I really want to see someone put this watch through a really brutal water test. You read soooo many differing reviews about its ok to swim with it, don't swim with it, don't shower with it, shower with it, don't go so many feet underwater with it. I want to know it's real limits. I would try things out myself. But I'm just a paycheck to paycheck living guy and can't afford to buy another watch if I ruin it.
Do not shower with any touchscreen device when using any kind of cleaning agent. From my experience soap cleanses the anti-fat-coating (i don't know the real name, so ill just call it that) off touchscreens. The coating makes your screen easier to clean, without those "streaks" of fat and grease. Drop a single drop of water onto a new phone, and one that has been in use for a couple years (the coating gets slowly fades from normal usage as well) You'll see a kind of lotus-effect on the new one, where the old one the drop just acts like on any other glass. If you use soap, you remove it in an instant - i did that once, i don't recommend it. That being said I have no clue how much "just water" in the pool would destroy such coatings, though I am fairly sure it will be much less destructive than soap-water. That's why: Don't shower with it. Because soap will damage the coating. Do swim with it. Because it's water resistant. Hope that helps ? :)
@@Murv it's called an oleophobic coating and no soap won't damage it more than normal wear or tear in fact soap works by breaking down fats, so it'll clean any oil off the screen and prevent build-up... But it won't affect it any more than the chlorine in the pool, in fact it'll probably be better to make sure the chlorine and salts are properly cleaned off but still the only damage soap will do it make your screen get fingerprints but that will happen eventually anyway
I dont know if you still need input on your question but here is my experience. I had this watch from the release day and I swim with it shower with it 5 no problems so far. The reason why I wanted to watch this video is because I never bothered switching to actually swim workout I waited until auto detection will trigger this workout for me but unfortunately I don't see any laps registered so only thing which I will start doing differently is I will properly start swimming workout before swimming. I have few questions. 1) Can I use this watch in open water and how can I measure my performance since there is no fixed distance as in pool? 2) Is it detect my HR while swimming? 3) Is the GPS record my route in the openwater so calculate my swimming details? 4) Can I use my BT TWS to pick up calls instead of using built in speaker and mic? Thanks in advance for the reply
I've done quite a bit of swimming with the galaxy watch 4. Its a great app, but I've noticed it loses yardage if you do 100 IMs. When you're switching strokes it get's confused. It may have to do with flip turns and how much under water time you have on the lap. Just a note to any high end swimmers out there considering this. It also doesn't work well with kick boards or some 1 armed stroking sets you may do. It seemed to be happier if when you do IMs you do 200s verses 100s. 2 laps of a stroke works better than single laps.
Thank you so much! I'm planning to buy Galaxy watch 4. Really helped me as I'm an avid swimmer and wasn't sure between Garmin Fenix 6S and Galaxy watch 4.
Great video! I'm primarily interested in this watch for swimming.. I really needed to know whether the watch can count distance and laps.. I always loose counting when I swim 60laps of 25m, which equals 1.5km. Gotta loose the extra pounds. And I love the fact that the watch also measures bodyfat %.
A great video. But I am concerned whether the detailed swimming data split by laps is accurate. From your screen, your freestyle duration in the 25-meter pool fluctuates from 26 to 52 seconds per lap, that doesn't look like your real speed and strengthens my concern.
I use this all the time to swim and never have had a problem. Of course, I always have it in Swim Mode, so it has the Water Lock mode. I swim in bright sunlight, so I usually find it impossible to see the screen while I am swimming. This video is helpful because I will set up less data on the screen, so that the type is larger and I can actually see it. While I am swimming, all I want to know is how many laps I have done so far, and how much time I have been swimming.
sorry, which is the difference between the 2 "duration" that are displayed on the screen during the swimming activity? Thanks, I appreciate this review very much
- When swimming we often do drills (only legs, only one arm, ...) and of course the watch won't be able to know since it can only pick the arm movement. What most swim watches do (like Garmin Swim 2) is they allow the user to manually enter the drill log by marking the start time and end time and then entering the distance covered. Can this watch do this too? - Can you review Xiaomi Color 2 Watch?
I was wondering why my calculations weren't showing up. I do kick drills in between a set of 10 laps. Now I know why. Not that I'm training for anything, just swimming to be healthy, but now it makes sense.
thanks for that video. Sorry for this dumb question, but whats with that water lock? do i need to enable it always before going into the water (like, before water touches the watch, no exercise, just in the pool) since i have seen it in the toggles and i truly have no idea. Will it cause any damage to the watch if I dont toggle it?
