Great job! I truly learned a lot about leather working from this video. Just ordered the 5.5 inch version of this knife and you gave me some good ideas. Thank you!
Wow that's genius how you did that with mostly one piece. I've been wanting to make myself a sheath, but couldn't figure out how to do so until I watched you. Thank you.
As commenter Stever Bretell stated below......the USMC KaBar fighting knife sheath perfectly fits the Old Hickory seven inch butcher knife......even after I modified one or two of mine just as Marsh Rat did........I got them from Amazon or Ebay for $7 each....look up Kabar replacement sheath.................Good vid, Mr. Marshrat..........I subbed...........
Simple and straight forward; just what I was looking for. I have a very old Case 7" (looks just like the Old Hickory) butcher's knife and will definitely make a sheath for it following your instructions. Great job, thanks!
At the end of the video, you said you would use saddle soap to make the sheath weatherproof. I have found that dipping leather into hot paraffin wax works well, gives the leather that nice walnut brown color, and doesn't need alot of maintenance to keep the weather proofing viable. The only drawback is that the wax must be melted in a double boiler. I used two cake pans I found at a thrift store for that task.
gracias por este vídeo. es el primer vídeo que no tiene mayor complicación para hacer mi funda. explicas excelente y la verdad es que no habla mucho ingles.
This is a great Vid.It's the first of yours l've seen, So I subscribed. I got as far as the template and duck tape. I found that the sheath for the U.S, Marine fighting knife fits perfectly. I know this Is more about process than product.
You're sure you're from Ohio? Haha, sound like you're from mid South! That's a compliment. Real nice videos you're doing. I suggest just a little more info on some things like the rivet & snap in particular. What sizes, brand? Go ahead & include shots of you adding them. My first sheath is for a Marbles Camp Axe & I am flying blind, except for viewing Wranglerstar's how to's. Using an old leather belt, put Chicago screws 1/4 " in. Stuck at the snap for retention. Got 2 different snaps, both appear to be 1/4", but only have a vague idea of how they go together. Afraid to ruin them trying ($$ is tite right now) so it's side lined. If you know the type & specifics on what leather you're using, that would help, along with what type glue. Just suggestions. You're doing fine, I appreciate it. Keep them coming!
You can also check out Weaver leather craft. Chuck makes some truly impressive things on that channel. Explains the tools, leather weights, and hardware, dyes, etc. He makes a cover for an Estwing axe if I remember correctly.
That's a good looking sheath. I would rather have that Old Hickory like yours than any of the overpriced knives the survivalists sell. I am around the water a lot, so I often stitch with stainless steel wire. Sometimes, I use inner tube rubber instead of leather. It is not as good looking as your leather sheath, but it drains and dries really fast. It is also free, if you watch the sides of the road.
Yeah, I usually have to make 2 or 3 goes at it until I get it just the way I want it. The rubber prototypes cost a lot less than experimenting with leather. The final…all depends.
I put a pair of custom deer antler scales on one for my nephew about 3 years ago. The original rivets popped right off and the hardest part was cutting the antler perfectly straight...turned out nice in the end.
i have enjoyed it. i originally 1st watched your OH knife to a bushcraft knife over a year ago. i re-watched it tonight. then i watched this sheath video tonight too. i never got around to this project, but i'm just about to do it! i have the knife over in a drawer (same knife) and i'll use it and also i love your chosen knife blade pattern! i'm gonna do it just like yours! it's nice - real nice and the sheath is nice too! your whole project came out so nice! i thumbed up your videos and i appreciate you very much! thank you!
Thanks, yeah- I would probably have to hammer punch the holes in the saddle leather, and that seemed like it would have to be pretty precise if you punched those in a separate operation from the soft leather. But I think I will give it a try!
If you can get a drill press and a fine bit, job becomes a cinch... just use wood work glue to hold seam pieces together the night before.. hot glue is too fat. ;)
***** Have play with some scrap bits glued together first.. watch out for the over confidence and rush that takes over lol... take your time and you will be happy with result.. oh yeah and keep holes well back from edges and not so close together that the leather has little structure between the holes.. it will split when under load like perforated paper otherwise. Measure and check twice, cut and drill once ...Good luck
and another thing.. if i were around there you and i would go knock-off some rabbits and squirrels, put'em on stick over a fire and have us some vittles. i'm too far though... texas. we have a nice base camp on our land and i'm considering building a teepee this year... not kidding... a real one, but use tarps and dig an underground air tunnel to supply air to the ground fire! in winter go out and cook on a campfire in the teepee with no wind and stay warm too! i'm waiting for 1st freeze of the year and then i'm getting some rabbits!!!! anyway, thank you again!
MR: i bought some used huge heavy leather book satuals at the 2nd hand store for $1 each just to make the sheath from. i had that in-mind when i bought them. they were cheap and thick. they were $1 each! they'll make good sheaths when i cut them. they're big! now i'm looking for a leather hole puncher like yours. bet i can find one at the flea market cheap? i'll keep looking! i got a big heavy sail needle and i'm considering using thick tarred bank line for the stitching! i think if anybody doesn't like your channel they would have to be either queer or a communist! so, in that case the hell with anybody who don't. everybody around here loves your channel!!!!! thanks MR., martina
How come no one tries to put a design in the leather before stitching. I'm going to stamp out a picture in my leather draw it out on the leather dull tool to make line's on the leather something diffrent.
You may be in Ohio but you're not from Ohio. Where are you from? You sound like a Tennessee boy to me. But you never know. I'm from Knoxville originally.

