I have just come back to this video for the second time and without doubt it is the best and most comprehensive review of this great bike. I've said it before but fuel range is easily fixed by the Rade Garage hidden tank i the front which will easily do 230-280 miles and the same tank coupling will then take the Rallye Raid side tank for up to 350 miles. Thanks for the review: I have this bike and I tested it on a Morocco tour, and all your impressions are the same as mine. I had a problem with the TC button, I could not turn it off in the sand and it was a big problem for me in the desert sand. The doongle that I put was not compatible with this bike and I had to remove it. Some extras I fitted: LED head light, WINGS titanium exhaust system, aluminum anti-slip plate, Tubliss rim system, windshield, closed hand guards, bigger pegs , strong rear brake pedal, wing mirrors flexible, oiled foam air filter, luggage rack and a few more details ..
Novorider hi, what rear break pedal did you get? I bend mine in a slide crash... and I am looking for one and there isn’t that much out there (in Europe)
7500 miles on my smcr. I only bought it in January. Bullet proof engine. Not had a single problem with it. If you carry baggage on your bike then fitting an Xtrig Preload adjuster as adjusting the rear spring is an absolute ballache. Cheap mod, and getting the spring out only takes 15 mins.
Nice comprehensive review. I think, with all the updates they did to this bike, updating the headlight should have been on the list too, maybe even the instruments.
Good review and footage. Gents, this is the closest to unicorn bike you are going to get. Long service intervals, capability to add racks for RTW or serious trips, no over whelming functions electronics (on the fence about shift feature, one more thing to go wrong...but its nice when coming in and going out of technical), lighter than KLR, but heavier than EXC line.... This is the type of bike where you can take an unknown route and have a much better chance of following through or worse case light enough to pick the bike up and back track if it gets too nasty. Nobody finishes a decent technical trail and wishes they had a heavier bike. You ass might not be thanking you on the slab runs, but atleast you won't find yourself bring heavy bike drama to a ride in most cases. Just add few more gal/liters to that fuel capacity, heated grips (thank me later), windscreen for long hauls and some luggage carry.
Great review. I have been lusting after a 690 for a while. I am a 71 year old guy but think I may still have a little in me. I am interested in how you solve the seat issue though. At my age I tend to sit a little more than normal. Also good to hear you folks have the goodies for this bike. Thanks again for this video.

@@captainbob406 I'm only 61 but bought the brother SMC 690R and tend to ride it more than my Godzilla Superduke 1290. It's so light and such low stress fun. Seat Concepts can maybe make a seat. Best technical review of this bike to date especially suspension comparison to old model. Re the air filter comment, whatever you do, do NOT fit the KTM foam filter from hard parts, it lets even more dirt in than the paper one does, I had a big problem doing the TAT on one of these with the foam unit. The reason is that the base of it is constructed out of very hard material which does NOT squish down and make a seal which is a very fast way to wreck your engine.Just fit the Rottweiler system or even consider adding the Rade Garage 6.2 litre hidden front tank and their foam filter system. The new 690 is the best adventure bike KTM make in my opinion. Not that it is perfect, it is still too heavy for a real all rounder but it is a lot lighter than anything else and if your travel alone off road that matters.
I love your review! I’ve been deciding which one to take after someone hit me off the road a couple of years ago and totalled it. It was a 2003 KTM 640LC4 Enduro R. I’m now saving for this 2019 beauty, what a masterpiece ❤
thanks for taking the time to do this review. excellent information on the electronics this bike has. Who would of thought we’d see these kind of electronics on a dirt bike?
Best review I’ve seen you do. Very informative. I love how thoroughly you explain AND DEMONSTRATE (pig plus) the ride modes quick shifter and electronics. Everything else in the video is good as well. Keep up the good work. Will there be a video on upgrades and modifications done to this motorcycle soon? 😬 🙏
Very good review. I bought the 690 END in 2008, its first year on the market and even then it was a great bike. In the meantime, I switched to a 990 and currently a 1290 SAR. I must admit that the 690 has been the bike that I have enjoyed the most everywhere: easy to handle, easy to maintain and very fun to ride (without abs and traction control). That being said, I'm sorry to see the exact same mirrors that I had to replace many times because the stem gets cut off and the same tail hanging down and coming apart. Good for the improvements, but there were two missed ones.