Great question. Waterlock doesnt change anything other than the facy that it turns on a speaker noise that pushes out water. So you can swim all you want without water lock on, and then after you get out, turn on and off water lock to spray the water out of the speaker grills.
@@Develoquent Many thanks for your answer. As i have read it also disables the touch features, so water is not randomly changing anything on the watch (settings etc.)

@Develoquent do you do longer swimming sessions than 30mins? The water resistant standard sais it is validated for 30 mins. My Active2 got issues after the 50+ minutes. I would pick up a Watch4 just wouldn't like to brick it next time. Thanks for the answer.
My active watch 4 died the same way. It wasn't the first time I swam with it, but it was indeed the first time I swam with it for 1 hour non stop. I just bought a galaxy watch 5 and I'm not afraid to take it to a pool with friends or the beach but I do am worried about taking it to a swimming class. The specs are not super straightforward, you are not supposed to swim with IP68 / ATM5 apparently
I've had the watch 2 and use to take it swimming and working out so it got a lot of water and sweat on it. I would also rinse it after each activity. After about 3 years it wouldn't turn on any nore. Funny enough the screen pop out!!! So I wonder if the 4 is more resistant?
I swim in a 25 meters pool. I have a 150m program that I do 10 times and it should show 1500m, but it is always a couple of 100 meters short. I seem to lose 25m here and there... is there any way to correct this. I love my watch, but found out I also seem to be allergic to something it is made of... probably crome ... so I can not wear it all the time. I hope it counts my steps in my pocket... I can't really walk as my ankle and leg got destroyed a long time ago... so I swim and love it. 1500 in around 50 min for my age is not bad... 71
Awesome to hear swimming is how you keep active despite an ankle injury. I think the watch can miss some laps, especially if your turn arounds arent super obvious to recognize on each lap. Just make sure your lap pool is set to 25 meters and keep it tight on your wrist. If your swim is a leg only swim, expect it to not track it well, since the watch is not moving like a freestyle stroke for example.
Thanks for great video. I used to be able to see the work out screen on Active 2 every 10 min while swimming, but not with Galaxy Watch 4. Why? Although I have set Guide Frequency to 10 min.
Used this watch on 2 days to swim, about 1.5 hours each time. At the end of the 2nd day, the watch was bricked. Had to get a replacement from Samsung. They said there was water damage!
I've had a number of Samsung watches primarily because I use the Samsung phone. Unfortunately all of them have been disaapointing when it comes to measuring workouts. The swimming app is really unreliable.. It doesn't accurately track laps, and it frequently just stops for no apparent reason. The heart rate monitoris also very inaccurate. At at lower or moderate heart rates it works pretty well but at higher heart rates, it reads much higher than it actually is.
Great vid but is it Rally alright if you swimm with it in chlore water and does it damage the watch, is the protection in the galaxy watch 4 the same as in the classic 4 ?
You can swim just fine in chlorine water. The watch 4 and 4 classic are the exact same watch internally, just different frame. They will both work great in pools
another quest.. when water lock mode is on, the watch goes to watch face pointers, if you spin the bezel, it will enter in menu or even rotating nothing happens ?^thx
Correct. If you are using the default swim workout, dont worry about pausing, then watch will auto pause for you when you stop swimming. Technically you do not need the waterlock on while you are swimming. You can get away with using the Swim.com app and track your swims with that app. then you will be able to wipe off the screen and pause when you need.
I find that when I do the breast stroke it records backstroke. Since I use a snorkel I can understand this., and I am good with it. There is a learning curve and I am getting better with the watch all the time. With wet fingers it can be hard to change the face, but sooner or later I get it. I like the fact that when I complete a lap info will pop up and update the work out. No reply is needed. Getting better with it every session.
Is there any way how to create custom (guided) workout in Samsung Health so I don't have to remember all the steps? I just want my watch tells me what to do from warm-up through workout till cool down.
