COP ART: Surveillance, art and the new ethics of data by Kate Crawford

RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) presents a keynote by Kate Crawford, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. Her work is focused on researching the social, political and cultural impact of big data and the network technologies use. Crawford is visiting professor at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), senior fellow at the Information Law Institute at New York University, and she is on the advisory boards of The New Museum’s art and technology incubator NEW INC, The World Economic Forum and the George Soros’ Open Society Foundation. Crawford is a regular writer for several publications like The New York Times and The Atlantic.
Kate Crawford will talk on how our lives are being changed by the rise of machine learning, big data and predictive analytics. The 20th century models of privacy are struggling to keep up with new computation techniques and pervasive networks of surveillance. But artists have been experimenting with these tools in order to ask the hardest question: what will we do about it? In this talk, Crawford will consider the intimate landscapes of data prediction, and how contemporary artists are leading the way in thinking about the ethics of data.