Nice bike, but could still be so much better if it was cross bred with a 500 EXC. My beefs with my 17 690 seem to still apply. Love the motor and handling, but it needs: Wider ratio gearbox, better seat, bigger gas tank, real skid plate, bigger pegs, easier air filter access, better fuel cap, lower weight. And windscreen, center stand, and rack connections for ADV riding. Some of those things can be fixed, some can't. Nice review, I bet Rocky Mountain will do well accessorizing these but we really shouldn't have to do all that work on a 12k+ bike.
Hi Eric: Thanks for your no-nonsense analysis with your highly pragmatic signature. I wanted to buy a KTM690 and ended up with a Husky 701 LR. Life can be so easy!
I hope they never make it shorter only reason I buy this bike is the seat height is tall! Guys who are over 6 feet need a tall bike! Love it . Good review!
I just wish they'd give us room between the seat and pegs to fold up our legs! It's like you gotta be 6ft+ to touch the ground, but under 5'6" while riding.
Wow, what a beautifully filmed production, first class stuff. Nice comprehensive and thorough review and explanation of the TC and ABS, the best I have seen online too. Jeez that is some speed on that dirt road at casual RPM 😆 I used to ride a suspension and engine modded DR-Z 400 off road, so the weight of the 690 will be familiar and just fine. The power, on the other hand, will be about double. I do want a 690 to park between my 300 XC and my Super Tenere. I figure that will be a great stable.
Earlier LC4 engines ('08-12ish) had lots of problems with the exhaust rocker roller failing and causing top-end damage. So early models were not as reliable.
IF IT"S REVIEWED ON ROCKY MOUNTAIN ATV, ITS GOING TO BE THOROUGH. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME, BRILLIANT VIDEO, YOU ARE TRULY BLESSED WITH THE COUNTRYSIDE.
Two questions.. Others are saying you have to change the oil around 3000 miles not 6000. What's you thoughts on this? Second I'm about 6'2" and I plan on adding some nice size saddle bags. I'm wanting a bike I can pretty much be flat footed sitting on the seat. You think I'd have any issues with the bike height?
I also want to add this will be my first bike purchase. I'm not an experienced rider. I'm thinking either the 690 or the beta 500 rr s.. Your thoughts on which way I should go?
@@keithking6951 I sat on a 2018 690 and the 2019 500 with softer suspension and they feel/sit exactly the same (I'm on my toes and I'm 5'9 At 6'2" you should be sitting flat footed depending on your inseam.) Maybe that would change if I adjusted the suspension on the 500. 690 is noticeably heavier but I did not drive it. I would cut that monster exhaust off the 690. Styling is okay. Why haven't they updated the 690. It's an awesome bike but a bit outdated. I'm probably going for a 500. Goodluck.
Great review. I love this bike and I love my 701. The added electronic stuff is whatever, nature of the beast with new bikes I suppose. But I just hate hate hate that dust getting past the air filter is a well known problem and it's glossed over like 'it's just part of the bike.' Some experience it, some don't but I spent 1000 miles doing every thing I saw mentioned to try and fix the stock airbox before finally dropping the money on an aftermarket intake and it's the first thing I tell people to check/fix. Cross my fingers the 6200 mile service isn't a complete teardown.
I just watched a review of a CRF450 trip from London to Morroco and back which reminds us that litre+ adventure bikes are a waste of money. This new 690 strikes me as the ultimate continental tourer on every surface. Very expensive but the power and tech is superlative and your arms will thank you after each day's 200+ miles in the saddle a) because of the smooth absorbent suspension and b) you can pick it up easily when you fall over. With seat mods, definitely my choice for an all round daily workhorse and mega tourer. Needs very heavy duty security because it's a powerful magnet for thieves.