Can I use it for water aerobics? My swim app on Samsung health does not have all those workout choices. Where might I find those choices to add. Only have laps
Hi I actually decided to buy a Galaxy 4 after your review, but to my surprise it doesn't record intervals as i.e. Apple watch does. I checked into json files and rest time is always set to zero. Laps count is quite accurate but interval training is not recorded as it should. If this field is available in json files and not presented in Samsung health I suspect it was left behind on purpose and the algorithm seems to export only zero value. I hope it's just a temporary oversight or future fix, because rest time info is needed as well as interval grouping regardless how the sets are conceived (10X75, 10x125, 25+175 at different speeds etc..)
I have a small pool about 10m length... The minimum length option is 15m..can I edit the length after the swim in the apps to calculate the correct distance? Garmin connect allows editing of length on the apps. Anyone can give an insight.. Much appreciated.
Super accurate! If you are swimming for fastest lap though, you may not have perfect accuracy. but for the average swimmer, this is a great watch for swimming laps!
What did you find to be the length of time you can safley swim with it? If you're getting into an hour long lap session, will it last the distance in the water?
Does anyone know what the minimum length of the pool is? Huawei do not support pool lengths less than 15m. I assume they assume that people only use public or gym pools.
Hi there, I have a question. How long can you swim with it to avoid any water damage. I read that no longer than 30 mins and your video, funny enough shows a workout of 30 mins. Just wondering if is just a concidence or it is mean to be to avoid any potential water damage. On a separate note great video and very informative and useful. Best Cesar
I workout longer that 30 minutes with no issues. They say that so the chances are slim to none that samsung would have to pay for a replacement. You can go much more than an hour a day for months +
Hi sorry for interrupt. My Samsung watch active 4 got water damage for 2 times because I use it for 45 mins. The seller said its because I swim more than 30 mins and samsung want me to bear the repair cost of the water damage which cost 80% of the original cost. I really very disappointed. So the 2nd time of water damage which happens today, I struggle to pay another time again.🤬

Does the GW 4 records the laps when you do a freestyle flip? On the active 2 it doesn't recognize that kind of turn, is this the same on the new watch?
It's really frustrating that Strava doesn't have an option for swimming on this watch. The Samsung health app is pretty good, but you can't share it to Strava properly either.
I know the manual says up to 30 minutes and i saw your workout also was just about 30 minutes but would say its safe to swim constantly for 1 hour without having to worried about the watch getting water damage ? (indoor pool 25m length)

hi guys , I used this watch for a couple of months to swim in the pool but I noticed that in swimming the calorie count was really too high .. it was not realistic .. have they solved the problem with software updates?
No. I just got one and I've been swimming for about a month. I was so happy to see 300+ calories burned in 40min of swimming. Then I had to think about it and realized thats impossible. LOL
For some reason my watch is not able to track the number of lengths accurately, often missing entire lengths. I need to use it more to see if there is a pattern to this.
I find that when I'm in the water I cannot use sliding the finger to activate functions. After flailing back and forth on the watch face I find myself in a place other than where I want to be. Then the whole workout is cancelled. Also is there a way to erase the failed attempts to record a workout?

I can't do this without turning off the water lock, and then on again during my workout. Unless you have a solution Samsung has to do a software update to Pause my workout, for my shower, or they will have warranty claims
water lock does not 'lock' water out.. you can swim with water lock off.. the only thing water lock does is activate speakers in the watch which blow water out for a few seconds.. go swim, then when you are done, turn water lock on and back off to activate the water eject speakers.

Great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I've had the watch 2 and use to take it swimming and working out so it got a lot of water and sweat on it. I would also rinse it after each activity. After about 3 years it wouldn't turn on any nore. Funny enough the screen pop out!!! So I wonder if the 4 is more resistant?
Can I use it longer than 30 minutes? Or there is a risk if I use it longer in the pool? Thanks!
Still an issue with watch not reading kickboard laps. APple watches don’t either, apparently
Yeah since there are no arm movements involved
@@Develoquent I saw a woman at the gym with her smart watch safety pinned around her ankle. I guess that's one solution...
I don't have any of these features on my SG watch 4. I have samsung health and my listed activities, but no laps or meters. I have the water lock.
Can you set it to recognize different strokes?
Yes
Can you listen to music while using the swimming programming mode?
Thanks for great video. I used to be able to see the work out screen on Active 2 every 10 min while swimming, but not with Galaxy Watch 4. Why? Although I have set Guide Frequency to 10 min.
Thank you for this!
