There is a perfectly fine reason why Pettersson was not rated highly by many listings and that is because he played in Europe rather than in North American junior leagues. Unless the prospect looks really good in the league they play in in Europe he is slightly overlooked. In the same breath we see how experts in Finland/Sweden tend to rate the prospects playing in their league higher than those who play in the across the pond as they observe the players more closely. A good example of this is Sebastian Aho who most Finnish experts were already raving about and were talking how Carolina got a steal whilst ignoring some of the talent that was playing overseas in their draft year such as Jokiharju and Välimäki (they started to get more hype after the draft of course in Finland).
I admit I was also one of the “who the hell is this kid?” When we drafted him. Even when he tore up the SHL, I was still doubtful and thought “he’s too skinny for the NHL. He’s gonna get demolished and pushed around.” That was until I saw him in preseason doing all kinds of dangles against Edmonton. Was even more impressed when he did it against Florida during the season. Amazing. He has such a nice shot. Having two guys (Boeser and Pettersson) with howitzer of a shot is a blessing.
Us swedes saw this coming miles away. Elias Pettersson won the points league with 56 goals in 44 games as a 18 year old. And his playoffs performance was nuts, the kid was literally on fire. Hey Hockey Guy. I've been watching this channel for about a year and a half and it's been fun watching you get more comfortable and confident with your videos. If you don't mind I'd like to suggest a video topic that I would LOVE to hear your prospective on. You could ware a Capitals jersey with a tinfoil hat for this one. I would like to hear your thoughts on Alex Ovechkin quite clearly being a field agent for the KGB. Lets look at the facts. He's a super athlete, who has no problems getting physical with his oppents, much like an ideal KGB agent would be. He has played his entire NHL career in Washington, what better place for a KGB agent to play in? Despite reports that the Capitals should trade OV after each playoff loss they never did. Why? Was Lynn Leonsis get paid off by KGB alumni, Vladimir Putin? I don't know, but maybe. Also he plays in the same division as the Rangers, Devils and Islanders and who got arrested in NYC by the FBI in the summer of 2017? A bunch of Russian spies. Were these spies exchanging information with OV in the regular season? I can't say for sure that they were, but I also can't say for sure that they weren't either. And just why was OV soooo happy when he won the Stanley cup? Was it because he finally proved to everyone that he was a champion, that he played with heart, that he could lead a team to the top of the mountain, hights that he had never made it to in his professional career. OR was it because after all these years he finally was going to get access to the White House where he could plant bugs and take photo's of sensitive information. Think about it, the answer's clear as day. Anyway thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos. I hope at the very least this comment makes you smile
as much as i like watching/reading draft rankings, the lists NHL teams have are so much different. according to Friedman and Marek on the 31 thoughts podcast discussed how at least 1, possibly 2 teams, had Petterson ranked 1st overall. no one expected barret hayton at 5th this past draft, or Dubois at 3rd in 2016. this hockey prospect site seems to be as close as you can get so i’ll have to look into them, but really no one outside the NHL has any real idea on who’s going to go where
My prediction before the draft was that the Canucks were either going for Mittlestadt or Pettersson or Glass. Draft picks 4 through 10 were interchangeable so seeing Pettersson (rated at #8) was understandable. If Benning never got Dahlen for Burrows i would never have guessed Pettersson. And with the video the Benning getting excited over Pettersson during the draft you can tell that he scouted the hell out of him. But, i never would've guessed that he'd break records in the SHL and NHL.. I thought a 1st line center was pushing it
What people either forget or don't know is that Pettersson was a dominant player as a 17/18 year old in the Swedish tier 2 league, playing against professional men despite his size. You don't dominate that league at that age without exceptional talent. Since 2011/2012, only one other U19 player has had more points than Pettersson in this league during a season and that's William Karlsson. Pettersson clocked in at 41P in 43GP, and Karlsson at 45 in 46GP. Also, for comparison, William Nylander had 27 points in 35GP as U19 and Filip Forsberg had 33 pts in 38 GP as an U19 player.

