    I like these bags, but I would definitely change the dimensions for my use to accommodate a trip to the library. Also, for the tassels, if I were using fabric, I would probably choose a scrap of coordinating batik or a solid color so that both sides of the fringe pieces appeared to be the same. While I like the tassels, I don't like the reverse of the fabric showing, particularly when a darker fabric is used. This is a good and simple design with many options for customizing. Thanks!

      How are you doing today?

      That’s a really good idea. 💡
      And that inspired me to think that if we don’t have any batik, why not fuse two squares together with heat & bond before cutting? That would also keep the fabric from fraying and might even be washable. That is, if the hardware can be. 🌷

    This is one of the first few videos I remember watching, way back in the “Olden days” of MSQC. The charm pack tote bag, the charm pack skirt, and something like the five guy’s magic quilt block? Or something like that! And the purse made out of Dresden wedges! I remember Jenny was having a stress attack bc her guest tutor was kinda slow-pokey, lol. 😂 I’m slow-pokey too, so I can relate! Those were favorites of mine and that’s when I first discovered MSQC. I had been quilting for several decades, by then. I remember going into the fabric store shortly after that, and saw another lady collecting fabrics for a quilt. And I said to her, “Do you know that there are quilting videos on TH-cam?!“😮! And she said, “Of course! How do you think I learned how to quilt?!“ 😂 I was new to TH-cam as well, because I had just gotten high-speed Internet! Before that, I was on dial up and it was so slow! I couldn’t do anything online!
    Those good old days weren’t that long ago! 😆 😝

    • @AnitaSouthall
      @AnitaSouthall 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I can relate, I used to think you had to learn how to quilt from a book so I put it off for decades. Now I'm a TH-cam junkie!

    This is so much the way my daughter and I sew together. I get so tickled that she “ helps” me with tips like “the metals gets hot -let it cool”. I’ve been sewing professionally for 60 years! We both love your tutorials. By the way, I leave a piece of the lining side seam unsewn to turn the bag right side out, then I can sew all the way around the top neatly.

    I am a huge fan of glue. Have a glue stick by every machine I own. After sewing binding to a quilt, I flip to the front, press into place and then glue down. I use Elmers washable school glue, so I do let it dry overnight then just literally zip around the next day. Mitered corners are perfect.

    • @deborahwerner2525
      @deborahwerner2525 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can iron that glued edge which dries the glue, and you're ready to finish. I'm too impatient to wait till the next day!! Glad you shared the glue tip, it sure makes sewing the binding down quite effortless!

    • @marlahanks7278
      @marlahanks7278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I learned about the Elmer's glue tip when I made a "Grab-n-Go" tote in a sew along with Gudrun Erla (GE Designs) in '20. The bottoms of the bags are made using vinyl coated fabric and you can't iron that fabric. I, too, as Deborah Werner suggested, iron my binding down right then. I actually cut my backing fabric 1" larger than the quilt, turn it to the front, fold down twice for my binding. I know some of the quilt police cringe over that technique, but it works fine for me! 😊

    When I make bags I always cut a 2" square from the bottom corners before sewing the seams and the line up the side seams and then sew across the boxed corners, I find this quicker and more accurate. Been making a lot of bags lately, love the cork idea my next challenge. Thankyou, Nat you are looking so great. Blessings from down under.

      Seams everyone is agreeing about Natalie today

    • @jhwilliams6550
      @jhwilliams6550 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helen, how do you figure the cut out when it’s all one piece like this bag? I’ve seen so many different ways and some are rectangular and not square. I have made several bags but usually with a front and back and I understand the bottom corner. I agreed that it is quicker and for me definitely more accurate! I just have never seen a formula for one piece.

    • @helenmorgan4003
      @helenmorgan4003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jhwilliams6550 I'm not sure if there is a formula, I just watch TH-cam and then experiment. I see my handles to lining when adding pockets . See lining and out side seams with out leaving an opening then place lining into out side, wrong sides together then alone the tops making sure the lining is a smidge shorter than our side making sure handles are out then carefully top stitch making sure lining doesn't show and then see another row of sticking 1/4 below all done no turning or sewing of turning hole so much easier and quicker. Enjoy your bag sewing. Going to give Jenny Doan's cork based bag a go next week when I go into town.

    Thank you both for this extra special video. You two work so well together - and thanks Natalie for pointing out the tips for us. Your mom gets so excited she skips the boring stuff!! I've found that to make the lining and bag top easier to prep for the final topstitching that if you iron or finger press the seam from the inside before pulling it right-side out makes all the difference.

    I've been making bags for quite a while but I find pleasure in any upgrades and tips to perfect the art 🎨 of making my end results better. I like weather resistant canvas, especially with handles. And bases of the bag too.

    Hardware is my next challenge.

    Loved the original totes and the upgraded ones are stunning as well. Also, I have to say, I love, love, love Natalies blouse.
