I loved this adaptation of the show because I grew up on Anne Rice as a teenager in New Orleans. I love the movies and the books and I feel like the show joins them well.
Considering Anne Rice published Feist of All Saints after IWTV which is a story about Creoles (Free Blacks) in New Orleans, the racial change made sense to me.
There’s so many clues in this show about what’s to come especially with Armand. I guess because I’m familiar with the original trilogy and Prince Lestat trilogy I can see why they’ve remixed the story for this medium.
Daniel and Armand’s dynamic is what I’m really interested in right now because if you know their history in the Vampire Chronicles than what the show is possibly setting up will be amazing and heartbreaking.
It’s important for people who don’t know the source material that the entire VC is basically Lestat and Louis’s love story as problematic as it is, they always end up back together.
Also Lestat name dropping Akasha and Enkil in the last episode made me so happy.

I smiled too when Lestat offhandedly mentioned, "Those Who Must Be Kept".

I gotta go back to that episode! It feels familiar, but I definitely think the fullness of the allusion was lost on me.

Spoiler free: I think this show is incredible. A friend of a friend of mine was in it as an extra and had offhandedly said, "It's going to be terrible, but I'm going to watch every episode," so my expectations for it were so low. Then I watched the pilot and was blown away. The casting is perfect, the costumes and sets are beautiful, and the story feels fresh. In interviews, everyone involved talks about how much they revere Anne Rice and are trying to honor her. AMC renewed it for a second season before the pilot even aired. I was a huge Anne Rice fan in high school, movies and books, but I never could have imagined a series as good as this one. I'd encourage anyone who's curious to check it out (with the caveat that yes, there are trigger warnings to consider).

Same here I had low expectations cos the trailer was kinda meh but the show is SO GOOD! I'm curious though what made your friend say that it was going to be terrible? Cos I think extras don't get to see the script

@@Kklleeoo I'm not sure, but yeah, she definitely hadn't seen the script as you said since she also had thought that there were going to be sex scenes between Louis, Lestat, and Claudia and was obviously wrong there (someone must have known the pilot threesome scene with Miss Lily and gotten confused). My guess is just that there's been so much suspect vampire media that she expected it to be CW level quality instead of prestige TV.

Oh wow! That's interesting that your mutual friend had low expectations going in. I only heard about the show through whispers and the occasional trailer drop but went into the show relatively "blind." I am so glad that you enjoyed the show as much as myself. I totally agree that the story is fresh. This is how you adapt something for a new audience without relying on nostalgia to do the heavy lifting. Thanks for commenting!

TV Louis' great grandfather was a free man of color who amassed the family fortune by founding a sugar plantation, which indeed used slave labor. It took two generations to squander that fortune, which left the du Lacs four months away from bankruptcy by the time Louis was saddled with being Executor in Charge/head of household/steward of the family trust. This was laid out in Episode 1.
In Louis' invitation letter to Daniel, Louis said it had been 49 years since their first interview (1973, when Anne Rice wrote the book).

This book/movie/tv series is a trip. When I read the book I understood all of their ages. Armond the oldest Claudia the youngest - and people flipping out cause Claudia wasn't 5 and Armond wasn't played by a 17 year old. Like seriously... And, now the new Louis not being a plantation owner with slaves to a "pimp" - both equally as loathing...

Yea I agree that Kirsten Dunst's performance had more subtlety while Bailey's was more stage play kind of acting, although the main problem I have is with her accent. I thought she was great in ep 7 though, at that point she didn't seem like she was acting anymore and had become Claudia. I think she's only gonna improve even more in season 2!

You brought to words what I failed to mention. I agree that Bailey's performance felt better applied to the stage. When her character aged up, I was able to enjoy her a lot more. I think that giving her this serial killer mindset rather than just the insatiable monster label the 1994 movie applied to her was a nice update. I particularly loved the episode where she lets in the police, forgetting that all her trophies were in her room. haha

Just watched a series that is a lot like this. I think it was called "all vampires are gay" or something like that.

omfg...Stuart Townsend wasn't playing an emo version. You do know that goths came before emos right? Also given the time frame of Queen of the Damned you know Emos didn't exist then right? Emos were always a fad...goth is a sub culture. Plz do not lump emos in with Goths. I even think in that movie that they made the firm statement that Jesse the co star was a London Goth. You make yourself sound like you don't know what you are talking about. Don't call Goths emos, it is insulting.

Creole not black. He is French and American or indigenous. should learn more about creoles and French Indians during that time.

There are two types of Creole. One meaning whites both in the America from French descent and Creole referring to mixed blacks of Louisiana.

@@Dotthel That's what I thought. When I read Chopin's "Awakening" in high school, I could've sworn that they used it for multiple meanings.