Thanks for your sub and for your tip on the KaBar sheath

This gave me some cool ideas. Peace brother may God be with you.
Neat sheath, I'm gonna have to get one of those Old Hickory knives and play with it.
fatmantolly I think you'll enjoy the Old Hickory. Seems to have some really good steel in it.
Looks good my friend, I have been looking for an instruction for thee Old Hickory's, you nailed it right on, Thanks.
+Ray RayRay Thank you for the good words.
Very nice , a good tutorial. The sheath turned out very nice.
Stanley Sprow Thank you very much. It was a relatively easy and quick project.
very very very nice easy sheath I loved it

I get my rivets from Hobby Lobby
Good job buddy! Cheers, Marc
Scouting Free Thanks for watching Marc. Cheers from Ohio
nice sheath!well done!
It's called the welt. You can use a regular kitchen fork to mark the stitching holes. Then drill them out.
Thanks for the tip!
good work ! this video encourages me to try it !
gracias por este vídeo. es el primer vídeo que no tiene mayor complicación para hacer mi funda. explicas excelente y la verdad es que no habla mucho ingles.

im looking to make a couple sheathes, what mm leather you use, I don't believe I heard it if it was mentioned I apologize
The leather he’s using looks pretty thin, I’d say 1.25-1.75mm (3-5oz, that saddle leather welt is probably 9-10oz).
Great job
I like the knife and now the sheath
airkraft1 Thanks Airkraft1. Just having some fun in the workshop over some very wet and cold days here in Ohio.
Marsh Rat. You picked that knife up on line ? that pattern on the blade is pretty interesting
airkraft1 The butcher knife is available from Amazon.com. Search for Old Hickory butcher knife. I did mod the blade to suit my tastes.
Job well done !
***** Thanks you Sir
Looks good..!
Nice sheath
Nicely done
Dean O Thanks for stopping by. Glad you found this vid interesting or entertaining.
Have you ever replaced the handles on a old hickory?
I put a pair of custom deer antler scales on one for my nephew about 3 years ago. The original rivets popped right off and the hardest part was cutting the antler perfectly straight...turned out nice in the end.
What kind of leather and OZ did you use? thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching. I really don't know much about leather but I do know it was cow and I ordered it from TandyLeather.com.
Ah ok thank you sir. Check out Springfield leather too, they got some nice stuff.
great job.
Thank you! Cheers!

what size artificial sinew ?
goood Jobb :-)
Excellent.
nephkiller Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for stopping by
Was that tool sufficient to punch holes through the saddle leather too? Or did you do it separately?
The leather punch did OK on the saddle leather but was somewhat difficult.
Thanks, yeah- I would probably have to hammer punch the holes in the saddle leather, and that seemed like it would have to be pretty precise if you punched those in a separate operation from the soft leather. But I think I will give it a try!

And I DO have a drill press. Thanks!

Hope you have good luck on your teepee. I tried building one a few years ago and it didn't turn out too good. I think I got into too big of a hurry.

Thanks Marsh Rat. Now I have no reason to put off modding my OKC.
Glad you watched. Hope you post a vid or some pics of your final project. Cheers
Greetings from a fellow mid-west "rat". Where did you get your leather? I'd like to try this for one of my knives. Thanks!
Tim M Get mine from Tandy
Marsh Rat Thanks, I'll look them up.
