When talking about nuclear proliferation, it always worth noting that Ukraine did have nuclear weapons in the past, but agreed to exchange it for guarantees of territorial integrity. USA and Russia both were guarantors of this deal.
Abandonment of Ukraine by US means that these guarantees are worthless, and only shown all countries that nuclear weapon is the only working deterrent. It's bad start, if USA plans to convince some new countries to give up their nuclear programs in exchanges of "guarantees". I expect many countries already started their programs after invasion by one guarantor and lack of any serious reaction from others.

That requires uninterrupted aid from the west which is far from guaranteed. The EU membership has proved a poison pill for many Eastern European countries. On signing the EU agreement, EU made goods could enter Ukraine tax free but not Ukrainian goods into the EU. In return for tax free access for European goods into the EU, the EU allowed Ukrainian citizens to enter into the EU live and work there. With the 2022 invasion Ukrainian citizens are now allowed access to unemployment and other benefits within the EU.
What has happened is the EU gets free market access and cheap labor from Eastern Europe in expanding.

Demilitarised zone along the current frontline stationed by European troops means NATO troops/hostile forces right at the border of Russian-held territories, meaning Russia has to permanently place forces all along the 1300km long frontline and spend enormous expense to repair all the war torn infrastructures. This is a worse situation since NATO troops are actually closer to Moscow now and the expense to maintain such a defence will put a great toll on the already battered Russian economy. So no wonder Putin outright rejected it.

    • @ravensblade
      @ravensblade 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

But Russia is not worried of that invasion. It's shown clearly with how they quite easily abandoned their position with existing NATO-Russia border to transfer troops to Ukraine. US can spin the narrative anyway they want. just watch, in the next year, US media will be talking like Ukraine is the most corrupt state in the world unworthy of saving. this is what they did with Afghanistan and Vietnam. US doesn't care about Ukraine, Ukraine is just the fall guy, and when US narrative change and Ukraine is seen by the world as the most corrupt state, you think EU can still support it? EU without it own narrative control is doom to accept whatever position US wants. even if it is a shitty one. and Ukraine, can struggle just like Cuba can struggle against the US, but it will never be able to win. US is never going to give gitmo back to Cuba, and Ukraine can kiss Donbass goodbye regardless of how unhappy they are about it, because they just don't have the means to change anything.

Both countries are getting absolutely destroyed. But at the end of this, Ukraine has many friends and admirers across the world and Russia is widely hated.
It would’ve been a masterstroke if it had went down the way Crimea did. But he misjudged the Ukrainians and the World’s desire to stop a conqueror. It has turned out to be the greatest blunder. A pretty spot on assessment I'd say. Just a few points to add to what you have said. 1) Trump's first term it would (in retrospect) seem that he was a bit too politically naive about how politicians operate. He picked a side on whatever subject, and kept to that until the bitter end. Whereas politicians will flip & flop to whichever side is most profitable (in more than monetary sense). As you mentioned, many of his anti-ukranian cabinet was supportive until Trump started surging again, then they changed. 2) What is happening with Ukraine is a trial of how things will go with China. If Putin decides not to play ball with Trump, it will make Trump look bad. Trump does not like that kind of thing, he will take it personally. What does that mean? Well, if Putin does not 'do as it is told' then he will make them bend the knee. Likely turning Ukraine armed to the teeth or supporting EU going in with the objective to 'finish it. now.' Trump's own personal pride will supersede any kind of foreign policy. 3) I don't think Putin CAN even end the war if he wanted to. The whole country is in a war economy, Even the US had issues after WW2 ended with unemployment & whatnot. Iran is not particularly interested in a land war with Jordan to attack Israel, so other than Azerbaijan, Russia does not have many neighboring countries that it can throw into a quick proxy war to spool down their economy into something else. 4) The weapons going to Ukraine are mostly EOL that had to be replaced anyhow. The weapons production has expanded significantly for the first time in over 30 years. Not a low intensity anti-terror/insurgency war where materiel consumption is very low. This war is more representative of what a war with china would look like. Those weapon manufacturers need the expansion if they are going to supply on that scale. It takes years to do that, which Europe found out the hard way with artillery shells. There is a possible political way to spin helping Ukraine / europe with arms as a means to compete with china. Would not be surprised if EU makes an arrangement to buy tremendous volume of weapons for Ukraine and lets the USA profit from it, all the while building up for China. Effectively making EU pay for the USA to upgrade its agedout manufacturing. It would not be even that hard of a sell, because it would still be USA hands off with ukraine while also *theoretically* helping them to win faster. All I'm saying is: Politians change sides faster than I change socks, and if it can be spun into some kind of win, particularly a profitable one, Trump may go for it. He is 'anti-war' & 'anti-interventionist' yet also, used tomohawk missiles on Syria gov when they gassed their own city. He is mostly against Ukraine because they refused to do what he wanted in terms of Hunter Biden, and Putin offered some sympathy/camaraderie. But the moment that turns into humiliation infront of his supporters? That's going out the window.

