhouse long before I ever played it, all because of the TG16 ads in comic books of the time
I always imagine Namco and Sega kept trying to one-up each other in the arcade scene for the longest time. Namco makes Rolling Thunder? Sega does Shinobi. Sega makes Virtua Fighter? Namco does Tekken. Namco makes Cyber Sled? Sega does Virtual On.

I'm a simple man. I see Derek and Splatterhouse, I like it.
The classic games are unlocked by completing phases 2, 4 and 8 in the remake's storyline respectively.
Splatterhouse is one of those rare retro games that successfully combines '80s body horror with period Gothic; the fact that there's both rooms of meat and a church, gross monsters and Jennifer in a white dress speaks to me on a deep level. I watch your Splatterhouse retrospective every Halloween. Some of my favorite videos on TH-cam.
Gotta master that slide kick. does the most damage in the game by FAR.
The skelebros are back baby!
I was nine when this game came out and my brother and I still have the Turbo-Graphix 16. I have no idea how my parents let me play it. Ahhh... Splatterhouse, the spiritual prequel to Splatoon.
There is absolutely nothing more perfect to watch this cool October morning than this video. Please play the next two!!!
Hey, it's Derek!
It's him, Derek!!
This was super fun! I would love to see more episodes where you bring a guest to talk about their fav game.
Yeah I had the same thought Matt had. I remember as a kid seeing the game and thought "Nope!".
Uncle Derek is back? Hell yeah
You guys are making so much awesome content I can hardly keep up! Keep them coming guys!
Im so glad these two are friends, theyre both super wholesome together
I remember playing mobile Splatterhouse on my old Nokia - it was the first, genuinely hard game that consistently kicked my ass. It was also the game that I played the most on mobile.

This was an awesome watch, please guys more of this!
I really hope you guys play through the rest of the series!
Never heard of this he before. Thanks for showing us.
I voted for Rick when they had the character ballad for Smash 4, he would’ve been so cool.
I, also a Dereck, LOVE Splatterhouse. I'd commit war crimes for a remaster of the new one or a sequel! And I keep the little terror mask on my desk :).
8:01 Rick is practicing good gun safety Matt!
Please do part 2 before Halloween! ❤️❤️❤️
I got the Namco Museum on Switch just to play this on Switch (and Tank Force and the Rolling Thunder games but shhh). I love that you got Derek on to talk about it because I love hearing about how much there is to the first two Splatterhouse games once you get past the surface level simplicity.
You guys need to do this more often!
I have that baby sized replica statue of the mask
I was so excited for the reboot on ps3 and pre ordered it even more excited for the replica mask which disappointed me with its size upon receiving, assumed it’d be a life sized one I could take off stand freely and hold..... otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the remake and was looking forward to a sequel til read up on it and saw it did so bad it was crashed n burned before take off basically..... love the series regardless honestly.
Rick is Jason with a heart. He just wants to have date night.
Matt and Derek dynamic is good! Skelebros!
This needs a remaster. I love Splatterhouse
I used to be terrified of this series because I saw it in a video game bad ending compilation when I was younger
I've wanted Rick in smash since brawl lol it woulda been funny as hell to see him in ultimate.
Shout out to Derek whose videos introduced me to Splatterhouse and the PC Engine as a whole. Also Rocket Knight Adventures. The mage boss in the second-to-last level of Rondo of Blood, Shaft, can actually kill you with his desperation attack.

Rick should've been an MK guest. I don't care.
My guy Derek!
One of my favorite underrated games of all time
Love Derek showing off his Splatterhouse love. Also, I personally really like the remake. Not the best but definitely good 👌🔥
Skellibros FTW

I used to play this at a circle k in the early 90s
I love SH so much I built the first SH bar top arcade
The final level in the first game is a uterus? spewing out demon embryos?....
Yeah
23:14 People use to call the final boss Captain Mozzerrella.

4:00 Wow, Matt showing he hasn't read the mid-90s Friday the 13th YA novels. Shameful!
URGH. I was actually gonna say that! I read that one novel where the mask possesses a hillybilly, and was gonna bring it up right after, cuz it popped into my head, but then I got distracted with the game, and lost the thought! lol
great games.