I just got back from a Seattle-Argentina trip and I didn't use the 1190's power the first year of the ride! It was nice when things opened up down South but I think the 690 is the way to go!
What an astoundingly comprehensive review. I never detected an ounce of bias. Just simply the facts and whatever subjective opinions needed to make the point. Excellent work. 👍
That was a great review! Thanks!! I've been doing so much research - your candid comments were spot on. Really well done. Yes - I have a spread sheet for my build. I'm coming off a 1190R pretty farkled up and just tired of the weight.
Twin air also has a foam oiled air filter that’s made for the stock air box now, I like it way better than the PowerParts UNI filter. Also UNI themselves have come up with a new filter design for the 690\701 that is a big improvement over the one still offered as PowerParts by KTM\husqvarna👍
2018 arrived in my garage today, I love it. I wanted a lighter but more powerful bike than my KLR……though she is still a keeper! Lucky to have a KTM 1190 Adventure too which is my perfect touring bike. Looking forward to hitting the local trails on my 690. Man, she is a quick little beastie!
I think the issue (own one) is the tank in the rear. I tried a Rade add on tank and removed the air box, but there was too much going on under there and I'd rather carry gas if I have to.
Great review, learnt a lot about my bike from watching this, I put the Rally pegs on my 2019 ktm 690 and it makes a big difference, from a consumption point of view I get 4.5 liters per 100 kms, obviously I ride more conservatively, and I suspect 200 miles on a tank, you can get close.
After watching this review I sold my mint 2017 KTM 1090r in 24 hrs and got a new 2019 KTM 690 enduro. Much lighter but still a great dual sport/adv bike.
@@ChrisSmoove77 the 690 is great on the street as well as dirt. I did get an after market seat from seat concepts and a small windshield. if you are traveling really long distances the 1090 will still be more comfortable.
Hi Guys, loved this review, very helpful as I'm about to buy a 2019 model. You mentioned the bike was going to be a project build, I couldnt find any follow review, did you do one if so where can I find it? Tx Jason
Change the oil at 3,000 miles, not 6+k. I’ve owned two 690, and have done various lab reports. The recommended Motorex is absolutely toast at 3k. Wonderful review though!
mld I have zero experience with the 1090. But, the 690 will start getting really fussy in regards to shifting around the 2,500-3k mark. Basically screaming at you to change the oil! Very reliable motors if you keep an eye on the rockers, and keep the oil intervals lower than factory recommended. I didn’t have good luck with the 390 though.......
mld I work on the majority of my stuff, but based the oil changes from shifting and lab reports. Indeed, the dual oil filters and two screens add a minor layer of annoyance.
My question is why Motorex in the 690's and Belray EXS in the Huskys but doesn't really matter I guess just contract dollars as they (KTM/Husky) don't product there own lubricant lines. Yeah unless you can't change the oil at 3500, no lab reports needed but still pretty oil school oil mentality.
Aspired329 It’s simply just marketing. Both oil companies pay to be the “factory pour” I will probably just switch to 20w-50 vtwin mobil 1 in the warm months. I’ve had various oil samples taken from my 690s. 3,000 seems to be the point where motorex is trashed. Within a few hundred miles it’s down to a 40 weight, which is pretty wild.
I can't seem to find any reviews where the bike is tested on rougher trails than what I take my $5k KLR on. I won't ever sell the KLR as it serves a purpose just as my 2-stroke but after selling my XR650R that was street legal I've been looking at the 690R. Now after all these videos I'm leaning towards the KTM 500 EXC-F. Any advice from someone that has ridden both?
I picked one up today, 2020 with 387 miles on it. A very refined machine, good power also but the seat feels like I'm on a 2x6, I'm looking for aftermarket seats tonight.
So the key goes where you would put a tank bag and the gas cap goes where you would put a luggage rack...seems like it’s not meant to be an adventure bike to me...how did they overlook those details?!