China by both sides though more heavily right wing is viewed as highly dangerous.

A strong bottom line is this: Trump/the US does not have a lot of leverage towards Ukraine, since the EU will continue to support it no matter what. The US - however - has a *lot* of leverage against the Kremlin, being able to threaten it not only with material support for Ukraine - but also a sliding scale of direct support.
We've seen that Biden - while pro-Ukrainian - has been incredibly careful not to rock the boat. Trump on the other hand has never seemed afraid to ruffle some feathers and jump over red lines.
Opinions aside, the facts of the situation mean that threats to Russia are infinitely more effective than threats to Ukraine. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Trump ends up making some grand gesture like using F-35's to destroy a certain bridge just to force Putler to the negotiating table.
Without the Kerch bridge, the entire southern forces would be nearly entirely dependant on supplies by sea - something the battered remnant of the Black Sea Fleet would likely fail to facilitate. Cessation of hostilities and subsequent Turkish lifting of the naval blockade would suddenly become a VERY strong incentive to force Putler to end the conflict one way or the other.

And the GOP didn't even have control of the House or Senate when the war began, and from 2023-present has only had narrow control of the House and didn't have control of the Senate. With what army is Ukraine supposed to retake the Donbas and Crimea? They were given hundreds of tanks, jets, artillery, and more, and their military is bled white of manpower; beating Russia in attritional war is like beating Lizzo in a hotdog eating competition, it's fighting to their strengths. Expecting prolonged war to benefit Ukraine at this point is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. A 20 year ban on joining NATO just puts the war on hold for 15-30 years. Russia will still be a corrupt 3rd world petrostate by then, perhaps in that time Ukraine will stop being one too because it will have had time to get its act together by then; if they can achieve that, then buying time benefits Ukraine much more than it benefits Russia.

    • @102728
      @102728 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Russia already is a corrupt 3rd world petrostate, Ukraine is equally as devastated. Russia can just repeat when US-China tensions rise, maintaining that manpower advantage they have. Meanwhile, Ukraine would be cut out of NATO membership, and guarantees are flimsy.
No, this war needs to be won, and if the US won't support Ukraine, Europe will have to.

    • @mattbowdenuh
      @mattbowdenuh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Short term time benefits Russia. A pause during negotiations means no burn rate. Russia is by far recruiting more and producing more than Ukraine or Ukraine receiving in aid. The reason why it's a stalemate is exactly due to the higher losses of Russia. Without any loses during a negotiation time frame of about a year, Russia can simply walk away then and be in a much better position for military operations.
So it would not surprise me if there's a pause, then Russia walks away, then has actual strategic military success after that period of time that they used to re-equip and increase their number of battalions.
But long term, in terms of decades, you are right. Russia screwed themselves in the long run. But they know this, too. So the only option is to try to get as much now that they can.