I remember watching that draft with my dad and we were pretty shocked at the pick, i had no idea who he was at the time and we both had the same thing in mind, like "here we go again with another soft swede." So I hope no ones blaming you for that lol
I always think of Datsyuk, Daigle and now the recent history of the Edmonton Oilers picks when I hear people questioning how great or bad a drafted player is going to be. The visuals are known on how a player plays, but there are way too many intangibles that are not seen when dealing with players that age.
the one good move our gm made other then hughes lol i couldnt imagine our team without those 2 .... i hope they both stay for a long time, i have a feeling petey will, swedes have the history of been super loyal to our city not sure why but im not complaining n im sure rutherford told hank n danny to give petey "the talk" LOL
Im swedish and I did see all the matches Elias played in the swedish elite series and What I saw was amazing, he was the only reason for that team winning the title and he made the most points before the playoffs, and he was only 18, the swedish elite series are hard!!!!! Playing among super skilled players, and people are amazed that he was picked up early in the draft? I dont get it
What is the exact address of the "Hockey Prospects" site that Shannon is talking about. It would be nice to always give addresses as a reference in the description when they are central to the discussion .. yes? Cheers
It’s okay. There were several teams at the top of the draft who underestimated Pettersson as well. Though, I will say, I’m not at all unhappy with Nolan Patrick. He’s been very good since about the halfway point of last season. He’s been excellent in developing a two way game and becoming a quality faceoff guy in a short period. And I’m sure New Jersey and their fans feel the same way with Hischier. The Stars have to ecstatic with Heiskanen, who looks like a stud. Colorado is the one team in front who may be seriously regretting skipping Pettersson... but Makkar has a very high ceiling. Either way, Canucks fans have to be jumping for joy knowing that they have three building blocks up front with Boeser, Pettersson and Horvat.
I loved Pettersson at the draft... I almost took him in third place in my fantasy league and I don't understand why you think Juolevi is a bust... He had a great season last year and now he has 11 pts in 14 games in the AHL at 20 years old...
I read two articles before the draft that he might be the best player in the draft which got me to look at some of his highlights. His skill wowed me. I thought they could be right. But I think they had his weight at 154. Thin as a rail. So I questioned if he could ever get the weight to play at the NHL level. Even after I saw great skill, he still seemed to thin to really dominate. Great players have high hockey IQ. He does great for his weight and just keeps getting better like Hughes. All the negativity was his weight. Believe it or not this is how I envisioned Pettersson. I just did not think it would happen, and Hughes is better than advertised. For a little while I thought he finally hit the wall and he would not get better. I think he is one of the better two way players in the league. They can steal pucks pretty good. Now I question his ceiling. How much better can he get? I was sort of happy we got him. But he answered the bell his rookie season. And thinking that they are not building around him. I feel much better now. One more good defender and we could make a run. First have to get off to a better start.
idk how people(and i mean "trusted hockey men" who job it is to know this stuff) slept that hard on this kid when he already played a full year with grown ass men and was top ten in scoring(even if it was second division its still grown men at 16-17).
Remember when I said after watching Pettersson ONCE... "He'll win the Calder easily if he stays healthy"? I don't listen to ANY of the so-called "experts". You should try it. It's so much fun when you get to laugh at all of them.
I don’t blame you Shannon, the Preds drafted his brother Emil and it took him 4 years to even jump over, now he doesn’t great in Milwaukee but he’s trade bait for scoring depth. You might still be right I mean he’s so small be could end up Bured with injuries
Size is always going to be a thing it's one of the things you can't teach. As good as petterson has been he needs to be more skilled than guys who are bigger and stronger than him to overcome his slight frame. Size can sometimes make up for being less skilled, by just being harder to knock off the puck or push you out of position. If you have a battle for a puck in the corner who would you rather in there. Pettersson or Boeser/Horvat
Mittelstadt is a star in his own right. I think there are a lot of people getting carried away with the hot start for Pettersson which overlooks just how solid this rookie class is.
Never understood why Pettersson wasn't a top 3 ranked player in his draft. Timrå IK Allsvenskan 43 19 22 41 14 15 in his draft year. works out for us though.
He's like Luka Doncic. Incredible. Just because they played the Sharks last night: On Jumbo's debut in 1997, EP40 wasn't even developed within his dad's balls.
Lets be honest, no one ever knows how prospects will turn out. Outside of the can't miss like McDavid, Matthews, etc. its all a gamble to whos going to be better than who.
why do you speak like juolevi is s bust. He's only 20 years old, playing his first year in North America.. as a Dman he has 11 pts in 15 games. Thats actually pretty good. He's also 6'3, 200lbs. good size
I think one thing a lot of draft analysts don't take into account is the player's drive and ambition. What's going on between the ears. At the draft Pettersson did not have a good shot.
Haha that's hilarious! Entertaining conspiracy theory :D
Can't wait for the review tonight 😁. Go Canucks Go.