I was looking for that too. I don't see one in the play list for the newer 690 but they do have one for the previous? generation from 2015 of which some would apply here too (like a better seat). th-cam.com/video/MyTm--KWHLA/w-d-xo.html
Would love to here about single track. I’ve been in between the 500 and 690. I’m a Colorado guy and ride 2-300 miles road and single track in a day. I know the lighter weight and more maintenance on the 500 but so muck lighter.
very good review! been looking for one like this for a while, just been debating a ktm or husky, thinking of geting one when i get out of college and road tripping it with friends or daily it like i do my old xl250r, probably both.
Wow! Really enjoyed this video! Great nature, great riding, great picture, great review! Btw: In which area are you riding? (we dont have something wild like this here in Europe)
It's basically Utah Valley area. That exact place is our regular spot. It's nice cause usually not too many people or rocks haha cool to see RM tear up the same trails i do on my motocross bike but on an adventure bike.
Nice video, I enjoyed it. The one thing that’s sticking out like a sore thumb is, the instrument cluster. 2 steps back on that one, I couldn’t tell if there as even a gear indicator.
I’ve got the 19 701 and I’m in love with it. I’m also local to you guys so if you want a 701 to do a build on next to the ktm your welcome to borrow mine any time you like!
I would like to see a review of the Husqvarna 701 and KTM 690 while riding the 5 Miles of Hell trail. This would give a great perspective of big-bore bikes on a challenging trail. All current videos are of the 300TPI or less.
Have ridden 5MOH, it was challenging on my 300 XC. No way I am taking my 701 on it any more than I would ride my 300 on the Interstate. The 690/701 are amazing bikes, but unless one happens to be Toni Bou or Graham Jarvis on a borrowed corporate owned bike, stay off 5MOH on your 690😆
PMitchell106 I heard that modern KTMs are pretty sturdy especially the 690. Unlike back in the 00s or 90s when taking a ktm for travel is basically flipping coins.
@@davidtang4462 Even the recent years are still a coin toss when it comes to their fuel pumps, which have left enough people stranded to make a description like "bulletproof" inappropriate.
Great review and awesome bike. I wish manufacturers would put proper gear on from new, eg bash plate, pegs and handguards as a minimum as these are usually the first things to be replaced.
Are y'all gonna post any build videos for this bike?? This review helped me decide to purchase my 2020 690 nd I've been patiently waiting to see how y'all built it!
I have had a handful of 690s over the years and more than anything I'm envious of your skills with this one. I can't bring myself to go as fast on that kind of terrain as you are lol, especially with the Safari tank etc etc. Are you finding the new suspension makes that possible or about the same on your older one?
What is the security like on it? No one ever seems to mention these boring but very necessary details in bike reviews. Steering lock? Key locking / disabling electronics? (Perhaps similar to the Honda HISS) Alarm? Datatag? Any other security features?
I keep looking at adventure bikes from the CB500X to the KTM 790/890. But this look a lot more manageable for city and sandy roads like in Las Vegas. I noticed there is a super moto version. Which would you think would be better for Las Vegas for city and sandy desert trails and roads? Or, not the right motorcycle at all?
Definitely a great adventure bike, one of the best (if not the best) but doesn't offer as much fun off road as way lighter KTM690 (or Husky 701). New KTMs with upgraded engine (2018+) are also somewhere else.

Really great job on the review, thorough, real world use... Very good - thank you! .. now I want a 690.
Good review, really good, looking forward to your adventure machine build on this bike, thanks.
I've been waiting for a review this in depth on this bike. keep them coming.
The best review I've seen of the 690 Enduro R. Thank you!
Our pleasure!
Great review. The 690 is perfect for out West ADV riding. Looking forward to the build, keep those vids coming.
Hi Eric: Thanks for your no-nonsense analysis with your highly pragmatic signature.
I wanted to buy a KTM690 and ended up with a Husky 701 LR. Life can be so easy!
We're glad you liked it! - Eric
I hope they never make it shorter only reason I buy this bike is the seat height is tall! Guys who are over 6 feet need a tall bike! Love it . Good review!