There are 25+ US-funded biolabs in Ukraine which if breached would release & spread deadly pathogens to US/world. We must take action now to prevent disaster. US/Russia/Ukraine/NATO/UN/EU must implement a ceasefire now around these labs until they’re secured & pathogens destroyed
      Mar 13, 2022
Then on march 15, 2022 she clarifies as "Well Ackchually"
(1/4) I'm not convinced there are biological weapons labs or biological weapons in Ukraine-that's not what I'm concerned about. I'm concerned about the existence of the 25+ biological labs in that warzone. As i said 2 days ago:
(2/4) “Biolabs”, “bioweapons labs”, and “bioweapons” are 3 very different things. But because these phrases are so similar, there is sometimes miscommunication and misunderstanding when discussing them. I recently experienced this myself. So let me clarify...
(3/4) “Biolabs” are facilities which contain and experiment with dangerous pathogens, ostensibly for the purpose of serving the public good (i.e. vaccines, etc.). “Biological weapons labs” are facilities which exist for the purpose of turning pathogens into weapons...
(4/4) ...so they can be used against an enemy (i.e. “bioweapons”).
The danger of pathogens being released from biolabs in Ukraine is very real, and we need to take action immediately to prevent an impending catastrophe.

Obama's pivot to China and Southeast Asia, in my opinion, is a far better move. Instead of focusing on Europe and Russia. Especially given the fact that Europe is home to 4 of the top 10 largest economies. It was safe to say Obama and his administration believed the EU had it, but as we have seen in 2014, they didn't and they sat on their hands.

      - Many Elites in the US are strongly religious, thus have sympathy for the Israelis.
      - Many wealthy Americans are Zionists.
      - Many of these people have heavy economic interest in the area. (trade, oil, military contracts, real estate, technology)
      - These wealthy Elites lobby to have Congressmen elected to represent their interests, and the ones who are against it, usually get a smear campaign.

      For primarily two reasons.
      Strategy & values.
      Strategy
They are the USA's easiest ally regarding their policies.
The only interest geopolitically they have is their own safety. This makes them an easy place for the USA to have a friend in the middle east.
Many other countries have complicated interests depending on the day. Like all the fun stuff in Europe.
For Israel it's about survival, everything else foreign policy that most other countries do, doesn't exist for them.
The USA now has unofficial NATO bases their etc. While Israel gets protected, and never undermines the USA's foreign policy.
      Values.
Israel is the only democratic country in the area.
And they fought hard for it. Europe has many, while they are the only one in the middle east.
The average Americans have great sympathy for a people struggling for life & freedom.
Especially among those old enough to remember the difficult times for them to keep their country alive.
      Like 2014, 2008, and 2000-2005
Their efforts made in the late 90's to try to make peace.
      The struggles of 87 to 93, 82, 73, 67, 56, & 48.
The USA has a lot of sympathy toward a country struggling for their lives in a free country.

Something important to know, for all who are interested in history and/or support Ukraine:
Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia,” which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which for almost all of its existence, was at war with the Rus'.
Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise.
The name “Russia” was adopted only in the 18th century, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name to the “All-Russian Empire.” (Russia originates from Rosia, the name used by the Greek Orthodox clergy to refer to Rus'.)
Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren’t, include Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan. In historical texts of the 11th-12th centuries, these regions are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from that of the main Rus'.
In 1493, Muscovite Duke Ivan III appointed himself the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged this. From that point on, Muscovy began making false claims on Rus' ownership.
“Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way around, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. It is a Slavicized Finnic, and later Mongolized, offshoot. Kyiv was a developed, cultured capital when Moscow was just a small settlement.
Moreover, Italian sources from the 15th century also mention that: Russia is bordered by Poland to the west, Lithuania and Livonia to the north, and Muscovy to the east-further proving that Russia, historically speaking, is an exonym for Ukraine, which was later consciously appropriated by Muscovy to legitimise its power.
Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire; that didn’t mean they became the Romans or suddenly had the right to claim all of Italy and its history. Yet that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regard to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!
