The tension that contributed to the writing of this EPIC track is almost palpable in the lyrics and the buildup. And the climactic close is only slightly behind the dramatic bass drop in the transition.
And one of the few recordings that all 5 members contributed/collaborated on.
The band was so strained that there were rarely more than two artists working on it at the same time and the live performances were so charged with emotional impact you could almost see sparks.
IMO…this song so completely describes the bond (chains) that held the band together.
Can’t remember when/where I learned that when Lindsey and Stevie joined the band that they pledged that no matter what happened, they would not break up the band. A LOT HAPPENED. Christine and John McVie were either divorced or getting divorced. Lindsey and Stevie were torn apart. The drama was real and so was the pain.
The entire RUMORS album spills all the beans and is undoubtedly one of the seminal albums in rock history.

Cool reaction Maggie. Fleetwood Mac and vocalist Stevie Nicks are worth a dive down the ye 'ole rabbit music hole for sure.
And I definitely understand you hearing the similarities after listening to Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," especially since both songs open minimalistically (sp?) with some picking on stringed instruments... "The Chain" has Lindsey Buckingham on a Dobro and "Wanted Dead or Alive" has Richie Sambora on an Ovation double or triple-necked 12-string acoustic depending on which live version you see/hear. Not sure what he used to record the original studio track. "The Chain" is in Em whereas "Wanted Dead or Alive" is in D... if my memory is correct... been a long while since I played either. If I am wrong, which I often am, someone please correct me. I have no doubt that Fleetwood Max probably also influenced Bon Jovi given "The Chain" came out in 1977 on one of their biggest albums 'Rumors' which a lot of those 80s bands would likely have listened to at some point. That album is still influencing bands and that rock/pop rock genre.

I love the Silver Springs version on Japan 45 or Deluxe versions of the Rumors album much more than the live one. It uses the sweet voice that Stevie would lose after damaging her vocal chords. This was released in Japan as a single. Tough to get. I had to buy an import single from Japan. Later they put it on some extended cuts of the album. She got the name, Silver Spring, when driving around the Washington DC Beltway and and saw the sign for Silver Spring, MD. She loved the name.
Think about it that the album Rumors was so good Silver Springs was left off the album. Stevie was very upset about it. In the CD era this would of never happened.

You need to react to Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon LIVE 1976

My first time hearing this song, and my last. Much as I like some of their other songs, this one misses everything.

Before this pop-driven line-up Fleetwood Mac had great success as blues band with Peter Greene.

yeah - except this was waaayyyyy before Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi's pseudo western vibe was a derivative of many other pioneering efforts to re-blend folk-western with mainstream hardrock. This song was a more authentic tap back into a true folk-western source. ....and you could make an argument that it was actually Appalachian-folk rathern than folk-western. Either way, you are hearing the blues bend between the minor-third and the major-third ....the playing with that tonal shift gives that haunting displacement of the key center or focus.