The simple solution would be to make one for both of us, could not be too hard to do..
I just wish they'd give us room between the seat and pegs to fold up our legs! It's like you gotta be 6ft+ to touch the ground, but under 5'6" while riding.
@@josheatsbananas4373 you're saying you're not go go gadget. I agree
@@beachsoap being go go gadget is definitely the solution 😂
Wow, what a beautifully filmed production, first class stuff. Nice comprehensive and thorough review and explanation of the TC and ABS, the best I have seen online too. Jeez that is some speed on that dirt road at casual RPM 😆
I used to ride a suspension and engine modded DR-Z 400 off road, so the weight of the 690 will be familiar and just fine.
Thank you for checking out our videos!
Update?
Wow, what a great review. And terrific video. If I buy a bike again this is it!
What an astoundingly comprehensive review. I never detected an ounce of bias. Just simply the facts and whatever subjective opinions needed to make the point. Excellent work. 👍
What’s the difference in the 2019 690, and the 2020 701? Trying to decide on the 2 bikes. Thanks!
Awesome in-depth review. Really enjoyed the on road and off road comparison.
That was a great review! Thanks!! I've been doing so much research - your candid comments were spot on. Really well done. Yes - I have a spread sheet for my build. I'm coming off a 1190R pretty farkled up and just tired of the weight.
15:48 I thought traction control off was when the light is on?
Richard Bautsch Yep, agree. Great review but he has the traction control backwards. Traction control is on when the light is on.
Well, I’ve owned mine for about a month. Riding where I wouldn’t have tried on an adv bike. Love it.
I think the issue (own one) is the tank in the rear. I tried a Rade add on tank and removed the air box, but there was too much going on under there and I'd rather carry gas if I have to.
Did you ever do a follow up video with all the additions you were planning. I cannot find it listed
Great review from somebody who knows the 690 inside out and is a great rider.
Best review on the “tube”😉👍🏻
Check out my reviews
After watching this review I sold my mint 2017 KTM 1090r in 24 hrs and got a new 2019 KTM 690 enduro. Much lighter but still a great dual sport/adv bike.
Can it carry a passenger?
Eric Larson it came with passenger pegs - that I removed. It’s capable of hauling a passenger. Just get a stiff enough rear spring.
How do you like the 690 in comparison? Wondering about highway/street riding mainly
I think the company does this because they know it will make them last less
I can't seem to find any reviews where the bike is tested on rougher trails than what I take my $5k KLR on. I won't ever sell the KLR as it serves a purpose just as my 2-stroke but after selling my XR650R that was street legal I've been looking at the 690R. Now after all these videos I'm leaning towards the KTM 500 EXC-F. Any advice from someone that has ridden both?
Rade Garage for an aftermarket tank and intake kit. Adds 5 litres (just over a gallon)
Outstanding review. This video is very thorough and helped me to make the decision to buy one. Picking it up this weekend.
I picked one up today, 2020 with 387 miles on it. A very refined machine, good power also but the seat feels like I'm on a 2x6, I'm looking for aftermarket seats tonight.
Awsome review. Really like this bike wish I could afford right now. Very high tech 👍👍
Very informative and I enjoyed your presentation style.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Wow, that's a great review! Looking forward to the build videos.
ABS dongle is a nice to have, do the TC settings persist when you turn the bike off/on?
I just got this bike sooooooo happpy. Love the quick shifter is super cool looking forward to getting some more bling especialy the exhaust
So the key goes where you would put a tank bag and the gas cap goes where you would put a luggage rack...seems like it’s not meant to be an adventure bike to me...how did they overlook those details?!
Great review! Cool bike. Surprised about the previous models with false neutrals. That's a bummer if you got that problem.
That's why people buy a Honda. Japanese engineering is always the most reliable.
Have the 1290 and need a winter machine, going for the 2016 690
is the egine reriable, what about the costs of services?
I am about to buy one used ...what to care about?