Used this watch on 2 days to swim, about 1.5 hours each time. At the end of the 2nd day, the watch was bricked. Had to get a replacement from Samsung. They said there was water damage!
Thank a lot
Pretty sure the watch is rated for 30min. swims and only 1,5 m deep.
@@Develoquent bro thanks for the Fast answer im on vacation and about to jumper into the Pool big thanks !!!
another quest.. when water lock mode is on, the watch goes to watch face pointers, if you spin the bezel, it will enter in menu or even rotating nothing happens ?^thx
Good video only problem u can’t pause swim without ejecting water taking to long ?
@@Develoquent It worked on first day but not since hope they sort it out
Thanks
I am unable to see the Split Summary. How to view that, as I am getting Notes section after heart rate and nothing else. Request further guidance
Getting better with it every session.
is this also the watch that you can add phone service on? and therefore independent from the smartphone with calls and sms.
Have you compared against the garmin swim 2?
Is there any way how to create custom (guided) workout in Samsung Health so I don't have to remember all the steps? I just want my watch tells me what to do from warm-up through workout till cool down.
There's no way in samsung health but swim.com app will do that for you
can we used galaxy watch to dive if yes is there a way toc heck how deep are you in the water?
There is no functionality to determine your depth that i know of
If you want your workout on Strava and on Samsung Health is it possible to link each other or do you have to activate both apps?
Can I use it for water aerobics? My swim app on Samsung health does not have all those workout choices. Where might I find those choices to add. Only have laps
You need to go into your phone and add the workout there
Hi I actually decided to buy a Galaxy 4 after your review, but to my surprise it doesn't record intervals as i.e.
How do you get the galaxy watch 4 to register swimming laps when using a kickboard or doing stuff like superman drills?
I have a small pool about 10m length... The minimum length option is 15m..can I edit the length after the swim in the apps to calculate the correct distance? Garmin connect allows editing of length on the apps. Anyone can give an insight.. Much appreciated.
Wow didn't know my watch was that accurate!! Thanks bro!!
Super accurate! If you are swimming for fastest lap though, you may not have perfect accuracy. but for the average swimmer, this is a great watch for swimming laps!
Hi! With the water lock on, how long can you swim?
How long can you stay under water with it I tend to swim for a hour at a time so was just wondering
What did you find to be the length of time you can safley swim with it? If you're getting into an hour long lap session, will it last the distance in the water?
Yes
Another informative video! a couple notes maybe bring more energy and excitement to it and throw some ads on the beginning
Will do, thanks for the input
Can i surfing with This watch without damage ?
Does anyone know what the minimum length of the pool is? Huawei do not support pool lengths less than 15m. I assume they assume that people only use public or gym pools.
Yeah if it's too small you aren't going to get accurate readings.
Best
Cesar
I workout longer that 30 minutes with no issues. They say that so the chances are slim to none that samsung would have to pay for a replacement. You can go much more than an hour a day for months +
It's waterproif for 30 minutes 50 meters deep, your normal swimming on surface has no problem with water pressure
@@JacElvireWong the tech on active is different to the one on watch4
New user here and having trouble posting. Tried twice! Once under my name and then changed to initials tc, and post disappeared!
Tried again and not sure where that went?
Thanks tc
That is weird. Well thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked the video. You will like the GW4 for swimming. It works great!
I see the notification that you recently sent, but it isnt opened when i click on the notification. Haha
Any issues on the back cover? I have my active 2 but sweat peeled of the back cover
No issues on the back. It's just a ceramic glass back
Hi! Is it possible to pair this watch with Samsung Tab S6 without a phone?
No! Unfortunatelly it is not.
Does the GW 4 records the laps when you do a freestyle flip? On the active 2 it doesn't recognize that kind of turn, is this the same on the new watch?
Yes it tracks it
It's really frustrating that Strava doesn't have an option for swimming on this watch. The Samsung health app is pretty good, but you can't share it to Strava properly either.
Is there a problem if I have screen prottector applied on my watch 4 and I go in The swimming pool?
No it will work just fine. You can change the display sensitivity if you are having issues
Has anyone use Strava for swimming with their GW4? Distance is so off on mine 😅
Does GW3 do the same?
Which Samsung mobile phone do you use?
Galaxy Note 10 plus 256gb 12gb ram
@@Develoquent same, amazing phone. Bought the keychron k3 after your videos on it keep up the good work sir.
