I havecan old set of Prang watercolors. 12 pans. They are about 30 years old. I think they have honey in them. I didn't use them for years. Last year I purchased an Artist Loft set. 12 half pans. I wanted to try watercolors again. I find these lower cost sets sre fine for me and my sketch books. Plus, I actually use them! If they were more expensive I might think I have to save them for special occasions. Nope! Enjoy what you have!
A wonderful philosophy
Thank you for touching on the ethical considerations when purchasing paint brushes. There are so many great synthetic brushes available now that I wish I'd known about sooner in my art journey.
My pleasure
I like Meeden products as they’re affordable and decent quality. Their pochade box is lovely at half the price of other brands for what really is the same box. Great review, and I think I’ll get those brushes to add to my take anywhere kit. Thank you for giving a detailed review .
The paints reminded me a bit of the Grumbacher Academy paints I use. Being on a fixed income I can’t quite afford the ones I want; Daniel Smith or even Paul Rubens. But that’s okay since I’m a hobbyist. Thanks for a great review !
What a great review! This looks like a good set for someone just beginning to use watercolour. I used student grade colours for a long time and they were fine for quick ink and wash sketching. Now that I've moved on to artist grade I certainly appreciate what they can do. Re brushes: I have 2 Kolinsky sable brushes that are lovely but my cheap mop brushes work almost as well for loose sketching. I also have a basic set of synthetic brushes that I like a lot. I think for quick ink and wash sketching there's less need for the very best of the best, especially on a limited budget.
Yes, totally agree with your thoughts on brushes. For quick Sketching they only need to be good enough!
I own two sets of paints; an expensive professional brand, and the very paints you are reviewing in this video. I have surprised myself over and over by using the Meeden set in preference to my other! I also prefer the Meeden paint box for both quality and price.
Thanks for sharing!
Really good review. As a beginner I would ‘probably’ buy this. But I do prefer to buy local if I can.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Well explained.
My pleasure!
For me, tools are where I spend more money. Paper first them brushes. I love my Princeton Neptune brushes. ❤❤❤ High quality synthetic brushes that work almost as well as my Kolinsky brushes. I now use Daniel Smith and Windsor Newton pro watercolors. But I use a limited pallete of less than 10 colors. Most days I use my limited 6 pan pallete 3 cools and 3 warm colors, all red ,yellow, blue.
Thanks for sharing!!
OK, I'm sold, Toby. I put in my order for this set. I can't wait to try it out. 👨🎨
Hope you enjoy it!
Really a lot of information. Thank you.
Awesome. Love a review. ❤
Hehe
I do believe the paper may be Baohong (???) student grade (under an affiliate name) which is comparable to Arches, imho.
Inexpensive doesn’t always mean “cheap”.
China is the biggest grower of cotton whereas cotton doesn’t grow in Europe. I would expect it to be good grade at low cost. I’d be okay with the paper for certain … probably would like the brushes. The paint? Jury is still out on that one.
That's a useful point ☝️ thanks
Am I crazy, or does that 24 half pan pallet have 26 half pans??
It does, because they've put them in the wrong way round
Yes. I have this tin and it comes with 26 plus it fits another 12 half pans in the center. It’s wonderful.
Would try the paper & ceramic pallet but not a fan of these paints. No granulation & the black must have lots of black ink!
Fair points!
Do you let your ink line work dry before painting?
Sort of... It tends to dry quite quickly so I can essentially just get on with jt
What brand of ink do suggest?
Try this th-cam.com/video/JUy2_CuSMCI/w-d-xo.html
I saw these brushes on another channel a few days ago.
You watch other channels? Traitor 😲 knowing your style, technique, knowledge etc they're not for you. But they are beginner friendly
@@TobySketchLoose Guilty as charged 😄
@@SketchesnScrubs Hi Sketches 👋🏼. I’m everywhere on TH-cam, apparently 😂
First?
I think so!