All that matters is that he is a great player!
as much as i like watching/reading draft rankings, the lists NHL teams have are so much different. according to Friedman and Marek on the 31 thoughts podcast discussed how at least 1, possibly 2 teams, had Petterson ranked 1st overall. no one expected barret hayton at 5th this past draft, or Dubois at 3rd in 2016. this hockey prospect site seems to be as close as you can get so i’ll have to look into them, but really no one outside the NHL has any real idea on who’s going to go where
My prediction before the draft was that the Canucks were either going for Mittlestadt or Pettersson or Glass.
I thought a 1st line center was pushing it
Watching some of your old vids, Shannon, at it shows you’ve lost a lot of weight. Great job!
Big of you to post this.
Now do the Ovechkin is not Generation and Malkin is redact video.
Just rattling your cage- Love all the content. My #1 source of Hockey news
I will never discuss generational players vs franchise players again.
Canucks already drafted a guy with a back issue in the past in the top 10, Cody Hodgson? Anyone where is he now?
I remember watching that draft with my dad and we were pretty shocked at the pick, i had no idea who he was at the time and we both had the same thing in mind, like "here we go again with another soft swede." So I hope no ones blaming you for that lol
I always think of Datsyuk, Daigle and now the recent history of the Edmonton Oilers picks when I hear people questioning how great or bad a drafted player is going to be. The visuals are known on how a player plays, but there are way too many intangibles that are not seen when dealing with players that age.
why is the first half of this video reading other people's draft rankings?
the one good move our gm made other then hughes lol i couldnt imagine our team without those 2 .... i hope they both stay for a long time, i have a feeling petey will, swedes have the history of been super loyal to our city not sure why but im not complaining n im sure rutherford told hank n danny to give petey "the talk" LOL
This kid is a LEGEND!!
And now, 8 months later we have added grit and toughness in free agency...almost as if there is a plan in place
Conclusion: good decision by Benning at the time.
I dont get it
I hated the makar pick now after 2 years and watching him in the ncaa, I love the makar pick now, funny how that works
As a Canucks fan my reaction after they drafted him was “wtf”. I expected them to draft either glass or valardi
Pettersson might be the best player in the NHL in a few years. None of the other rookies are even close to that potential
Shannon, just curious why did they have Veleno going in the second?
Played 11 games and has a hilite Reel that is better than most ten year veterans. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
Like your shirt Shannon.
On your knees! I'm swedish! Lol
Now he's right about Pettersson
idk how people(and i mean "trusted hockey men" who job it is to know this stuff) slept that hard on this kid when he already played a full year with grown ass men and was top ten in scoring(even if it was second division its still grown men at 16-17).
Berard with the Sens was another example of a mega-talent who was taken out by injury. Better than Daigle who just had no desire.
Well, now you are wro... Ohh, a Tool-shirt? Hello, my friend
You were not alone. There is a video on youtubers reacting to Canucks draft on pettersson and u are in there 2 u should try to watch it.
Remember when I said after watching Pettersson ONCE...
"He'll win the Calder easily if he stays healthy"?
I don't listen to ANY of the so-called "experts".
You should try it. It's so much fun when you get to
laugh at all of them.
So basically you just go off of other people’s predictions lol
I was getting roasted by random people on twitter for a tweet saying should’ve taken mittlestadt.
Hi, I'm nobody.
I was 100% sure that Vancouver had their hands on 2018/19 calder trophy winner. Already in May/june 2018.
We need a EP40 video 2023
Love the shirt
I wasn’t disappointed with the pick but I must say I didn’t do as much research as you. Saw videos and he looked pretty darn good though
Please, dont put so much pressure on the kid. Let him have fun a couple of years and you never
regretting that
He's like Luka Doncic. Incredible. Just because they played the Sharks last night: On Jumbo's debut in 1997, EP40 wasn't even developed within his dad's balls.
I got on the train before late last season cause I live in Sweden. And Petterson was 🔥🔥 all season for the Lakers
In a team that was already good enough to have you on the ice and still win games
My 3 favourite teams are the Vancouver canucks Edmonton oilers Pittsburgh Penguins
Is that a STIGA board?
Lets be honest, no one ever knows how prospects will turn out. Outside of the can't miss like McDavid, Matthews, etc. its all a gamble to whos going to be better than who.
why do you speak like juolevi is s bust.
He's only 20 years old, playing his first year in North America.. as a Dman he has 11 pts in 15 games. Thats actually pretty good. He's also 6'3, 200lbs. good size
Be patient with D.. look at hedman.. ohlund..
He would have played games this year if it wasn’t for his health issue.
What is the book on Juolevi? I haven’t heard anything about him.
He's allowed a few short-handed goals down here in Utica.