Great review! I have ben looking at the 690 for some BDR action. Your review has me wanting to go buy a '19 vs. a slighly older model.
Excellent review! I’m going for it. Thanks captain!
In the video you mentioned this is the owner's bike and you will do a build on it. Have you done a second video with the build yet?
I was looking for that too.
I don't see one in the play list for the newer 690 but they do have one for the previous? generation from 2015 of which some would apply here too (like a better seat).

It's nice cause usually not too many people or rocks haha cool to see RM tear up the same trails i do on my motocross bike but on an adventure bike.
you have some desert in spain
@@user-uw3fi2zg4t in Andalusia?
@@pepperthepep you have some in andalucia (almeria) but the biggest one is in aragon and navarre, i mean, still small but enough for a full day.
@@user-uw3fi2zg4t thanks. ill be in Malaga over the winter again and I will check out those places :)
Anytime I hear of an increase in horsepower I would like to know at what RPM The new rating is and at what RPM the old.
Could anyone be so kind and tell me the difference from 2019 to the 2022 bikes?
Nice video, I enjoyed it. The one thing that’s sticking out like a sore thumb is, the instrument cluster. 2 steps back on that one, I couldn’t tell if there as even a gear indicator.
Just traded in my Africa twin for one of these, can’t wait to get it! Especially after that review
How did you get on compared to the AT? I currently have a 2017 Africa twin DCT and a yamaha tenere 700, thinking of getting a 690 enduro r. Cheers
I’ve got the 19 701 and I’m in love with it. I’m also local to you guys so if you want a 701 to do a build on next to the ktm your welcome to borrow mine any time you like!
Musta missed where he said they have a 701.
The 690/701 are amazing bikes, but unless one happens to be Toni Bou or Graham Jarvis on a borrowed corporate owned bike, stay off 5MOH on your 690😆
9:31 "Bulletproof?" Are you sure you're talking about the KTM 690 Enduro? 🤔
Had a 2015 690 Enduro R for several years, never gave me any problems. That thing was rock solid, even though I beat the shit out of it.
Please put together an LR upgrade fuel option using the 701 LR parts and use a Seat Concept seat.
Does anyone knows if the 2019 and up model can be set manually to temporarily to run on low octane fuel when high octane fuel is not available ?
Is that mph or kmh ur talking about?
Very comprehensive review. I'm looking forward to your ADV build.
We appreciate it.
Thanks for watching!
Great review and awesome bike. I wish manufacturers would put proper gear on from new, eg bash plate, pegs and handguards as a minimum as these are usually the first things to be replaced.
Huge UNDERSTATEMENT!! PUT IT ON AND CHARGE FOR IT!!
Hi, Do you need to stop for change mode... 1 and 2 and the abs and Trac control , or you can change during you ride .
Thank you for this review 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
Are y'all gonna post any build videos for this bike?? This review helped me decide to purchase my 2020 690 nd I've been patiently waiting to see how y'all built it!
I have had a handful of 690s over the years and more than anything I'm envious of your skills with this one. I can't bring myself to go as fast on that kind of terrain as you are lol, especially with the Safari tank etc etc. Are you finding the new suspension makes that possible or about the same on your older one?
Great review. I'm gonna get one. When is RMATVMC going to do an adventure build on the 2019?
Nice review in American English, great to hear ,appreciate it .thats what we want to hear personal experiences and opinions '
What is the security like on it? No one ever seems to mention these boring but very necessary details in bike reviews.
Steering lock?
Key locking / disabling electronics? (Perhaps similar to the Honda HISS)
Alarm?
Datatag?
Any other security features?
Best bike ever..I changed my 790 R ..Back to 690 R....
What made you change it, the most
Nice review, I don't go for bigger heavier bikes but you kinda sold me on trying this one.
I would personally go for the Yamaha T7. Reliability is king.
Definitely a great adventure bike, one of the best (if not the best) but doesn't offer as much fun off road as way lighter KTM690 (or Husky 701). New KTMs with upgraded engine (2018+) are also somewhere else.