Does it have rest time?
I know the manual says up to 30 minutes and i saw your workout also was just about 30 minutes but would say its safe to swim constantly for 1 hour without having to worried about the watch getting water damage ? (indoor pool 25m length)
I have the same question. Please, somebody can help us?
@@rodrigoconde5044 so since my comment i been using the watch for 3 weeks swimming up to 1,5 hours every day. No problem! Sometimes i even forget to start the waterproof mode after i already jumped in th water and no issues at all
@@down6ftdeep138 Thank you, I was wondering as well
@@down6ftdeep138 thanks for sharing that, would you mind giving a 1 year update? did the watch keep up with your swimming habit?
I work with fish I'm around alot of water and get my hands wet and bloody alot will I be good using it ? Someone?
Id be a little worried with getting fish gute crammed into the side speaker but i think for water, you will be ok. Chances of ruining the watch go up with dirty water
Quick tip, set the playback speed to 1.5x and this guy will sound more like a human.
Very insightful!
Thanks Cari! :)
Related, does the Huawei Band 6 show swim lap count on its display in real time? May be challenging to get that tracker band in USA. Seems GW4 used to be able but not updated firmware (mistake)
great video, bro, really helpful. Liked, subscribed and turned on notifs with pleasure :)
Thank! I appreciate it. It helps out the Channel
really helpful, thanks
Sure thing, thanks for watching!
Thanks for such a detail review! Is your watch still working? I swim 5 days a week for at least an hour in chlorine & salted outdoor pool. I had a OnePlus watch and it just died on my after exactly 1 year and 1 month, and of course, the warranty has expired! Yet my FitBit Inspire HR is still running beautifully!
Mine still works flawlessly! That's awesome. Thanks for watching
I swim in an 18m pool but can’t change the setting to less than 20m
hi guys , I used this watch for a couple of months to swim in the pool but I noticed that in swimming the calorie count was really too high .. it was not realistic .. have they solved the problem with software updates?
Make sure you have your lap length set to the proper length!
Great ♥
I find that when I'm in the water I cannot use sliding the finger to activate functions. After flailing back and forth on the watch face I find myself in a place other than where I want to be. Then the whole workout is cancelled. Also is there a way to erase the failed attempts to record a workout?
Go into your phone later in Samsung health to delete the workout you don't want
@@Develoquent thanks.
Hey you got the same watch face as me
Shout out to the Legacy Center!!
Hi thank you for the info , I have Galaxy watch 4 , I would like to synchronize my swimming to strava , have you got any idea how to do that .
Thank u
I killed an active 1 and then 2 when swimming.,. Wondering if 4 last more........ I really love my watch, except when they die when I do my favorite sport
Ive used my galaxy watch 4 at least 10 times for 30 minute swim workouts and i havent had any issues yet! Just make sure to use the water lock after to shoot the water out of the side.
I didn't turn the audio coaches off and weirdly you can hear it under water
It seems a bit hit and miss in detecting when you are resting. Has anyone else had that experience?
So 20m is the shortest distance you can select. Stinks, my pool at home is only 36 feet..about 12m
Maybe you can do 24 (double the length)
@@Develoquent I guess and then just either divide my distances by 2 or multiply time per lap and SWOLF by 2. It still will record as you turn as a 24m length. just would be nice to have the actuals recorded
Interisting that you can go swimming with this having only 5 ATM water resistance, usually for normal watches you would take a diver at 20 ATM
nah man, i got couple of different watches, some graded for 5 atm and some for 30 atm. i swim quite often in the pool with my watch on, they are all fine. as long as you arent doing any kind of diving activities, most watches should be fine
@@isac4769is your watch still working fine?
can i swim in the sea with samsung galaxy watch 4?
Yeah but just know that sea water isnt as forgiving as chlorine water!
Samsung health app with Samsung Watch pro 6
Problem: With my old Galaxy Fit 2 Pro I was able to activate my swim workout screen, then put it on pause while I entered the shower, and then start the swim workout when I got into the pool.
@@Develoquent I am then touching my screen, which should be locked out also. The point is that I should be able to push One of the buttons on the side of the watch to pause my workout, temporarily if I like. Hold the same button longer and it finishes my workout. I just want to shower before and afterwards with a water lock on.
